BONNIE OWENS HAS PASSED AWAY
Reported By Tracey K. Houston & Tracy Pitcox
The
news is just breaking, but Bonnie Owens has just died at the age of 76.
She was a great lady and one that was always filled with joy and
happiness.
She was married to both Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, being one of only
two
ladies that were married to two Country Music Hall of Famers.
When Merle and Leona Williams married, Bonnie was even Leona's maid of
honor.
I spent some time with Bonnie in Ft. Worth, Branson (a couple of
occassions)
and in San Angelo, Texas. Each time she was very generous with her time
and
talents. She loved music, her fans and most of all the business so much.
She will be greatly missed.

JL.

Hej Janne
(Country Music
People, februar 2001):
"The market place determines where it's gonna go and people are gonna buy
what they're gonna buy. There are a lot of people putting their hands in
the air because it's in a state of change right now and that scares them.
They're saying it's too pop, let's take it back to its roots".
"But people are quick to forget. When Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson
came on the scene the were so revolutionary. They were rock 'n' rollers.
Now, people are sying why can't it be like the old Willie and Waylon
stuff....."

STORY BEHIND THE
SONG
According to Billy Wallace,
Webb Pierce’s 1950’s hit song, “Back Street
Affair,” came from a
real slice of life. Wallace commented, “I know “Back Street Affair”
because I’ve lived one. There were songs written about married people
slipping around but none about young girls. I kept seeing married men
slipping around with younger girls. And then it happened to me and my own
“Back Street Affair.” The girl knew how to make a married man feel at ease
with her dark eyes and her winning smile. But that’s life. That’s a “Back
Street Affair.” I know it because I’ve lived it.”
Webb Pierce’s Decca
recording of “Back Street Affair” entered the country music charts
October 4th, 1952 and made it to number one, where it stuck
for four weeks. It was his 3rd charted song and was on the
country music charts for 23 weeks.

touring together and have found their political opinions to be very
similar. Haggard now says that he and Dylan have exchanged thoughts on

just peons with opinions.” The tour continues on to Knoxville, TN on
Thursday, Atlanta on Friday, Asheville, NC on Saturday and Savannah, GA on

Hello
fellow players,
Ever notice the difference in styles of the different older players?
Listen to the difference between Don Helms and Buddy Emmons. The
difference between Little Roy Wiggins and Pete Drake. Just like the
differences in everyone's personality, there are tremendous differences in
their playing. Not everybody wants to play like Curly Chalker or Paul
Franklin.
I asked Don Helms the other day, how he felt about his own playing. He
said, "I'm comfortable with it, I've been doing it a long time and it has
paid well over the last 65 years."
I asked him, "Have you ever wanted to play like Buddy Emmons?"
His reply was, "It might be nice to be able to, but I probably wouldn't in
public. Again, I'm comfortable with what I do and I like what I do."
This is what got me thinking about the differences in playing styles.
Jerry Byrd could have gone to pedal guitar but preferred not to. Don
Helms went back to non-pedal guitar full time after playing pedal for 30
years. Most people say he sounds better now.
I remember someone asking Jimmy Day once, "What would you do if you could
play "Rocky Top" a hundred miles an hour and be the envy of all the speed
pickers and banjo players?"
Jimmy just smiled and said, "I wouldn't."
This brings up another great observation. Buddy Emmons has spent a
lifetime basking in the limelight as being one of the finest and fastest
steel players in the world, with good taste in Bebop, who's execution is
as good as anybody's possibly ever. However, the thing I admire most
about Buddy is his taste in knowing how, when and why to play the correct
thing at the right time.
I have seen Buddy play the exact melody to steel guitar rag the way it was
written, all the way through with no Bebop or Jazz anywhere in it. When
he plays "Midnight in Amarillo", "Sleepwalk", "Harbor Lights" or whatever,
he plays the melodies the way it should be, knowing that 98% of the people
listening want to know and recognize the melody throughout the entire
song.
I hear younger players today, playing the same licks in every song they
know and between songs they are practicing playing these licks just as
fast as they can play them. Somehow, they manage to fit these licks into
everything from "Rocky Top" to "The Waltz You Save For Me" and every other
song throughout the night. Many of these players, young and old, can play
some atrociously fast, pre-rehearsed licks, but would have to work on the
simple melody for ten minutes before they could play it.
You might say just playing the melody all the time, that's boring. Well
it's not boring if you try to play it with great soul, tone, feel and
execution. Listen to what I'm saying and think about it. If you play a
gorgeous turnaround in the middle of the song that everyone can
understand, to the correct inflections, tone and feeling, you'll get more
compliments from anyone than you would if you played "Foggy Mountain
Breakdown" in the middle of the song. After all, the singer doesn't sing
"The Auctioneer" in the middle of "Help Me Make It Through The Night" just
because he can.
It may be a good idea to think outside the box, the box being what you
hear every other steel player doing. Don't worry about what they are
doing or what they are playing or the licks they have come up with, but
instead worry about the bandleader, the club owner or anyone that's paying
you, the people that have come to see you and worry about those that want
to hear the melody to "Last Date" or "Sleepwalk", even "Steel Guitar Rag"
when they request it.
You want to show off once in a while? Sure, but don't make a career of
it. I was playing an extremely fast lick one time in a club and Doug
Jernigan walked in. I played everything I knew just as fast as I could in
4 bars. He walked up to me on the bandstand, shook his head and said,
"Hey man, don't do that. Think about your wife and kids."
He broke into a laugh and said, "That stuff will never get you into the
grocery store."
I must have listened to him a lot because as any of you that know me,
realize that I've been to the grocery store too much. As a matter of
fact, let's call this newsletter "Food" for thought.

här uppe hemma i norra Sverige.
hemma". Hälsningar Lars Lasse Valle Laban Jaja
(Michael
Lindgren rapporterar från amerikas sydstater)
Two big things has happened to me. First, I have been playing the No 1
replica of the unique Jimmie Rodgers Martin 000-45 guitar, the original
being made in 1928. The original is in a safety vault at the Jimmie
Rodgers
Museum here. That is valued to more than 1 million dollars. Last year I
had
the great honor of holding that priceless instrument in my hands, as
Birgiita took some good pictures. The copy I have been trying for a couple
of hours yesterday, is "only" worth 30.000 dollars, which certainly makes
it
a very valuable instrument here on this Earth. I can assure you I was very
careful.
Secondly, I have made some great discoveries at the Meridian Archives -
like
his personal photo albums from Jimmie Rodgers family. To my knowledge
these
have never been used, and there are fantastic pictures in them of this
great
artist and other big country stars of the time. As you may know, Bob Dylan
has made a tribute cd for Jimmie Rodgers. Please, listen to it, and listen
to Jimmie himself on his records, and remember to read what Bob says about
this son of Meridian. Being a scholar and a historian, and thus interested
in research as I am, I am going back to the archives tomorrow (third day
now) to dig up his personal belongings an more unknown photographic
material
from the 1920' and 30's. Yes, I take pictures with my digital camera. By
the
way, this is the first time I have ever sung and yodeled in a archive. I
did
that yesterday and today - many songs for staff and visitors - and armed
guards. The crowd grows for every day. Hitherto, I have had to be ever so
silent at Kungliga Bibliotekets reading room in Stockholm; The British
Library, and the Library of Congress and the National Archives. But after
this ...
I sung a lot during the festival for the professional BBQ teams that
entered
the great BBQ Contest they had here. They gave me beer, coca cola and
other
good drinks, and food. I made many new very kind friends among them.
Everybody was screaming to me - "Hey, come on over here and sing for us
and
we'll give you coffee or a piece of mighty fine grilled pork"! The team I
sung most for, while they were preparing the whole pig, won the contest's
Grand Prize. They said that it was the music that did it. I don't know.
But
now I know how to BBQ a whole pig, which is enough for 50 persons - if
anybody is interested in information directly from the winners. They even
won over the World Champion Team 2005 that participated!
Today I was at radiostation Classic Country 95.1 and sung with the radio
people there and made an interview their biggest radio man - Jay King.
Tomorrow I will drive over the border to Alabama and Montgomery to see the
Cadillac Hank Williams died in, in 1953, when he was only 29. There's
gonna
be a jam session with Hank's music at the Hank Williams Museum there on
Saturday night. I'll be there with my guitar! On Sunday I will be singing
in
a Honky Tonk, in a place called the Cab, here in Meridian again - with
Britt
Gully and his band = Jimmie, Hank and Carter Family songs. First occation
for me with a professional American band on stage. Britt Gully is the best
singer in Meridian.
I have been talking a lot to black men, like taxidrivers over here. They
all
like country music, here in the South. One of them said "You gotta get a
name, Man. Michael, that's fine, but that Lingrenn something won't do at
all! That ain't nothin' good. And you ain't no Hank, Man. Promise me ya'
gatta get ya'self a goo' name soon Man"! Well, I shook hand with him and
made him that promise.
I enclose a picture of a hog, some really kind nice big boys and me.
They are the winning BBQ team.
I am the one with the guitar!
Until next time, Y'all take goo' care o' ya'self!

Hello
fellow players,
I'm going to touch on a subject this week that affects steel players
directly but also anyone who can play any instrument and even affects
people who don't play an instrument but would like to. The subject is
resophonic guitars, most of which are commonly referred to as Dobros.
Dobro is a brand name coming from a contraction of the proclaimed
inventors of this instrument, the Dopera Brothers, so we will refer to all
brands as Dobros in this newsletter.
First off, let me say that the tone, sound and playing of this instrument
is very much in demand and has been for years. Remember that great movie,
"Waterhole Number Nine" that Roger Miller sang all the way through
accompanied primarily by Dobro? Many movies today and hundreds of
television shows use Dobro as a backup instrument.
Primarily an acoustic six string, square neck guitar, played with a steel
bar and metal finger picks. The strings raised off the neck so they do
not touch the fretboard when you use the bar on it. The bar itself is
technically the fret. This is an easy instrument to play, as I have said,
and some people have taken it to an incredible art form, such as Mike
Auldridge, Jerry Douglas, Tim Graves and many others that you'll see or
hear as you listen to all kinds of music.
Many great steel guitar players have taken advantage of the fact that they
already have the basics to play good Dobro, like the picks on the right
hand and bar technique with the left hand. However, Dobro requires a
different attack and mindset to make it sound authentic. What I'm saying
here is, why not take advantage of the abilities you already have and
expand your marketability and value as a player. There will always be
something that you can use Dobro on.
Remember the great Ray Price album that was done all acoustically? It
came out about 5 years ago. Buddy Emmons, true to form, played some of
the most tasteful Dobro sounds ever heard. I think of other steel players
who doubled on this fine acoustic instrument. Lloyd Green on all those
fine Don Williams recordings. Nashville's busiest studio musician, Sonny
Garrish is also a Dobro player as are Paul Franklin, Stu Basore, Tommy
White and many others.
Sure, many of the steel guitar players may not burn one up like Mike
Auldridge, Tim Graves or Uncle Josh Graves himself, but then again,
sometimes just having that wonderful tone and beautiful things played on
the record, movie soundtrack or commercial is very welcomed after being
inundated with screaming, distorted Telecaster noise.
I'll never forget my first Dobro session. In 1972, I was called to play
steel guitar on a big band Johnny Cash session and they said "Be sure to
bring your Dobro". Well, I quickly traded Paul Yandel out of his metal
body round neck, put an extended nut to raise the strings and off to the
session I trundled. Well, this session went to number one and it was the
first session I ever played Dobro on. The next session I used Dobro on,
or the second time I ever played Dobro was on the great Johnny Rivers "Six
Days On The Road". I had the intro and the turnaround. The record went
to number one and stayed there for several weeks. I still don't call
myself a Dobro player because of being on these hit records, even though
luckily, everybody in Nashville thought I was.
So here is my suggestion. Get a Dobro regardless of what brand. There
are many great brands like Beard, Shearhorn, Dobro itself, Fluger and the
resonator guitars built by Todd Clinesmith in California. Heartland
Instruments here in Hendersonville, who are famous for their banjos, also
build great Dobros. I'm sure I'm leaving somebody out, but not on
purpose.
If you can already play steel, you'll find it easy to step into Dobro.
Use a "G" tuning, an "Am7" tuning, "E" or whatever you like. You can
invent your own style or pattern yourself after the greats like Mike
Auldridge or Josh Graves. No matter what you do, you will be appreciated
much more as a musician if you add this new dimension and learn to play it
well. I'm here to help you with this in any way I can.
If you're a country music fan who plays nothing now, Dobro may be an
instrument to introduce yourself to.
Your buddy, Bobbe Seymour

country festivaler i landet. Måste man
Hälsningar Tony i Västerås
Men………..

i amerikas sydstater, rapport nr 3)
Howdy
all! Doin' fine all the way. Another short report:
Drove to Montgomery Alabama and visted Hank Williams Museum last weekend.
Was asked to sing for the staff and the visitors. Great success and these
people know the business! Went down to Georgiana, Hank Williams'
birthplace
and Boyhood Home Museum, and the H. W. International Fan Club. Sung for
the
staff and guests there too. Was invited for lunch. Was invited to sing
next
day at Hank Williams Museum. Sang 7 songs there that were sent on air -
RADIO WIKR Prattville, Alabama live - with a Hank Williams band with
lapsteel and all. Wonderful! They liked it and all invited me to come back
with my sweet Birgitta too sing again soon. Went up to Hank Williams' and
his wifes Audrey's gravesite at Oakwood cemetary in Montgomey. Sat there
and
honored them by singing their songs for them. Sung "Darling let's turn
back
the Years" when a truck pulled up. I went up to the man to talk, and he
had
that very song playing on his radio! Strange, we thought! He said, that he
had lived in Montgomery all his life, for 32 years, and always loved
Hank's
songs, when he all of a sudden decided to go up to see the grave.
Drove back to Meridian through raging thunderstorms. Had breakfast on
Monday
at Jeans' Restaurent and was asked to sing. Yodeled some Jimme blues away
and my breakfast was paid for by a happy guest. Got one dollar tip too,
and
found another dollar on the street. Good way to start a long trip. Took a
Greyhound bus to Nashville, Tennessee (8.5 hours) - and here I am!
Yesterday
I went to Gibson banjo, mandolin and dobro factory, where all those
original
fine USA Gibson instruments are hand made for the whole world, by 12
people!
Talked long to the guys and got some really interesting inside
information.
Went to the Grand Old Opry Tuesday show. Among other artist there were big
ones like songwriter and singer Bill Anderson, Porter Wagoner, and Del
McCoury Band.
Today I have played at small bar, Bobby's at Music Row, and tested some of
my songs on builders, carpenters and other workmen. They want me back
tomorrow evening to pay more. Just now I sung four songs at Legends Corner
at Broadway and had two expert musicians playing guitar with me - Bart
Hansen (Loretta Lynns guitar player) and Eddie Lange (who plays steel
guitar
for Bill Andersson - and did yesterday on the BIG stage). I was stopped on
my way to this computer (internet place) and just did a couple of songs in
the street for air hostesses from North Carolina - on Broadway - good
respons and pictures.
That's
all for now. Representing Sweden here., All the best!

spelande under lång tid!
Hoppas allt är väl med er. Mvh Berra
JL.
STORY
BEHIND THE SONG
According to Eddy Arnold,
his 1948 top ten hit , “Molly
Darling” was
not that big a hit , but it turned out to be a song that everybody seemed
to like.
Eddy commented, “I don’t
even remember who I first hear sing that song, but I actually learned the
song from an old song folio that I found....I don’t even remember where I
found it...but I liked the song and started singing it. It’s a great old
tune. I started singing it on radio and personal appearances and everybody
liked it and kept asking for it so I kept singing it. “
-
·
* * According to
the record books, “Molly Darling” was written by Civil War composer Will
S. Hayes, who lived from 1937 -1907. * * *
Eddy Arnolds record of
“Molly Darling,” entered the country music charts February 7th,
1948 and made it to number ten. It was Eddy’s 10th charted
song.
STORY
BEHIND THE SONG
According to Sonny James,
his recording contract with Capitol Records came about as a direct result
of Chet Atkins, although Chet was with RCA Victor Records. Sonny says he
had just received his military discharge following 15 months overseas. He
immediately went to Nashville, Tennessee and was spending a few days at
Chet Atkins’ house. During that time, Capitol Records’ Ken Nelson dropped
by Chet’s home for a visit and Sonny sang him a few songs while they all
sat around in Chet’s den. As a result of that impromptu meeting, Nelson
offered Sonny James a Capitol recording contract. It was also Nelson’s
idea to change to change Sonny’s name from James Hugh Loden to Sonny
James.
Sonny received the song “Heaven
Says Hello” from his
longtime friend Cindy Walker. And the arrangements for Sonny James
recordings came about because he would go over and over the songs while he
was on the road-before each recording session.
Sonny said, “I’d always
have a very specific arrangement in my mind. I never wrote them down, but
they were in my mind. I’d just hear those arrangements and they would
stick. Each time I would hear a song for the first time that we were going
to record, I would start working on that arrangement in my mind.”
Sonny James placed 72 songs
on the country music charts between 1953 and 1983...including twenty three
number ones.
“Heaven Says Hello” entered
the country music charts June 1st, 1968 and made it to number
one. It was Sonny’s 27th charted song and was on the country
charts for 17 weeks.
Hello
fellow players,
Words to the working musicians from the old musicians who have been
there. All songs should have intros and instrumental breaks in the
middle. For dances, especially in the world of Western Swing, the intro
should usually be 16 bars, which could either be a verse, a chorus or what
would normally be called the release, or the last verse out after the
bridge.
Where people are dancing, there should be long intros, long instrumental
turnarounds, meaning 16 bar intros and a minimum of no less than 32 bar
turnarounds. The fault of many country bands playing around the United
States is, they feel in order to be like the record, they should play a
little short intro of 4 bars and an instrumental of no longer than 8.
This is a poor way to run a song to dance to. By the time a guy gets up,
decides whether he wants to dance or not, puts his beer and a cigarette
down, walks over to the pretty girl he wants to dance with 7 tables away,
asks her to dance and she puts her cigarette and beer down and by the time
they get to the dance floor, the song is over.
At least the Western Swing guys in Texas and Oklahoma who grew up on Bob
Wills, Billy Gray, Hank Thompson and the great Western Swing dance bands
of yesteryear, know to make the song at least 6 to 8 minutes long. And
also don't be afraid to put a little space between the songs. Let the
dancers on the floor have a little silence to whisper in each others ears
without your PA blasting them with a lot of musical nonsense before they
can get back to their seats and pick up their beer and cigarette again.
Remember this, the reason that intros are short on Nashville country
records and instrumental breaks in the middle are short, is because there
is very little time to present the singer and the words on a CD that will
be acceptable for airplay. When you are in a club playing a dance, you're
not on the radio. To do your job well for the dancers in the club, don't
play a 2 minute and 30 second version of a song for folks to dance to
because that's the length the CD was when you heard it on the radio.
Remember, most of the dancers aren't paying attention to the singer and
the words anyway. They are feeling the bass and the drums and each other
and the overall ambiance of the tune. If we have any singers reading
this, let your band do the work. Don't start off singing "Welcome To My
World" all by yourself with no intro regardless of how good you may think
you are. You're paying the band, let them work.
Next band rehearsal, start working on making your dance tunes longer by
extending intros and instrumental breaks.
I remember one time, I was working with George Jones and after an
especially hard night, I got up out of my motel room bed, knocked on
George's door and entered and looked him in the eye and said, "George, I
dreamed you died and went to Heaven and you walked in through the Pearly
Gates and there was our Lord standing in a white marble auditorium,
wrapped in purple velvet with ermine trim, singing the most beautiful
country music song that has ever been sung." God said, "Here you are
George, and you thought you were the greatest country music singer ever!"
George looked at me from across the motel room and said to me, "Seymour, I
am. You MUST HAVE been dreaming!" Remember that George?

tiden! Här lite nyheter!
Janne Lindgren
Hej!
I programmet (Country,

Country festivaler + Lonesome Pine Countryfestival och The Ultimate
köra uppe i Torsby.
- vågar man
inget vinnar man inget är vår paroll.
Ha en trevlig Country sommar!
Peter Jonsson
www.lonesomepine.nu

Stockholms
Country Music Club hade klubbträff i torsdags i klubblokalen på
Östgötagatan i Stockholm.

jag slinka in i Kountry Korral-butiken här i Västerås. En guldgruva för en
ung liten cowboy...
Hälsningar

Hallo cowboy och tack för uppgifterna!

Hej
Janne,

30 st).

Hello fellow players,
Many people have asked me about Hendersonville through the years knowing
that several of their idols in the music business live here and it was the
home of Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty & Twitty City, Roy Orbison, Marty
Stuart, Connie Smith, Billy Walker, Dan Seals, Jean Shepard, Ricky Scaggs,
Gary Allan, David Allan Coe, our neighbors The Oak Ridge Boys and at least
a hundred music stars who are household names.
All this in a town so small you can drive from one end to the other in 5
minutes if the lights are right. It's hard to go anywhere in town without
running into someone you've heard of all your life in the music business.
Hendersonville is to the country music business what Beverly Hills is to
the movie industry. We work downtown on Music Row and come home to
Hendersonville.
Steel guitar players such as Don Helms, John Hughey, Smiley Roberts, Penn
Pennington, Lynn Owsley, Barbara Ann Mandrell, Sonny Garrish, Monte Good,
Weldon Myrick, Russ Hicks, Steve Hinson, Gary Hogue, Frank Arnett, John
Bechtel, Jim Vest, Jimmy Crawford, Mike Douchette, Harold Fogle and Paul
Franklin to name a few, all live or have lived in Hendersonville.
Hendersonville has many, many miles of coastline on beautiful Old Hickory
lake which to many of us steel players, is an added plus to living in this
little town. I have been here for forty years and being on the road and
seeing everywhere, I can understand why Kiplinger has chosen Nashville as
the number one town to live in in the U.S. and Hendersonville is one of
the best suburbs of Nashville. After all, we have the lake.
Let me quote from the Kiplinger website.
"The Kiplinger 50
To come up with this list of cities, we began by surveying you, our
readers, to see what factors you consider most important when choosing a
place to live. The top two were cost of living and cost of housing.
Quality health care and a low crime rate were also among your top
requirements.
To broaden the appeal of the cities on the list, we also factored in
economic vitality, we gave points to well-diversified economies that are
good places to start or expand businesses. In addition, we looked at
quality of life, which by our definition means the variety of cultural and
recreational activities available."
Naturally, I feel if you are in the music business, as most steel players
are, if you can't move here, at least come and visit me in Hendersonville
next time you're in Tennessee. How many other small towns in the United
States have "Johnny Cash Parkway" or "Barbara Mandrell Blvd"?
Every week many cherished friends and steel players come by to visit.
This week we were blessed with the appearance of a dear friend, Terry
Bethel, who is back with Mel Tillis for the third time around. So if you
see Mel Tillis in the next few weeks, Terry said he'd buy you a cup of
coffee.
All the black Peavey 112's are gone and will not be back in stock for a
couple of months. The colored ones are still available, Terry loves the
ostrich burgundy one, so give me a call while I still have a few.
Talking about old friends, Gary Talley came up in conversation yesterday.
Gary is one of the finest, most tasteful players out there. He has that
rare ability to play exactly what is needed at exactly the right time and
all my regular readers know that players who can't do this are one of my
biggest pet peeves. This is something everyone should strive for. If you
don't know who Gary is, you should visit his website at
www.garytalley.com and find out.
Your buddy,
Bobbe Seymour

Hi Dear
Friends,
This is the 26th day in USA. Still in Nashville. I will leave for Los
Angeles on Monday morning. Many nice little things have happened, and keep
on happening, and this sure is a good school of life and music. A lot of
job
too, carrying the guitar and the cameras, writing etc..
I have spent many hours at the world famous Ryman Auditorium. This is the
scene of the oldest, still going on radio show in the world - The Grand
Old
Opry - broadcasted live since 1925. (Now from another place). On this
stage
Hank Williams sung his "Lovesick Blues" in 1949 - and the women fainted!
Probably first time in music history. They called him in to sing it 9
times!
Well, I have now sung that good powerful song on the same stage too,
several
times, for the staff and the visitors. The small groups that come in varies
between 20 and 80 people at the time, and they sure like the old stuff.
The Ryman is also a museum and a stage for shows, still very much alive.
Last week e. g. James Taylor performed here. The boss and the staff want's
me to come and sing all the time, and I am there about every second day,
singing for about 3 to 4 hours! I can now come and go as I please, since
the
supervisor of the Ryman has given me free tickets and told his staff about
it. This is a very special place for yet another reason. The acoustics are
the third best in the country - and I can tell you - it is unbelievable to
stand and sing Hank's songs, Jimme's, Carter Family's and Birgitta's and
my
songs at the Ryman! I have had to do requests all the time - and I just
love
this.
I have been singing at many open mic-places - the songs that I have
written.
I have tested about 10 of them. Very good and much appreciation. All the
people that I have met, wanna hear the old songs. They are really tired of
the modern stuff the radio stations produce, against the majority of the
listeners, it seems. I agree, much is, but not all, I would like to say,
another form of "air pollution".
I am opened minded and walk around with hat and my guitar - so little
wonderful things happen all the time. I stood in the street the other day
and a car pulled up. - Where are you from, said the couple inside? From
Sweden. I sung them one song and they gave me 20 dollars tip! A group of
tourists waited for the driver in a small bus. They asked me to sing them
a
song. The driver came - we rode around the block and I sung 5 or 6 songs.
They were so happy that gave me 52 dollars. A soldier gave me a big
genuine
silver dollar from 1922 at the Ryman after I took some pictures of him,
and
sung his request song - "Long gone lonesome Blues" - by Hank! That was a
very very fine gesture. He asked me if I could come out to Fort Campbell
and
sing for 20.000 soldiers. I said yes! He was to check it out with the
generals he knew if it was possible before I left town. If not this time,
he
said, hopefully in the future! So we will keep in touch. When that day
comes, Birgitta must be singing by my side.
It is a miracle just to be here and walk the streets. Just to talk to e.
g.
the Hells Angels types, as I did this week, on their new Harleys about my
old ones (1931 and 1946) - that makes them so excited. Probably nothing
else
does. One very tough looking guy said; - "I had to beat up three guys to
get
this bike". - "I said, only three"? He looked mean, but then he laughed -
and the the others too! Was he the leader? I am walking down and up
Broadway, in and out in the bars. My guitar in my hand. Wrote some new
songs. Good but lonely life and VERY educating - to talk and sing to all
these ordinary people - all the time - policemen, waitresses, attorneys
and
bums - what thoughts, what stories, what knowledge and experiences! I
walked
in to this bar on Broadway yesterday, and a very BIG guy came up after a
while, as I stood in the sun in the door with my hat and guitar. He said:
I
just have to shake your hand, Bad Ass Man. You see, we made a bet, and the
other guys in my gang thought that I was the only one big enough to handle
you." (In the event this Ramblin' Hobo of yours, would beat him up, I
understood).
"You sure look like a Mean Ole Bad Ass Dude from the Deep South that just
came in from the Crossroads."
These little things sort'a makes ya' feel a little bit more comfortable in
this big land.
I met Dan Ekbaeck at Bluewatermusic here in town. He is a very nice guy
from
Stockholm who has been in the music business long. He took me for lunch
and
he learned me a lot about the country music business here, during the
almost
5 hours we spoke. Thank you, Danne!
After many trials and tribulations, I finally found at got to meet with
Don
Helms yesterday. He was Hank Williams' steel guitar player, and is the
only
surviving member of Hank's band the Drifting Cowboys. As you know, Hank
died
in 1953, 29 years old. We had some wonderful hours together and he played
those great songs on his original Gibson guitar for me, from back then. He
and his wonderful wife Hazel, told me amazing stories about the old times,
about their personal fiends Hank, Ray Price, Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline -
all great stars Don had played with! I will write article about all of
this!
I found a Friend there, and I appreciate that meeting immensely. He is 79
years old but will keep on playing the old songs as long as he can.
Yesterday, I also visted the grave sites of Mother Maybelle Carter, Anita
Carter and Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter. Fine moment. In this
place,
Luther Perkins, the wild and funny guitar, who played with the special
Johnny Cash sound, also rests. They all sleep in a pieceful cemetary in
Hendersonville, where Johhny and June, and their best friend and neighbor
Roy Orbison, all lived by the lake.
I have many pictures and videofilms showing it all.
All for now. They staff are waiting at the Ryman.
Then I just must try to play in the street - Broadway.
Best regards.

There
is no way that I can find the right words to say with this email. My
heart is heavy and I have prayed as hard as I know how. I regret to send
the following news:
Approx. 12:40AM (5/21/06)
Billy Walker, his wife
Bettie Walker, musicians Charlie Lilly Jr., and Daniel Patton Sr., lost
their lifes in a one car accident on I-65-11 miles N. of Ft. Deposit, Al.
Injured in the accident was Joshua Brooks who was traveling with the
group. He is in an Alabama hospital, and I do not know the extent of his
injuries at this time. (I do not have details of the accident at this
time)
Please keep in your prayers
the families of our lost loved ones, and special prayers for Joshua Brooks
that he will recover.
The Grand Ole Opry and our
country music industry has been devastated once again by this terrible
accident. We have lost a great man, a great christian, a super
singer/entertainer and songwriter. His wife, Bettie Walker was by his
side as a driving force in his super successful career, and she was so
much a part of the country music industry and the Grand Ole Opry-always
working within the industry for charitable events and promoting events
that focused on the veterans of country music and The Grand Ole Opry.
There are no words that
can express the empty feeling that our Hendersonville community, The Grand
Ole Opry, and country music and all music genre's are experiencing at this
time. The lost of Charlie Lilly and Danny Patton who were so much a part
of country music, not only as musicians, but as family men and wonderful
human beings.
I do not have any funeral
arrangements at this time, but I will pass them on as I receive them.
Please ask our Blessed Lord
to hold each of their families in his loving arms and comfort them in
their needs through his powerful intercession. I know that he has
received Billy, Bettie, Charlie and Danny into his arms and they are
at home with their Lord.
And once again, please pray
hard for Joshua Brooks.
MAY BILLY, BETTIE, CHARLIE
AND DANNIE'S SOULS REST IN PEACE.
inspelning.

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060522/ENTERTAINMENT01/605220338
Billy Walker, 77, a star of the Grand Ole Opry for 46 years, died early
Sunday morning in an automobile accident that also claimed the lives of
his wife, Bettie, 61, and band members Charles Lilly Jr., 44, and Daniel
Patton Sr., 40.
The Walkers’ grandson
Joshua Brooks, 21, of Hendersonville, was also critically injured in the
one-vehicle crash that took place on Interstate 65 south of Montgomery,
Ala. Walker and his band were driving back toward Middle Tennessee, having
performed Saturday night at the Palm Lake Opry & RV Park in Foley, Ala.,
when their van ran off the interstate and overturned, according to Alabama
state troopers.
Known as “The Tall
Texan,” Mr. Walker is known for country hits including “Funny How Time
Slips Away,” “Cross The Brazos At Waco” and “Charlie’s Shoes.” With
dashing looks and a smooth tenor voice, he emerged from the Dallas-area
music scene and became a Nashville luminary, joining the Grand Ole Opry in
1960.
Hi Janne,
This email
is to ask everyone's forgiveness for posting that Joshua Brooks had passed
away this morning. At this time he is still in critical condition in a
hospital in Alabama. I am truly sorry for this mistake of such a great
magnitude. I took the information from a source that I know would not
have sent it to me if they had not heard it from somone. But that is not
like me, because I am so very cautious in sending out information that
needs to handled so delicately.
Please
accept my deepest apologies and we need to continue to pray that Joshua
recovers from his injuries.
With
Deepest Sorrow I am asking all of you for your understanding for this
mistake.

Hej Janne.
lokalradion i Östergötland.
folketshus i tisdags förra veckan.
godo. Här är länken. Skrolla in ca 42 min i sändningen. Hoppas den
fungerar!

Men sitt
varven.

Nyhetsbrev! Varsågoda!

This is a real sad day for us in Tomboola band.......
We lost our dear old friend Mary Nielsen
from Odense Denmark yesterday....after a looooong struggle against
her big pain.....a BIG heart for humanity and for Countrymusic has
stopped....
Our
hearts bleeds for her....and tears are running......We hope that there is
a life for you somewhere without pain....
Mary you are our hero, we will never ever forget you!
Mary
may our God be with you

Hi Janne,

Hello fellow players,
I
know we all hate rehearsals unless we are getting paid or reap a mutual
reward.
Rehearsal is the chance for everyone in the group to meld their ideas and
sound together into a tasteful, quality sound. Unfortunately, most
rehearsals do no accomplish this task. I am not a real rock n roll fan at
all, however, I was totally impressed by a live Eagles show that I had the
privilege of witnessing. The slow songs were quiet, big, beautiful and
tasteful. Even the faster, loud, raucous songs were tasteful and
extremely listenable.
Upon hearing one of the members talk later, I realized why this band was
head and shoulders above most others. This member relayed and confirmed
many thoughts that I have had in the past. He said rehearsals are the
heart of any good, tasteful sounding band.
As we all know, the voices are a big part of the Eagles band. They sing
individually, then they sing all together. During rehearsals they pull
five chairs around in a circle, they all listen intently to each other,
what they're saying, how they're thinking, along with how they're
singing. This really made me think. I have worked several jobs in
Nashville live in the past few years and witnessed many local bands where
the individuals in the band didn't even act like there was anybody else on
the stage. Everyone was so wrapped up in themselves that they paid no
attention to being part of the team.
A well thought out rehearsal and then people playing what they rehearsed,
could make the band sound much more like a team effort. I'm saying this
because I remember rehearsing with one so-called new Nashville star
recording artist for three days to do a very important showcase. When we
got to the showcase, this vocal "star" ruined every arrangement by adding
extra lines, kicking off songs himself, not giving the band the rehearsed
instrumental breaks and ruining most of the endings.
Which reminds me of another case. I was hired to do a Doug Kershaw album
by a major label in Nashville. Doug wanted all of us in the recording
band to work a week on the road with him ahead of time to totally get the
new songs down well and have them smooth. We had two rehearsals then hit
the road for a week.
At the end of the week we got to Atlanta to the great Southeastern Music
Hall to do our live album. The big Nashville producer flew in, walked up
to the stage and immediately said, "I don't want any of you guys to do
what you've been playing on the road. I want this to be instantaneous and
just what you're thinking at the moment."
Needless to say, if any of you now own this album, it was a ridiculous
fiasco, a musical disaster, a total waste of time and money for everybody
concerned. Hard to believe that this was a famous Nashville producer, but
then again, he's not the first producer to ever single-handedly ruin a
recording session and an artist's career.
And then there was the Porter Wagoner all girl band that was commissioned
to back Ray Price up on the Nashville Now television show. All the girls
were great players, but whoever made the choice for lead guitar to kick
off "Way To Survive" and the piano to do the turnaround should have been
thrown totally out of the business. You don't arrange two rhythm
instruments to play lead and leave the lead instruments, in this case
fiddle and steel, to play rhythm behind the guitar and piano.
If the vocalist wants to rehearse at his or her house and wants to set the
PA setup for the voice, the rehearsal isn't going to work, as they are
setting up the PA to hear themselves. Rehearsals should be done with a
minimum of volume from everybody, quietly with a lot of verbal
communication and a lot of chart-note taking.
Remember, a rehearsal is not a jam session or a sound check. When you
leave, you need to feel that you know a lot more than you did when you
came. Listen to each other. Every band member should get into what every
other band member is doing. Mutual respect here wouldn't hurt a thing.
Now the money. A rehearsal should be paid if you are doing it for a star
that will be getting all the glory and the big money themselves in the
future. A rehearsal should not be paid if everyone gets paid equal on the
jobs and not just one person will be getting all the benefit. This means
if you are hired to back up Leeann Rimes for example, you have three days
of rehearsal, no time on camera for the TV show, you should get paid for
the rehearsal. However, if you get the intro, the turnaround, on camera
and she says your name, the benefit of just being there may be worth more
than the $75 a day you'll get for rehearsal pay.
If you are working the VFW on Saturday night, only playing established
cover tunes and you have a predetermined method of distributing the
intros, fills and turnaround, rehearsals may not even be needed at all,
but the band does need to have some sort of predetermined modus operandi
to be smooth and sound professional. If you need to learn eight new
songs, back to the rehearsal. If it's a band effort, no one needs to get
paid. If you're backing a star, you do.
As you can see, rehearsals are not to be taken lightly. The issues are
pay, what you want to accomplish and how to rehearsal to accomplish a
better end product.

Howdy Janne here's a report
from Nashville, TN.
Hotter than usual in Nashville - Saturday 060527
Left a boring Stockholm last Thursday... Took the 08.15 Finnair
flight from ARN to Manchester, where the big American Airlines
plane was waiting.... had a pleasant flight to Chicago... could sleep
a lot and they served excellent meals as usual... first a nice steak
lunch and just before arrival... pizza, just as usual...
Lot of people arriving at the same time.... all lines were filled at
the Homeland Security check points.... however it didn't take
too long to get the papers settled and the index fingers photographed..
Took a small plane to Nashville.... unfortunately the ground control
weren't
so effective this day... we had to spend a lot of time taxing around the
airport... sometimes 22 planes ahead of us and then silence for 45 minutes
etc... However, 2 hours delayed, the trip to BNA was really pleasant...
lots of fantastic clouds, since there had been thunderstorms... a little
jumpy at times but still nice... touched ground in Nashville about
19.37...
the suitcases were intact this time and in almost no time I was at my
Midway motel on Murfreesboro road. This time Bob welcomed me and he
had installed new carpets in the room, so now it didn't have the old
smell,
but fresher than ever... Spent the evening resting and listening to
Country radio or watching CMT or GAC on TV. Drifted off to sleep around
24.00 after some coffee and cake.... never miss that... homebaked as
usual!
Friday I spent visiting with some friends, had my regular Arby's meal this
time
it's possible to select 5 items for $5,95.... so I had 3 Arby melts and
curly fries,
and topped it off with mozzarella sticks.... had to save some melts for
later..
was really filled up... picked up some records, some for as low as 25
cents...
they had a flea... Spent the evening sorting things out, and listening to
WSM
Grand Ole Opry, they paid tribute to Billy & Betty Walker & Co. with a
minute
of silence... otherwise the show was just as usual... noticed that Bill
Anderson
sang a duet with Jean Shepard... "Dear John Letter" where Bill forgot the
words,
so even Whispering Bill is gettin' older... The rest of the evening I
spent looking
at CMT or GAC... heard from a wellinformed source that the old Ohio boy,
and
harmony singer, Darrell McCall is moving back to central Texas... probably
giving up
Nashville for good this time... Hot, during the day, up to 93 F and that
would be
more than +31 C.... sunny and warm... too hot for me... and probably for
Chesnutt too...
Today, Saturday, I went to the Nashville flea market, and met some
dealers, and
found some cd's.. not so much people there as there is a Memorial Day on
monday
so they are celebratin' their war heroes... for 3 days and spending time
outdoors..
Will probably have my Arby's soon and listen to Opry tonight, I'll round
it off with
Rhonda Vincent at the Midnite Jamboree... she has a new album out "All
American
Bluegrass Girl" where Dolly is guesting... checkout:

nd
ETrecordshop.com a nice site for weather prognosis etc is
www.weather.com you
just enter the US postcode and a 10 day forecast can be displayed... seems
everybody
is thinking about the CMA Music Fest starting on June 8th..
Will be back later on with more reports.../ Hank

countryfestivaler. Banden är Tennessee Five och Country Minstrels! Man
Tennessee Five = 0
bokningar
Country Minstrels =
10 juni Valsverket, Degerfors (Tack Hasse Andersson).
Andra band = fyll i
sjungandet.
Som jag förstår har
följande countryfestivaler upphört fr o m i år:
Lane Loge
Duved
Sveriges countrymusikklubbar bör ta upp i sina program i höst.
