Nyhetsbrev nr. 93     3 november 2003

Tills dess: Må vänliga vindar blåsa er i ryggen!

Göran Geson

CATCHING UP WITH ... ROY DRUSKY

Posted by Nick Krewen / COUNTRYWEEKLY.COM on October 30, 2003 at 20:06:26:

Country music history may have sung a different tune had Roy Drusky recorded the song he was offered in 1961. That's when legendary producer Owen Bradley suggested Roy try his mellow baritone on a tune called "I Fall to Pieces."

"I told Owen, 'I think it's a great song, but it's a girl's song.'" recalls Roy, now 73. "He replied, 'If you don't want it, I've got a girl that will do it.' He played it for Patsy Cline, she recorded it - and that's history."

The Atlanta native doesn't bemoan the loss - after all, he did enjoy 14 Top 10s from 1960 to 1970, including "Three Hearts in a Tangle," "Another" and "Second Hand Rose." He also wrote hits for others, including Faron Young's 13-week chart-topper "Alone With You," whose success inspired Roy to move to Nashville in 1958.

But that wasn't the career path he had imagined for himself. "I wanted to play baseball," admits Roy. But after an unsuccessful tryout with the Cleveland Indians, he joined the Navy in 1947 and fell in love with music.

"We had a little band on the USS Toledo, and that's where I got an interest in country music," he remembers. "After I'd watch the guitar player, I would go back to my bunk and try to play like him."

After the Navy, Roy briefly attended Atlanta's Emory University to become a veterinarian - but music, he says, "was tearing at me." Roy formed a band, got his own 15-minute radio show in Decatur, Ga., and eventually traveled to Houston and Minneapolis as a musician and DJ.

Once in Nashville, he quickly began stacking up hits - including his biggest, 1965's "Yes, Mr. Peters," a duet with Priscilla Mitchell recorded on the spur of the moment. "We had completed a session and had about 15 minutes left," Roy recalls. "We ran over the song once or twice, and then recorded it. That was it."

These days, Roy lives on a small farm in Portland, Tenn., with wife Bobbye and their dogs. He says most of his days are spent "enjoying my four grandkids." While he describes himself as semi-retired, Roy sings gospel occasionally and occasionally appears on the Grand Ole Opry, where he's celebrating his 45th year as a member.

And even as he looks back on a string of hits that stretched into the mid-'70s, Roy now regrets that he focused so much on his singing career. "If I had to do it over, I'd probably concentrate on songwriting," he admits. "The royalties are insurance for your old age."

"Happy Birthday Charlie Walker...!!!"

Posted by TWANGTOWNUSA.COM on November 02, 2003 at 05:51:45:

Country singer Charlie Walker had a sporadic career with one major highlight, his 1958 classic hit release of Harlan Howard's "Pick Me up on Your Way Down." Texas-born Walker began in the early '40s as a vocalist in the Cowboy Ramblers. After several years singing with the Bill Boyd-led group, Walker briefly retired from the performing side of the business to work as a DJ. A recording contract with Columbia brought him back to performing, though, and it was then that he scored with Howard's classic composition. Minor hits followed, including a trilogy of honky tonk-inspired tunes, "Close All the Honky Tonks," "Honky Tonk Season," and even a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women." After the hits dried up, Walker moved to the land of mediocre performers, Las Vegas, and sang there for several years before attempting an unsuccessful comeback with MCA in 1986.

Country Music Association Award Show sänds under 3 timmar på TV över hela USA. Janne Lindgren

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Question One:

special tribute to Texas country music. Do you know anything about that?
Answer:
New York City's famed Carnegie Hall recently went country as the New
York Pops Symphony opened its 2003-2004 season with a celebration of
Americana and country music.
The Gatlin Brothers were a part of that concert and during their
performance, they paid tribute to Texas country music icons Floyd Tillman,
Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb and Roy Orbison.

The World Would End." He recorded it from the radio in the late 50's or
early 60's but never knew the name of the singer. Do you know?
Answer:
"Guess We Thought The World Would End" was the flipside of Bobby Helm's

death has been reported, although officials speculated that carbon monoxide
may have been a factor. The Montgomery County sheriff's department said the
bodies were discovered by Adams' husband, Philip Adams. An emergency medical

REAL COUNTRY MUSIC

- AUSTIN, U.S.A

Paketshow 2004 - På svenska scener sommaren 2004 ….

ROGER WALLACE

Tidningen Country Music People skrev bl.a, I samband med första plattan “Hillbilly Heights”,  "the most impressive new voice to emerge from the Austin talent pool".

Roger Wallaces framför countrymusik, djupt rotad i Lonestar honky-tonk traditionen.

”Music that has been ”lost” on today´s commercial countryradio is found on this project. If you´re a lover of great, true to form traditional countrymusic. The “Lowdown” is a MUST HAVE!

skrev R.W Storm/twangcast.com i sin recension av Wallace´s senaste platta ”The Lowdown”

The Austin Chronicle's Jim Caligiuri proklamerade  "one of the best singers, not only in Austin, but in all of country music”

TERI JOYCE

GARY CLAXTON

Ingår i Teri Joyce Austinband The Tagalongs och flera andra konstellationer. Flitigt anlitad gitarrist.

Remembering Phil Baugh

Posted by TWANGTOWNUSA.COM on November 04, 2003 at 11:07:34:

Born 1936 in Olivehurst, CA   Died Nov 4, 1990

by Sandra Brennan
Phil Baugh was one of the best session guitarists in Nashville during the 1970s and '80s. Born and raised in Northern California, he began playing guitar and performing in churches as a child, which led to band and nightclub gigs. He got his first big break playing with Ray Price, who helped him get a recording contract with Longhorn Records in Dallas. In 1964 Baugh and Vern Stovall recorded the album Country Guitar, which contained two major hits, "Country Guitar" and "One Man Band." In 1965 he was named Best Guitarist by the ACM, Outstanding Instrumentalist of the Year by Billboard, and Instrumentalist of the Year by Cashbox. Baugh rejoined the Ray Price band as a lead guitarist in 1969. He moved to Dallas two years later and became a prominent studio musician for commercial jingles and album projects. Baugh moved to Nashville in 1975 and there became one of the hottest session players in town. His unique sound stemmed from his invention of the "Phil Baugh Pedal," comprised of six pedals that bent the strings of an electric guitar to produce sounds similar to that of a steel pedal guitar. Baugh formed the Superpickers in 1980, which included steel guitarist Buddy Emmons, drummer Buddy Harmon, bassist Henry Stryzlecki, pianist Willie Rainsford, and percussion/harmonica player Terry McMillian. During the early '80s, Baugh also embarked on a successful producing career. He suffered a coronary in 1985, but continued working on the Nashville Network's Church Street Station. However, he never fully regained his health and died in 1990 at age 53.

JL.

Nyhetsbrev nr. 96         9 november 2003

http://www.mic.no/nmi.nsf/home/ballade?opendocument&url=http://www.mic.no/nmi.nsf/doc/art2003090311443512462348

Mvh Thor

Ps: Jag vill också gärna veta hur många DJs som sänder sina bidrag varje vecka!

Skickar du in?

 All the best

MONICA SILVERSTRAND

JL

Cash Also Receives The Irving Waugh Award of Excellence

NASHVILLE - The night belonged to the Man in Black, Johnny Cash, and Alan Jackson during "The 37th Annual CMA Awards." Both men won three trophies each during the evening. Cash received trophies for Single and Music Video of the Year for "Hurt" and Album of the Year (with producer Rick Rubin) for American IV: The Man Comes Around, which Cash once called, "The best record we've done." Cash last won Album of the Year in 1968. Cash died Sept. 12 at the age of 71.

Jackson received Awards for Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year (which he won in 2002) and Vocal Event of the Year with Jimmy Buffett for their chart-topping hit "It's Five O' Clock Somewhere." His latest Awards bring Jackson's career total to 16.

Son John Carter Cash and daughter f 71.

Son John Carter Cash and daughter Kathy Cash accepted their father's Awards on his behalf. "My father's work came to completion at the end of his life not at the end of this record," John Carter Cash said. "I've never seen a man more dedicated and stronger than that man. My father's memory will live on in my heart, and I know in all of your hearts."

Cash was also named the fourth recipient of the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence. The award is given to an individual who is an originator and caretaker of demonstrated ideas and actions that have dramatically broadened and improved Country Music's influence on a national or international level for the benefit of the industry as a whole, and also has a proven historical impact on Country Music. The CMA Board of Directors selected Cash for this honor earlier this year.

Friends and admirers of Cash paid homage to the Country legend in a moving musical celebration to close the last musical performance of the Awards. Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson, who were part of The Highwaymen with Cash and Waylon Jennings, performed "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line," respectively. Travis Tritt and CMA nominee Sheryl Crow, who had performed at both June Carter and Johnny Cash's memorial services, joined musical forces for "Jackson." Hank Williams Jr., who joined forces with Cash in 1988 on a song called "That Old Wheel," performed one of Cash's most popular hits "Ring of Fire." All the performers joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who were nominated with Cash for Vocal Event of the Year, for "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

Reigning 2002 Female Vocalist of the Year Martina McBride picked up her second straight Award in that category. "I am so honored to be in this category with the women that are in this category," said McBride. "I don't know why it is me up here, but I am very grateful and proud." Close friend Faith Hill presented McBride with the Award after McBride performed her latest single, "In My Daughter's Eyes," from her eighth RCA Records album Martina.

Brooks & Dunn picked up their 11th Vocal Duo of the Year trophy. "We are working on our second decade," said Ronnie Dunn. "Thanks for keeping us around."

Since releasing their first Arista Nashville album more than a decade ago, Brooks & Dunn have sold more than 27 million albums and have garnered 21 No. 1 hits. The duo performed their new single "You Can't Take The Honky Tonk Out of the Girl."

The 2002 Horizon Award winner Rascal Flatts won Vocal Group of the Year, a first for the trio. In an emotional acceptance, the group gave their Award to "our heroes," retiring group Alabama. Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney have two Platinum albums to their credit and seven Top 10 hits, including "I Melt," which the group performed on the Awards.

Joe Nichols took home the coveted Horizon Award, which is given to the artist who has demonstrated significant growth in Country Music over the past year. Nichols' debut album, Man With A Memory, spawned two No. 1 hits including "Brokenheartsville," which he performed.

Songwriters Doug Johnson and Kim Williams won their first CMA Award for Song of the Year for "Three Wooden Crosses" by Randy Travis. "You know, our world needs hope," Johnson said backstage. "And if any of us can give anyone hope, well, we've done our job."

Country Music Hall of Fame member Dolly Parton teamed up with five-time GRAMMY award winner Norah Jones on "The Grass Is Blue," a Parton classic that Jones recorded for the tribute album Just Because I'm A Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton. The performance also included Rhonda Vincent on background vocals.

Entertainer of the Year nominees Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney each performed poignant coming-of-age songs. McGraw sang "Red Ragtop," the controversial single about regret and forgiveness from his nominated Album of the Year Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors. "There Goes My Life," Chesney's first single from his upcoming album, follows a father through the birth of his child, to giving her away at her wedding.

Top nominee Toby Keith performed his 18th No. 1 hit, "I Love This Bar," in front of a backdrop of neon signs and barroom images.

Female Vocalist of the Year nominees Terri Clark and Patty Loveless performed up-tempo songs "I Wanna Do It All" and "Lovin' All Night," respectively. In 2003, Clark was the only female to have a No. 1 hit in 82 weeks with "I Just Wanna Be Mad." Loveless' newest album On Your Way Home, her first studio project in more than two years debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and received critical acclaim.

Country Music's brightest new stars in the Horizon Award category each performed songs that in the past year established them as viable hit-makers. "Nashville Star" winner Buddy Jewell sang his Top 5 hit "Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey's Song)," a tribute to his daughter; Blake Shelton performed his family-oriented No. 1 song "The Baby;" Gary Allan sang "Songs About Rain," his second single off his fifth MCA Nashville album See If I Care; and Darryl Worley sang "I Will Stand My Ground," from his Platinum album Have You Forgotten?

George Strait, the CMA Award's top-nominated artist of all time with 71, performed his new single "Honk If You Honky Tonk." Highest-selling Country female in history, Shania Twain, sang "She's Not Just A Pretty Face." Female Vocalist of the Year nominee Alison Krauss collaborated with her band, Union Station and Musician of the Year nominee Jerry Douglas, on "Every Time You Say Goodbye."

Three-time CMA Award winner Brad Paisley offered the comic relief of the night with a little help from his friends. "The Bachelorette" star Trista Rehn and "Star Trek" captain William Shatner introduced Paisley, who performed "Celebrity," the tongue-in-cheek satire on stardom.

Guitarist Randy Scruggs received his second Musician of the Year trophy and dedicated his Award to some of his biggest influences. "I'd really like to say a personal thanks to the Cash family and the Carter family for the many years of inspiration," Scruggs said.

Capitol Nashville recording artist Dierks Bentley introduced a commercial break with his No. 1 single "What Was I Thinkin'" from his debut, self-titled album.

Adding some comedic moments himself, Vince Gill hosted the CMA Awards for the 12th consecutive year. Gill also took to the stage and performed "Young Man's Town," a reflective look at the differences in the past and the present from Gill's album Next Big Thing, with background vocals from his daughter Jenny.

Country legends Floyd Cramer and Carl Smith were officially inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Cramer, know for his progressive piano playing style, died in 1997. Singer-songwriter Smith, who attended the Awards, wrote some of the biggest hits in Country Music in the 1950s, including "Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way" and "Are You Teasing Me."

Presenters on "Country Music's Biggest Night(tm)" included Trace Adkins, Tracy Byrd, Chris Cagle, Anthony Clark and Mike O'Malley from CBS' "Yes Dear," Kellie Coffey, Sara Evans, Jennifer Hanson, Rebecca Lynn Howard, George Jones, Lonestar, Jo Dee Messina, LeAnn Rimes, Kid Rock, Marty Roe, Keith Urban, Mark Wills and Wynonna.

The industry professional members of the Country Music Association vote to determine CMA Award winners. The CMA Awards were produced by Walter C. Miller, directed by Paul Miller and scripted by David Wild. The event was broadcast live on the CBS Television Network from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. MJI Programming, a Division of Premiere Radio Networks, is the official radio packager of the CMA Awards, which includes the stereo-radio simulcast of the gala event. The Awards was also seen around the world, including BBC Television in the UK. The CMA Awards became the first music awards show to be broadcast on network television in 1968.

TERRI CLARK IN PLAYBOY?

Posted by COUNTRYWEEKLY.COM on November 08, 2003 at 09:20:58:

Could be! Terri was mighty easy on the eyes of Playboy.com's poll takers - so much so that she was the second highest vote-getter in a recent online poll to determine country's hottest female! Terri gained more votes than Faith Hill, Leann Rimes, and other country beauties. Now Playboy.com has offered Terri a nude photo shoot - and she's seriously considering it.

Hej Janne.

JL.

Question: Some days ago I found an old LP of David Rogers in a second hand shop. He
was famous in the 70th (1973-77), and with this LP I had three of him. But I´ve never heard anything about him since this time. Can you please tell me, what's about him today?
Answer:David Rogers placed 37 songs on the country charts between 1968 and 1984,
but only two of them cracked the top ten: "Need You" in 1972 and Loving You Has Changed My Life," in 1974. Both songs peaked at # 9.

I did promotion work for David for a couple of years back in the 70's. He
was one of country music's most unrecognized talents, a nice guy and a good
person.  David Rogers died in 1993 at the age of 57.

(Obs! LPs inte CDs). JL

Hej Janne,

Ang. diskussionen i ditt nyhetsmail ang.

Hi guys and gals,

I really appreciate all the email response I got from the last newsletter about the history of one of the great Sho-Bud guitars, the Super Pro II, but I was reminded that even though it's history for you, for me it's memory.

That's what started me thinking about this weeks newletter … my memories of the Grand Ole Opry.

Upon moving to Nashville in the sixties, one of my first road jobs was working with Stonewall Jackson, one of classic, traditional country singers and Opry members. I remember being home one Thursday afternoon and having Stonewall call me and say that we were working the Opry Saturday night and then leaving after the show and playing southern Georgia Sunday afternoon. I put very little thought into the significance of me actually playing the Opry because to me, at the time it was just another job to get paid for. I remember loading up my car, driving down to the Ryman and pulling in to park behind Sho-Bud, whose back door butted right up against the back door of the Opry. I grabbed my guitar … there were no pack-a-seats in those days … went up the seven steps to the backstage area, past Mr. Bell the security guard who really had nothing to do with security because in those days, it wasn't needed. This was mid-summer and of course, there was no air-conditioning in the Opry! because as I remember, backstage it was near a hundred degrees, not that I cared or noticed much due to all the excitement of being backstage at the Opry and knee deep in musicians and sharing the common experience of playing in this great and famous auditorium, the mother church of country music.

As I was setting up my steel guitar in one of the small cramped dressing rooms, it seems like everybody stuck their head in to say hello. Stringbean, Grandpa Jones, Dolly and Porter, Jim and Jesse, Faron Young, Roy Acuff, Marty Robbins, Sam McGee and the Fruitjar Drinkers, June Carter, Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, Jean Sheppard, Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper, Buddy Charlton, Big Jim Webb, Weldon Myrick, Hal Rugg, Sonny Burnette and of course, the great Shot Jackson. The pressure was starting to mount. Luckily I was very familiar with Stonewall's material having already worked with him for three weeks and being pretty easy material to start with. After tuning and getting ready, I heard the announcement that we were on next. Leaving the safety of the dressing room and pushing my way through the legends of country music backstage, I was suddenly exposed to the audience and the world through 50,000 watts of clear channel power from WSM radio. I had the intro on Don't Be Angry, Regg! ie Allie, our guitar player, had the first fills and when it came time for the turnaround, Hal, Weldon, Buddy, Shot and Sonny ran up behind me on the stage yelling "You can do it … you won't mess up much … and look boys, he's shaking." along with Shot hitting me on the head with his fist. I don't know why, even laughing out loud, I played the best instrumental break I had probably ever played in my life. I could hear this hoard of steel guitar players as the retreated backstage and Hal Rugg saying "Hey, he did pretty good." and Shot saying "Next time I'll cut his strings off".

I'll never forget the response of the crowd and my initiation to the Opry from the singing legends and the great steel guitars that I had appreciated growing up.

The camaraderie, respect and love that I feel for the Ryman and it's glorious past will always be a part of me. The significance of all this didn't hit me until I walked back down those seven steps into the evening air and put my guitar back in the car, drove away and turned the Opry on on my radio. Suddenly it hit me as I was listening to Marty Robbins that I was just there. That's when it all fell into place.

Some people say country music isn't the same as it was in those days and I won't take sides pro or con, however and this could be because of my age at the time but that magic Opry at the Ryman in the fifties and sixties … those cramped dressing rooms, the lack of air-conditioning, the great acoustics, the monitoring system on the stage which I loved, and all the sights, sounds, smells and memories … well, it just can't get any better than that. One of the things I remember most about the Opry of those days is how much fun it was and how much love everybody had. After growing up on a dairy farm 650 miles from the Opry and listening to it every Saturday night, to actually be there with the people I had idolized all my life … and here they were, treating me like they had known me all their life, what else could a steel guitar player wish for … besides sharing a dressing room with Dolly and getting paid for it … which also happened!

It may be history for some, but it's memories for me.

Your buddy,
Bobbe Seymour

Janne Lindgren

NEWS BULLETIN: Steel Guitarist SPEEDY WEST passed away today

Posted by TWANGTOWNUSA.COM on November 15, 2003 at 14:20:02:

Speedy passed away at 12.23 P.M.

One of the greatest virtuosos that country music has ever produced, Speedy West bridged the western swing and rockabilly eras with eye-popping steel guitar. Besides contributing to literally thousands of country sessions, West cut many of his own instrumentals, as a solo act and with his guitarist partner Jimmy Bryant. Adept at boogie, blues, and Hawaiian ballads, West played with an infectious joy and daring improvisation that, at its most adventurous, could be downright experimental. It's doubtful whether anyone could collect all of Speedy's solos under one roof, but it was his sessions of the 1950s and early '60s — especially those with Jimmy Bryant — that found his genius at its most freewheeling and dazzling.

President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush to Present the Honor to Strait in the Oval Office

Washington, D.C. (November 12, 2003) - President George W. Bush today announced that George Strait is one of ten recipients of the 2003 National Medal of Arts. The National Medal of Arts is the nation's highest honor for artistic excellence and is given to those who have made extraordinary contributions to the creation, growth and support of the arts in the United States. The President and First Lady Laura Bush will present the awards in an Oval Office ceremony at the White House later today.

“I’m deeply honored to be named as a recipient of the President’s National Medal of Arts,” said Strait. “To think that my career has taken me from the honkytonks of South Texas to the White House is really remarkable. I’m also extremely flattered to be named alongside the other honorees.”

Each year, the National Endowment for the Arts seeks nominations from individuals and organizations across the country. The National Council on the Arts, the Endowment’s Presidentially appointed advisory body, reviews the nominations and provides recommendations to the President, who selects the recipients. The other honorees are Austin City Limits, PBS television program; Beverly Cleary, children’s book author; Rafe Esquith, arts educator; Suzanne Farrell, dancer/choreographer/company director/educator; Buddy Guy, blues musician; Ron Howard, actor/director/writer/producer; Mormon Tabernacle Choir, choral group; Leonard Slatkin, symphony orchestra conductor and Tommy Tune, dancer/actor/choreographer/director.

Alan Jackson And Martina McBride Team Up For Upcoming Tour

Posted by YAHOO NEWS on November 13, 2003 at 11:35:09:

Alan Jackson (news) and Martina McBride (news) are teaming up for a concert tour next year, which is expected to stop hit about 50 North American arena dates beginning in late January. Fans can expect a complete show since there will be no opening act and both artists will play complete sets. The pair is riding high on their recent successes at last week's (Wednesday, November 5) CMA's where Jackson took home the award for best male vocalist, and McBride scored the trophy for best female vocalist. McBride stands alongside Tammy Wynette (news), Loretta Lynn (news) and Reba McEntire (news) as the only women to have won three CMA female vocalist of the year awards.

When it comes to setting career goals, Martina McBride told LAUNCH that she doesn't make any specific plans. "You know I really, believe it or not, don't really plan things like that," McBride said. "I don't really have any big plans. I kind of, you know, take things as they come, hopefully make good decisions--smart decisions for a, you know, long career. I just really hope that I make decisions that will allow me to do this for a really long time because I love country music, and I love this career and, you know, I want to be making records and singing for a long time, so I really just kind of take it as it comes."

McBride's new self-titled album debuted at Number One on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, and it was recently certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites). McBride will kick off her Joy Of Christmas tour on November 28 in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Jackson's been awarded a total of 16 CMA Awards, making him the second most awarded artist in CMA history. He's scheduled to perform at the American Music Awards on Sunday (November 16) in Los Angeles. It airs on ABC at 8/7 Central.

JL.

Question: Please settle an argument. My wife says that Eddy Arnold had the hit record on the song "Room Full Of Roses." I say it was George Morgan. Who is right?
Answer: You won this round! George Morgan, Sons Of The Pioneers, and Mickey Gilley each had hits of  "Room Full Of Roses." Eddy Arnold's "flower song" was "Bouquet Of Roses."

Hej Janne.

//Bosse Radeck, Ordförande i Aros RAWHIDE country music klubb i Västerås.

JL.

========================

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

========================
According to Tom T. Hall, his 1968 hit, "Ballad Of 40 Dollars" was a hard
song to
title!
Tom T. said, "The idea for that song came from the observation of a small
town funeral. And the song deals with hypocrisy too---because people
pretend to be sad and downhearted when someone dies. But the fellow in the
truck who's reciting the conversational song is looking at the situation
much like someone who's seeing such a tragedy outside his family and he's
having real honest feelings and thoughts."

"The song is sort of a confession of a real human being of this day and
age---watching a funeral procession--like his thoughts of "I wonder who's
going to get that truck,"/ "I wonder what his finances were," and the fact
that the guy has to go back to work but he says in the song, that he would
go and see the man put down, but he doesn't own a suit."

"So ...this is the big line---in the song because he doesn't feel that he
belongs to that class of people. It's too bad that one of them died but he
has his own troubles and he doesn't have a suit and that's the thing that's
really bothering him--and not the fact that the guy died and is being
buried."

Tom T. added, "So the song has a message--but I don't know if it came off
like that to very many people. But I have known several people like that
fellow who sat in that truck like he does in the song. And those people
seem to be happier people because they don't pretend to be something
they're not. They're just real people."

He concluded, "The guy doesn't say a thing disrespectful and he hopes the
dead guy rests in peace--but the trouble is the dead guy owes him forty
bucks. One of my jobs as a kid was working in a cemetery--mowing around the
tombstones. You start thinking about all those folks that are gone and you
begin to get an attitude toward it."

"Ballad Of Forty Dollars" was Tom T. Hall's 4th chart single.
It entered the country music charts November 16th, 1968 and peaked at # 4.
It was on the charts for 18 weeks.

Hans platta Oh Lonesome Me (LPM-1743) köpte jag redan den 16 september 1963 och här finns låtar som "I Can´t Stop Loving You", "Take Me As I Am", "Heartbreak Avenue","We Could" och förstås titellåten.

Janne Lindgren

Don Gibson has passed away.
He was born: 4/3/1928
Birthplace: Shelby, NC
Year of Grand Ole Opry Membership: 1958

When considering great country music talents,  Don Gibson's name has to be high on the list.
As a songwriter/artist, Don has composed such classic standards as "Oh, Lonesome Me"
and "I Can't Stop Loving You."

More than 150 artists have recorded the later classic, including Elvis Presley three times.
Don's reap from the song even includes a gold record for the Ray Charles version.

Don knew he had something special the day he composed "I Can't Stop Loving You."
He thought less of "Oh, Lonesome Me," written the same afternoon. "I thought it was nothing at all, so I sent it to Nashville and said, 'Give it to George Jones.'
I had no idea I'd ever cut it, but Chet Atkins and Wesley Rose said
that was the one they wanted me to record. I said, 'I don't want to do that junk. I thought you'd given it to George.' Well they insisted, so I said, 'I'll do it if you let me put 'I Can't Stop Loving You' on the back. I think it's the best song.' They didn't want to. Then they said they would but weren't going to push it , and they didn't."

Gibson also wrote such songs as "Blue Blue Day," "Legend in my Time," "Sweet Dreams," "Too Soon To Know," "Guess Away The Blues," "Country Green," "Who Cares" and scores of others.

As a teenager, he worked at a variety of jobs, including one in the textile mills in his native North Carolina, "hopping curbs and even delivering baby diapers," he recalled.
He worked to make enough money to finance his efforts to be an entertainer and songwriter.

He was still a youngster when he moved to Knoxville to perform on the WNOX Tennessee Barn Dance and Midday Merry-Go-Round. He soon organized his first band in the area.
He then met Wesley Rose, president of Acuff-Rose Publishing in Nashville.
Rose heard some of Don's songs and sought him out. And just as Rose's father, Fred, discovered Hank Williams, Wesley discovered Don Gibson.

Don signed a songwriting contract with Rose and a recording contract with RCA. His first single was "Too Soon To Know," and the second "Oh, Lonesome Me," swept every major award in the country music field in 1958. During this period, Don joined the Grand Ole Opry as a regular. He rejoined the Opry in 1975. But the nicest thing that ever happen to him, in his own words, "is her," his wife, Bobbi, a beautiful, charming girl from his hometown.

Question: Back in the 60's, there was a great song on the radio about "A Stranger Was
Here," but I don't remember the singer's name. Do you know and was the record a hit?
Answer: "A Stranger Was Here" was Darrell McCall's first chart single. It peaked at
# 17 in 1963 and was on the charts for 8 weeks.

ON THIS DATE (November 18): Country Music's Top Tunes Were:
1949 Slipping Around - Margaret Whiting & Jimmy Wakely
1957 Wake Up Little Susie - The Everly Brothers
1965 Hello Vietnam - Johnny Wright
1973 Paper Roses - Marie Osmond
1981 My Baby Thinks He's a Train - Rosanne Cash
1989 Bayou Boys - Eddy Raven

Mer om Don Gibson:
The songwriter and singer who wrote three of the most famous songs in country music history has died in Nashville. Don Gibson was pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital on Monday evening (Nov. 17). He was 75, and death was due to natural causes.

Although well known as an artist, Gibson once said, "I consider myself a songwriter who sings rather than a singer who writes songs." One of those songs was "Sweet Dreams," which was a 1956 hit for both Faron Young and Gibson and which landed Gibson a songwriting contract with premier Nashville publisher Acuff-Rose and a record deal with MGM. He wrote his other two landmark songs in a Knoxville, Tenn., trailer park in one afternoon: "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Oh Lonesome Me."

After charting a No. 9 hit with his single of "Sweet Dreams," Gibson left MGM for RCA. Chet Atkins produced his first singles in 1957. The recording of "Oh Lonesome Me" went to No. 1 and is now regarded as one of the prime early examples of what came to be known as the "Nashville Sound." With its use of piano, drums, guitars and background singers -- in place of the traditional steel guitar and fiddle -- "Oh Lonesome Me" set the prototype
for the cleaner, sweeter sound that Atkins at RCA and Owen Bradley at Decca were championing.

He was born as Donald Eugene Gibson on April 3, 1928 in Shelby, N.C. Influenced by the mellow country sounds of Red Foley and Tennessee Ernie Ford, he began working local clubs while still in high school. After graduation, he pursued music while working a series of jobs as soda jerk, baby diaper deliveryman and dishwasher. He worked his way onto the local
radio station, WHOS, with a group called Sons of the Soil, in 1948. With some early success, he recorded briefly for Columbia. He moved to the regional country music center, Knoxville, and played on the WNOX Midday Merry-Go-Round and Barn Dance series there. Wesley Rose of Acuff-Rose signed him to a writing contract after seeing Gibson perform in a Knoxville club. He came to Atkins' attention and, after "Oh Lonesome Me," recorded a string of hits, including "Blue Blue Day," "Sea of Heartbreak" and "Lonesome Number One."

With success came personal setbacks, however. Drug and alcohol problems plagued him, and he later said that he became hooked on speed when a doctor first prescribed it for his weight problem. Unknowingly, he wrote the song that would best describe himself and his career in 1960: "(I'd be) A Legend in My Time." Eventually, he went back to Shelby, met Bobbi Patterson, who became his second wife and who was instrumental in turning his life around.
They moved to Nashville where he devoted his life to songwriting, while continuing to record.

In all, Gibson charted 82 songs himself, with three going to No. 1 -- "Oh Lonesome Me," "Blue Blue Day" and "Woman (Sensuous Woman)." Gibson was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1973 and into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. His songs were recorded by many artists, the most famous example being Ray Charles' 1962 cover of "I Can't Stop Loving You," which topped the pop charts for five weeks.
