The CMA Awards continues its run during November sweeps in 2003. The 37th
Annual CMA Awards will be held live November 5 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS from
Nashville. Returning for his twelfth turn at the host's podium will be Country
superstar Vince Gill.
"Moving the Awards to November sweeps has been good for the network, good for
the CBS affiliates and good for Country Music," said CMA Executive Director Ed
Benson. "The CMA Awards are a success on many levels - the widespread critical
acclaim for the depth and diversity of our performers; the ratings windfall for
the network; and consumer response at the retail level. 'Country Music's Biggest
Night' has found a high-impact placement in November."
CBS's
broadcast of "The 36th Annual CMA Awards," on November 6, 2002, led the network
to its first Wednesday win of the 2002-03 season in viewers and households
finishing in the Top 10 most-watched programs for the week according to Nielsen
ratings. The eligibility period for the 2003 CMA Awards is July 1, 2002 to June
30, 2003. The first ballot will be mailed to eligible CMA voting members May 29.
It is necessary to have 10 nominations to be included on the second ballot,
which is mailed to eligible members July 22. The final ballot will be mailed to
the membership September 23. The final nominees in the 12 categories for "The
37th Annual CMA Awards" will be announced at a press conference August 26 in
Nashville.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG
==========================================
A song that became part of Ray Price’s 1962 “Night Life” album and is also
included in Willie Nelson’s new “Crazy: The Demo Sessions” on
Sugar Hill
Records, began with an encounter with an over friendly drunk in a Nashville,
Tennessee bar.
Willie Nelson and steel guitar great Buddy Emmons were together in the bar
and the situation became a case of “inverted mistaken
identity.” The drunk
closed in on Willie and Buddy and began getting closer and closer.
Buddy thought Willie knew the overly friendly drunk fellow and Willie
thought Buddy knew him! Finally Buddy asked the drunk, “Are
you sure about where you want to be?” And the drunk replied “Yeah.” Emmons
repeated the question, “Are You Sure?”
Buddy says that Willie looked at him and said, “Hey, there’s a title for a
song. I’ll write it and give you half of it.” Emmons
told Nelson that wasn’t necessary and even tried to talk Willie out of splitting
the song with him but Willie insisted—saying, “an idea is as good as a song.”
According to Buddy, “That’s just the kind of person Willie Nelson is!”
Willie did write “Are You Sure” and did share the song with
Buddy Emmons. The song was recorded by Ray Price and is included in his 1962
“Night Life” album. It’s also a track in Willie Nelson’s “Crazy: The Demo
Sessions” album on Sugar Hill Records. The album contains some of the early
Willie Nelson works recorded for Pamper Music-which was owned by Ray Price and
Hal Smith. The recordings were found in 1994 on a large unmarked ¼ inch reel of
tape labeled “Pamper Demos” in the vault of
Sony/ATV/Tree in Nashville, Tennessee. The Pamper
Music song catalog was sold to Tree International in 1969 and
Sony Music bought Tree in 1989.
The original recordings were not intended for release to the public-but were
intended for use as “demo recordings,” to pitch new songs to
recording
artists and record producers.
Information for this article came from liner notes furnished by producer
Steve Fishell. “Crazy: The Demo Sessions” is on Sugar Hill
Records and will be available in stores February 11th.

Question:
I heard on the radio that Earl Scruggs has built a new banjo. Is that true?
Answer:
Although Earl didn’t build it, there is a new limited edition Gibson banjo
called “The Earl” and it is aimed at serious Earl Scruggs fans. The price is
$29,500 and includes round-trip airfare to Nashville, Tennessee, a personal
meeting with Earl Scruggs, your photo taken with Earl and he picks “Foggy
Mountain Breakdown” on the new banjo before handing it over to the new owner.
Purchasers of the new banjo also get to meet the instrument builders who
created it.
