Tack alla
som sänt kort eller ringt och gratulerat mig på födelsedagen. Uffe Edefuhr
ringde mig från Aberdeen i Skottland. Om man ändå kunde skickat en riktig
”stout” genom luren när han ändå var i landet med världens bästa pubar.
Jag har själv passerat Aberdeen vid några tillfällen då jag varit på väg
uppåt i detta fantastiska Skottland.
Jag
pratade med Hasse Rosén (gitarristen) för någon vecka sedan och han
berättade att han dagen efter tillsammans med hustrun Inger skulle åka
till Chicago. Därifrån skulle de i tre dagar åka tåg med Amtrak över en
mängd stater och slutligen hamna i San Francisco, hyra en bil och åka runt
lite i Kalifornien. Vilket äventyr! Hoppas de inte hamnat mitt i de
brinnande delarna av staten!
Mina goda
vänner Hillfillies har när detta skrivs åkt till Holland för att där tävla
i en bluegrasstävling. Lycka till tjejer + kille!
Nu har
jag hunnit lyssna på CDn med Vern Stovall som Rune Krongårdh sände mig.
Vilken fantastisk musik i stil med gamla fina Johnny Paycheck på Little
Darlin´ Records. Även här är det Lloyd Green som är i högform på en hel
del låtar. En platta ni måste ha om ni gillar gammal fin traditionell

SCMC:s lokal på Östgötagatan 19, Stockholm, lördagen den 24 maj 2008
mellan klockan 16.00 och 21.00.
Det
kommer endast att finnas lite chips och snacks, så vill du ha något att
dricka och/eller äta får du ta med det själv. Självklart finns det
”förning” åt jubilaren.
Lokalen är inte så stor det är därför det ör öppet hus och inte fest. För

var det dags för den årliga födelsedagen GRATTIS på ?? dagen. I dagarna
för 35 år sedan fick Lloyd Green sin första Sho_Bud med "bara" 10
strängar, Den nya standarden, Gitarrerna blev lättare, men inte spelandet
för det.

strängar så menar du Sho-Buds modell Lloyd Green (LDG) som var en ”padded”
dubbelsteel men med bara en hals (E9th). Vanliga tiosträngade steelar kom
redan i slutet av femtiotalet, så även dubbelhalsade med tio strängar
vardera. JL.

Jim
Hager, 66, one half of the Hagers duo, died Thursday after an apparent
heart attack.
With his twin brother Jon, Jim Hager rose to national fame in 1969 when
they joined the cast of a new variety show featuring country-music and a
satirical take on country living.
HEE HAW
went on to become a top-rated syndicated program.
And, when the Hager brothers left it in 1988, they were the recipients of
more fan mail than any other cast members in the show’s history, said Adam
Dread, a family friend and attorney.
The men fans saw on TV — constantly joking and singing — were the same
with people who knew and loved them, Dread said. They found humor in
everyday life.
“Jim, really both of them were just always fooling around, always
laughing, always saying something to make you laugh,” said Dread. “Jim was
so funny but also so sincere.”
Jon Hager
could not be reached for comment late Thursday. But friends of the Hager
brothers said Jim’s loss would be deeply felt.
“When you know someone as long as I knew him, you get to know the soul of
the man,” said LuLu Roman, a long time HEE HAW cast member who has known
the brothers for nearly 30 years.
And he was a good soul that will be dearly, dearly missed.”
Hager was found collapsed in the parking lot of the Frothy Monkey
coffeehouse, said Dread. He was pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University
Medical Center around 6 p.m., said Bill Snyder, a Vanderbilt spokesman.

Jag har
nu hunnit prova min Roland Space Echo RE-201 som Bobbe Seymour skrev om
för någon månad sedan. Har man ingen Peavey Pro-Fex II så är det här
definitivt ett alternativ. Använder man den sparsamt (som man bör göra med
alla effekter) så är den här mycket bra.

som bor i Stockholm har just köpt sig en pedal steel och tänker satsa
stenhårt. Kul! Vi behöver fler unga tjejer inom vår lilla pedalkrets! En
del av oss börjar bli gamla och gaggiga och behöver få lite nytt blod i

Förra lördagen var det Dollykväll på TV. Först
kommer ingenting och ingenting av countrymusik i åratal och sedan helt
plötsligt en hel kväll på en gång. Jag fattar inte något av den politiken?
Men å andra sidan så var filmen om Dollys fans inte mycket att se då de
var heltokiga och fanatiker i allra högsta grad. Hur man kan intressera
sig för endast en artist och stänga ute alla andra är högst märkligt.
Varför sätta sådana skygglappar på sig själv? Några liknande fans finns
även i Sverige.
Konserten med Dolly var kanske en av hennes bättre
under senare årtiondet och jag är nästan säker på att inga kommande blir
bättre än så. Hon har ju varit ute och cyklat med rena popen ibland men
här var det härlig bluegrass för nästan hela slanten. Många låtar var
tagna från hennes bluegrassplattor. Bra tycker jag! Musikanterna som
spelade var följande: Gary Davis, banjo – Richard Dennison, harmony,
guitar och keybord – Randy Kors, harmony, dobro – Jim Mattingby, fiddle –
Jay Weaver, bas – Brent Truett, mandolin – Kent Wells, harmony, guitar –
Steve Turner, drums. Konserten spelades in 2003.
Så här skrev jag på det svenska steelforumet i
veckan angående Lucky Oceans LP Lucky Steels The Wheel:
Jag vill
gärna förtydliga Ulrics ord om Lucky Oceans och berätta att plattan
inkluderar gruppen Asleep At The Wheel då de flesta medlemmar därifrån är
med. Extramusikant är Johnny Gimble. Lucky själv var medlem av Asleep at
the Wheel under lång tid men avlöstes sedan av Wally Murphy från St. Louis
och under senare år har Cindy Cashdollar och Jim Murphy spelat steel. Den
sistnämnde spelar också saxofon. Jag har sett Asleep at the Wheel ett
flertal gånger "live" och det är alltid en upplevelse med Ray Benson som
ledare och sångare. Western Swing av absolut världsklass. De kommer
förresten till Frankrike i sommar!

Country music legend Eddy Arnold dead at 89

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - Eddy Arnold, country music's "Tennessee
Plowboy" whose rendition of "Make the World Go Away" was an international
hit in the 1960s, died on Thursday at age 89 in Nashville after a lengthy
illness.
His death
was announced by his biographer, Don Cusi.
Rising
from a poverty-stricken childhood in Henderson, Tennessee, Arnold
connected with the Pee Wee King Band as a singer and went on to a career
in which he was named to the Country Music Hall of Fame and received the
County Music Association's first entertainer of the year award.
He won
many other awards as he moved from pure country into pop-oriented
arrangements that attracted a wider audience. In addition to "Make the
World Go Away" he scored 16 other consecutive hits in the 1960s. His
concerts sold out in New York's Carnegie Hall and he performed in
Hollywood's Coconut Grove and top clubs in Las Vegas.
Before
his retirement from active singing, he released a new RCA album, "After
All These Years," in 2005.
Arnold
starred on the Grand Ole Opry in 1943, signed with RCA the following year
but did not have a hit until 1946 with "That's How Much I Love You."
Coming
under the management of Col. Tom Parker, Elvis Presley's manager, Arnold
quickly scored a string of hits and graduated from radio to television.
Many in
the country music industry disapproved of his merging country and pop, but
with his smooth baritone he quickly gained the reputation of being
country's version of Bing Crosby. He sold more than 85 million records
and had 147 songs hit the charts.
Among
others, his hit singles include "Cattle Call," "Just Call Me Lonesome,"
"After Loving You," "I Want to Go With You" and "Tennessee Stud."
Arnold's
wife, Sally, died earlier this year.

fellow players,
You know
how you get that good warm fuzzy feeling when you see a great old friend
that you haven’t seen in a long time, someone you bonded with many years
before and suddenly, there they are and you see them when you expect it
the least. This is what being a member of a steel guitar club can do for
your mind. You’ll run across people that have exactly the same love that
you have, that think like you do and share many of the same friends you
share.
Attending
our local Nashville Steel Guitar club meeting last night, I got this
feeling many times. It seems like these meetings are the best way to see
some of my dearest old friends anymore.
Many of
you have asked about several of these people. For instance, the steel
guitar player that I saw when I first walked in, Larry Sasser. He is
feeling and looking great and will be doing some steel guitar shows
himself. Other folks I saw and talked with whose happiness and health I
can vouch for are Billy Robinson, Mike “Cookie” Jones, Jean Hughey, Jim
Vest, Howard White, Drew Ritzel, Smiley Roberts, Jeff Surrat, Carco Clave,
John Bechtel, Phyllis Strunk (Conway Twitty’s former business manager) and
the beautiful Tibell, widow of the great Minnesota Fats.
Camaraderie amongst steel players is a powerful love we have in common.
I’m
excited to see a good friend do some serious teaching on YouTube. His
name is Mickey Adams. He is a person who loves steel guitar enough to
share his love and knowledge. He has my support totally. I urge you to
give him yours if you are in a learning mode.
About
styles, in 1950, to be an accepted country steel player, you needed to be
a Jerry Byrd style steeler. Most fell short, but the style was set. In
1953, an innovative player named Bud Isaacs found a way of going from a
tonic chord to a sub-dominant using a mechanically linked pedal on the
guitar. We still play, live and study these two styles today, C6th and
E9th.
However,
we have refined and advanced these tunings and the styles of playing they
dictate. Hundreds of folks as me every week “Why two necks?”. I usually
give them a silly answer, but the truth is it greatly broadens out the
styles you can play and play them easily. I tell many folks they just
have half a guitar if they only have a one neck steel.
Do you
really only want to play just only one style? It’s ok if you do, but
study that one tuning well or you could get pretty stale sounding on a
five hour dance or club job regardless of your repertoire of licks. Sure
Lloyd Green only plays one neck and only one style, but his playing only
had one purpose, country recording sessions.
Some
people start off with one neck and then graduate to two. Very few people
ever go the other way.
Nothing I
have said here is written in stone, but are just opinions offered to keep
you from sounding exactly the same every time you play. Learn to play
several different styles because undoubtedly you are going to be exposed
to several different circumstances in your playing career that will
require you to play different ways. Keep an open mind, learn everything
you can from everybody. The happiness you achieve will be your own.
I used to
be indecisive but now I’m just not sure. Remember, this is not an optical
illusion. It just looks like one. Is it my imagination or do Buffalo
wings taste like chicken?
Now a
little bit of exciting news that ties into what I’ve just said. We have a
new instruction book with DVD from Doug Jernigan that teaches how to get a
C6th sound from an E9th tuning. This should be a real God-send to you
player that want to broaden your E9th capabilities without going to the
expense of purchasing a double neck guitar.
People we
have sold this teaching method to have raved about how good and easy it
is. I only wish things like this had been available when I was learning
to play, but that was before electricity!
The
interesting thing about this teaching course is Doug beat me to it! For
the last year or so I have wanted to put this course out myself, but I’m
glad it fell into such capable hands as Doug is one of the greatest
premier players of all time. I’m sure I could learn something myself from
this book and DVD.
The man
who single-handedly invented smooth country music has left us. Mr. Eddy
Arnold has passed away one week shy of his 90th birthday. At the height
of his career, there were times when he owned half of the top ten. His
legacy should not be forgotten.

Så har det redan blivit söndag igen! Under
veckan som gått har jag kollat lite på You Tube och vad som finns där. Förutom
superbra inslag som de med Emmons, Jernigan, Seymour m fl. så finns en hel del
skräp och nu pratar jag bara om de med pedal steelinslag. Varför vill t ex
svenska nybörjare lägga ut sina eländiga inspelningar på You Tube för att visa
upp sin ofärdighet? Någon måtta av självkritik bör finnas hos varje musikant
eller är de i verkligheten så tondöva att de inte hör skillnad på sig själva
eller t ex Tom Brumley?
Countryfest på Ulvsättra i Kallhäll var det
förra lördagen. Enligt Tommy Löfgren så blev det en mycket trevlig dag med
knallemarknad, tjur (mekanisk alltså) och aktiviteter. Mycket folk under dagen
men kanske lite för få på kvällen då musikunderhållningen började. Men ni som
missade tillställningen kan åka dit igen den 14/6, 16/8 och 6/9. Gå in på

Bengt Olander sände mig den tråkiga nyheten om
Kalle Sändare och jag vill gärna att ni läser nedanstående rader. Det handlar
inte om countrymusik men om en människa som roat oss alla genom åren. JL.
Kära vänner!
Ni som känner mig väl vet att
Kalle Sändare har skänkt mig många glada skratt genom åren. Han har också
otvivelaktigt hjälpt mig att utveckla min känsla för det svenska språket. Sist
men inte minst har han hjälpt mig att snabbt komma nära likasinnade människor.
Älskar man Kalle Sändare och möter en annan person som gör det är genast alla
eventuella murar rivna.
Det var med stor sorg som jag
i går kväll tog emot budskapet att Kalle Sändare lämnat oss. Men han gjorde
det med flaggan i topp. Detta kunde ske tack vare hedersmannen Per Bergman som
för några år sedan ryckte in och började arbeta för att Kalle skulle få en
dräglig tillvaro sina sista dagar – och ny uppmärksamhet för hans underbara
sätt att roa människor.
Så fort jag för något år
sedan fick reda på att det fanns en vänförening till Kalle (Gris och
Skridskoföreningen, förkortad GOSF), gick jag med. Det var något av det bästa
jag gjort. Bland annat för att vi alla genom föreningen därmed bidrog lite
till att, under Per Bergmans ledning, i tid göra livet roligare för en
människa som befann sig i livets skymning.
Nästan exakt ett dygn innan
Kalle avled var Per och jag uppe på avdelning 51 på Södersjukhuset och besökte

jag just skrev till Kerstin Nilsson efter att hon skrivit en oerhört fin
artikel till Kalles minne i dagens AFTONBLADET.

TO BE HONORED BY 43rd ANNUAL ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS WITH CLIFFIE
STONE PIONEER AWARD
NASHVILLE, TN – The Academy of Country Music will honor the late Conway Twitty
with the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award during the non televised portion of the
43rd ANNUAL ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS.
The ceremony, which honors country music’s top talent as well as the
industry’s hottest emerging talent, will be broadcast LIVE from MGM GRAND in
Las Vegas on Sunday, May 18th, 2008 at 8:00 PM ET/PT on the CBS Television
Network.
In 1970,
Conway Twitty set the
astonishing pace for the decade with “Hello Darlin’” one of the most
recognizable singles in country music history. He later teamed with Loretta
Lynn and the Academy of Country Music awarded their partnership with four
trophies for Top Vocal Group in 1971, 1974-1976. In 1975, he won two more
Awards for Album of the Year and Top Male Vocalist. Before he died in 1993,
Twitty had scored a record breaking 55 number one hits, either as a solo
artist or with his close friend Loretta Lynn.
“To the world, Conway Twitty was a country music superstar, a legend, but, to
us, he was our Dad. We are so very proud of this honor that has been bestowed
upon him. He certainly was a pioneer in both rock-n-roll and country music
and well deserving of this award. We are very proud of all he achieved in his
musical career, but, we are even more proud of the kind, loving and gentle man
he was to everyone he ever met,” says Joni Twitty on behalf of Conway Twitty
United.
Brenda Lee,
The Oak Ridge Boys, and
Porter Wagoner have
alsobeen chosen to receive the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award honoring
individuals who are pioneers in the country music genre. Past recipients of

players,
How many
times have you seen somebody on television with a big record contract and you
said to yourself, “I wonder how she got a record deal?” Or some guy 20 years
old with a black hat that barely knows how to hold a microphone. You say to
yourself, “We’ve got twenty people here in our hometown that sing better than
that!”
Well friends,
I’m here to tell you, 98% of the time, it has very little to do with their
talent. You will continue to see questionable talent and wonder why some of
the greatest singers you’ve ever heard in your life can’t get to first base.
When I had my
recording studios on music row, I had several what I call, great singers and
entertainers come by to do demo sessions to pitch to the labels. Most of them
had a whole lot more talent than they did intelligence. I’d do an incredible
session on them, go to one of my friends at a major label, get the label all
excited, go back to the wannabe star, if I could find them, and they’d say
something like, “Oh, I don’t know. I think I’m gonna go with somebody else.”
Or “If they really think I’m good, they’ll buy me a nice car, a bus to tour
in, pay for everything themselves and wait on me hand and foot.”
Most of these
wannabees have stardom right at the tips of their fingers, but manage to be
their own worst enemy and let the whole thing slip away. I have never found
one of these folks that even knows what a producer is. Some of these
wannabees that I really believed in and wanted to pitch to major labels or
did, had no idea of what wheels were turning around them, what was going on
for them and how close they may have been to that magic deal they think they
wanted so bad.
I met one
girl from Michigan that was beautiful and had great talent, had the session
scheduled and two major A&R people from major labels going to come by the
session the following day to meet her in person. She called me the night
before on my cellphone, drunk from a local Nashville nightclub and said, “I’m
not gonna record with you. I just met somebody here in the club that offered
me a lot better deal than you did.”
My reply was,
“Who could that be?”
When she told
me, I recognized the name as being one of the typical Nashville rip-off
producers that was only after her money and would soon throw her away. Five
months later, I got a return call from her. She was crying and telling me how
horrible her session was with this so-called producer, how he had taken her
money for 1000 CDs, made her phony promises of making her a star in Europe and
overall just taken her to the cleaners.
This is a
typical story that happens many times and is why you probably have young
singers in your hometown that are just as good as those you see on the Opry
and on television. Remember, there’s an awful lot more to success than having
talent.
Many of you
are great steel guitar players but would never give up your good day job to
pursue playing steel professionally, but that doesn’t keep you from loving it
even more than a lot of the pros that you see on the Opry or television.
Just
remember, making the right decisions in life are only good decisions if they
make you happy. And rich and prosperous doesn’t hurt! And remember also that
when you see someone on the Opry or on television, they are there because of
their ability to make good decisions as much as anything else.
I would like
to send my condolescenes to the family of the legendard Eddy Arnold who for
many years was country music’s biggest star, holding more top ten record
positions that any country music singer in history.
Dottie Rambo,
definitely the queen of Gospel music, was killed in a horrific tour bus crash
this past week while on tour. The entire band and traveling companions were
all seriously injured and we should pray for all them. Dottie was as much a
great name in Gospel music as Eddy Arnold was to country music. These artists
will be missed by all who ever heard or knew them.

STORY
BEHIND THE SONG
Charley
Pride's 1969 number one, "All
I Have To Offer You Is Me,"
was his first record to top the country
music charts.
He came close a year earlier when his single, "The Easy Part's Over," topped
out at
number two.
"All I Have To Offer You Is Me" was his first time to record a song written by
A. L.
"Doodle" Owens and Dallas Frazier.
His previous nine single
releases had been written by another songwriting team,
Jerry Foster and Bill Rice or producer/writer Jack
Clement.
The idea for "All I Have To Offer You Is e" came from a conversation betweens
Owens and Frazier, while driving. The songwriting duo had many conversations
during, many such drives and the results were many more hit songs!
There were four record producers listed on the record—Felton Jarvis, Jack
Clement, Chet Atkins and Bob Ferguson.
These guys were the cream of the crop in the production of country
records during that time. While Jack Clement was the
only one of the four to actually even be
in the studio while Pride was recording the song, the listing of all four
producers on the record label was part of RCA Records
efforts to built credibility for Pride's talent before country music
radio stations discovered the color
of his skin.
According to Charley, "Things were different back then."
And the artists credits on his first five record releases listed him as
"Country
Charley Pride."
"All I Have To Offer You Is Me" hit the country charts June 21st,
1969 abd nine weeks later, was in the number one spot.
It was on the charts for 16 weeks.

Vad
gäller YouTube så är den som både webben i övrigt och faktiskt i någon mån
livet självt - full av både skräp och diamanter. Var och en får sovra
själv, för det gör ingen annan åt en. Tuben är totalt demokratisk i den
bemärkelsen att vem som helst kan lägga ut (nästan) vad som helst där, och
det är inget förbud på att göra bort sig. Samma sak som i affärer - det
finns inget förbud på att göra dåliga affärer om man nu anser sig ha råd
med det.
Att
se och höra vad olika pickers gör är oftast intressant (och ibland litet
pinsamt), men jag är för egen del glatt överraskad över hur många riktigt
bra pickers det finns, som jag inte hade en aaaaning om innan tuben kom.
Fast det är sant - visst ligger de flesta svenskar långt efter
genomsnittsamerikanerna i spelförmåga, men det är ändå kul att se och höra
vad folk åstadkommer, även om det inte alltid är så bra. Nästan alla lär
sig med tiden någon liten specialitet som är bra och som kan inspirera
andra.
Så
jag skulle tvärtom vilja uppmana folk att lägga ut mer på tuben. Det är de
som vågar satsa och inte låter sig hämmas av jantebon inom sig som
utvecklas snabbast och mest i förhållande till sina talanger. De som inte
vågar satsa och riskera att göra bort sig ibland utvecklar heller aldrig
sina talanger ordentligt. Det är en inbyggd förbannelse att begåvade
människor ofta är så förbannat självkritiska, och den tendensen är enbart
destruktiv och borde bekämpas. Bertrand Russel sa någon gång att ett av
vår tids största problem är just att de dumma är så säkra på sin sak och
de kloka så fulla av tvivel.

Det är
självklart att ALLA har rätt att lägga ut sin outhärdliga musik på nätet.
Jag bara undrade hur det stod till med intelligensen och musikaliteten?
Varför vill man skämma ut sig själv med sopiga bidrag till t ex You Tube?
Valfritt så klart, men någon självkritik bör man ändå ha för sin egen
skull. Det här gäller absolut inte bara svenska pickers, det var bara ett
exempel jag nämnde. Som jag tidigare skrivit så är mängden av amerikanska
steelpickers ungefär 33 gånger så många - kanske ännu fler - och därmed
finns det då rimligtvis 33 skitdåliga musikanter på 1 enda svensk sådan.
Dessa kan man stundtals betrakta på You Tube.
Under
mina ca 10 år som DJ på Radio Lidingö och Radio Viking så fick jag (och
får fortfarande) massor av knäppa inspelningar från folk som vill bli
stjärnor, ungefär som många av de tokar som söker till ”Idol”. En del är
så hemska att man undrar varför ”artisten” inte själv upptäcker att det
låter fördj-t! En gåta för mig och då ska man veta att jag inte är direkt
överkänslig mot folk som försöker. Allt måste ha sin början någonstans och
som lärare i pedal steel har jag hört det mesta. Men varför göra
inspelningar då man är långt ifrån färdig från nybörjarstadiet och som man
sedan lägger ut eller spelar upp för andra. Det är just det jag hakat upp
mig på! Spela då hellre upp det för mamma eller pappa, de tycker ALLTID
att du är bäst!

Träskrock, Cajun och Zydeco med Bayou
Bayou,
spelar musiken från träskmarkerna i Louisiana. traditionell Cajun, och
Zydeco, nyskriven och vintage-baserad 40-talsrock och country, där
cajun-dragspelet, fiolen, tvättbrädan, ståbasen och lap-steelen står i
centrum. Bayou bildades för några år sedan av medlemmar från
Uppsala-bandet Boiling Bayou och Stockholms-bandet Cajun Hurricane, som
spelat denna musik i upp till 20 år. Boiling Bayou blev 2006 nominerade
som bästa utländska band i the Cajun French Music Awards i Lafayette,
Louisiana.
Turnerat i USA-södern
Tidigare har medlemmarna hunnit med flera USA-turnéer i djupaste
Louisiana-södern, nu senast i början av Maj, då ett par av bandets
medlemmar var inbjudna att spela i New Orleans, den klassika radio och
tv showen ”Rendezvous des Cajuns” från Liberty Theatre i Eunice, samt
Crawfish-festivalen i Breaux Bridge, strax öster om Lafayette i djupaste
swamp-södern.
Där är
det är fantastiskt att möta publik och andra musiker på orter som Mamou,
Breaux Bridge och i Lafayette, säger bandets Christer Åberg. De känner ju
inte så mycket till Sverige, annat än att vi är den största importören av
deras kräftor. Men när vi spelar schottis med vår rockabilly-flauvor, så
är de övertygande om att det är two-step. Och de dansar two-step och
jittebugg till det.
Han
berättar att de blivit lite av en ambassadörer för ett litet land
”overseas” och att folk blir väldigt intresserade när de förstår att
Sweden, där är det kräftor, dragspel som gäller och lika mycket party som
de själva har, även om de tycker att svenskarna är konstiga som äter
kräftorna kalla, kryddade med dill.
Vi har
under det senaste året spelat på ett antal festivaler, bland annat
Ultimate Country Cruise, Torsåkers Bluegrassfestival, Cajunfestivalen i
Köge i Danmark och Hillbilly Night på Mosebacke i Stockholm.
Kommande sommar har Bayou ett antal festival och klubbspelnigar inbokade,
bland annat Carlshamns Countryfestival 31/5, Lida Countryfestival 27/5,
Piteå Dansar och Ler 25/7, Gränna Bluegrassfestival 16/8 samt Stödfestival
för New Orleans i Hammarby Sjöstad, Stockholm 12/10

Tack för hjälpen i sökandet efter en Session 400. Nu hittade vi aldrig en
lämplig modell, utan övergick till en mycket lyckad Plan B: min Fender
Steel King. Redd hade aldrig provat en sådan men var villig att ge den en
chans på vår första spelning i Malmö. Och till allas förvåning passade den
fantastiskt bra till hans spelstil. Såväl Redd, som bandet och folk i
publiken, höjde hans ljud (och inspirerade spel till skyarna). Och ett
flertal rörförstärkarfanatiker fick sig en rejäl överraskning när de
sedermera fick veta att Redds välljudande toner kom från en
transistorförstärkare.
Själv körde jag på min nya "Steel Tzar", en Fender Super Twin Reverb från
tidigt 80-tal ombyggd för att passa till pedalsteel. 180 W av maffig
rörförstärkare med solid botten för min C6:a.

har fått tips om detta nyhetsbrev om country och skulle framöver vilja få
med information om att det ska vara tema Country & Western på Haningedagen
- ett lokalt arrangemang i Haninge kommun som genomförs kring Kulturhuset
och Poseidons torg i Haninge centrum. Det är ett tillfälle för föreningar,
företag , organisationer att visa upp sig, som genomförs varje år och
brukar inramas av ett tema. Detta år är temat Country och Western och det
kommer vara en utomhusscen och musik med countryinriktning under dagen.

How many
of you saw the ACM awards the other night?
It must
have been several of you because I received many disparaging emails about
this country entertainment show. Notice I left the word music out of it.
After all, it’s not about the music. It’s entertainment. Skinny people
jumping around, yelling into a microphone, wearing funny costumes and
generally acting immature and silly.
The
reason I’m complaining about this is not because I think they don’t have a
right to do it. They are definitely making big money in the process.
However, selling it under the guise of music is sort of pushing it out of
bounds to me and I’m sure to everyone that calls themselves a musician.
If they would just let us know it’s about the entertainment, I could stand
the scenario a lot more easily.
I notice
that when they mentioned the award to the steel player of the year, the
television director cut before the name could be announced and went to a
commercial. There are people out here that view at these shows looking
for some decent musical content. It appears the entire country music
industry is leaning hard toward glitz, glamour, stage tricks, funny
lighting and hype to get the non-musical patrons to pay their way through
the front door.
Obviously
there are a lot more people out there that don’t know anything about music
than there are of us musicians that love and care for the quality and
intelligence it takes to be able to learn this craft.
Why am I
perturbed? It’s because this stuff is being sold as music. It’s not
about the music. You could hear much better music on the soundtrack of
CSI, Sanford & Son, The Andy Griffith Show and Sponge Bob Squarepants than
you can music award shows. Actually the entertainment may be better on
these shows I just mentioned.
How many
times has someone asked you after you told them you were a musician, who
do you work with? The more popular the name, the greater they think you
are. This is what I call fame by association or tapping into the singers
fame. To them, it doesn’t matter how good you can play, you are no good
until you have worked with somebody famous.
When I
left my local area home before coming to Nashville, I was just a nobody
non-playing dreamer to the populace in my hometown. I went to Nashville,
went to work with Bobby Bare, played my hometown and suddenly I was a big
star. I didn’t play a bit better with Bobby Bare than I did at the local
VFW at home. It seems as though fame comes with association.
Just
being famous is pretty hollow. Being famous because YOU play well is the
real honor. One thing I really like about the Texas Steel Guitar Hall of
Fame is that they seem to ignore a lot of the entertainment factors and
pick their inductees by how well they played, how long and what they have
done for the steel guitar industry as a whole. This gives this
organization great credibility as I think these factors are much more
important than inducting someone because they accidentally got on one hit
record before never being heard from again.
What does
it take to get a job with somebody famous? Quite often, not much. Being
in the right place at the right time seems to be the most important
factor. Remember, there are also many, many great players that will not
work the road because of family ties or whatever.
Anyway, I
feel that all of you subscribers to this newsletter care about the music.
If you are playing professionally, you have to care about the money. If
you are not a professional musician, but love steel guitar, fiddle, banjo,
lead guitar, then I know you love the music and may be the luckiest of us
all. Thank goodness we can buy CDs, have some satellite radio stations
that are devoted to pure music because the most powerful medium of all,
television, seems to have let us pure country music lovers down. Let’s
hope it’s only temporary.
My new
pure country CD entitled “Tennessee Country” is now in the hands of the
duplicator and is awaiting it’s turn to go through the stamper. Andy
Reiss is playing lead guitar. He is famous for his great band, The Time
Jumpers, that works in Nashville every Monday night with Paul Franklin
being the steel player.
The pure
country rhythm section on this CD is just what a steel fan would want to
listen to with no piano, no fiddle, no horns or string section, just a
drummer playing brushes on a snare, two rhythm guitars and upright bass.
Pure country steel guitar with nothing getting in the way. This is the
purest country, full of licks, out of my 17 CDs that I’ve ever done. It
will be available for sale in about three weeks.
Don’t
forget the big Memorial Day steel guitar show in Tulsa. These are fine
folks and you always have a good time. I won’t be there but it is and
always has been one of my favorites.

Tisdag
morgon var hustrun och jag som vanligt på promenad på morgonkvisten precis
som vi gör varje dag. Vi gick den vanliga vägen förbi Bredäng till
Jakobsbergs Gård och tillbaka. Det tar ungefär en timme. Men den här
gången – till vår förvåning – så stod det två stora elefanter och betade i
gräsmattan ungefär vid Bredängs Camping. Va!?! Hade jag möjligtvis druckit
för mång elefantöl kvällen innan eller…? Men eftersom även hustrun såg
elefanterna så blev jag lugn. Strax därpå dök det betande kameler upp
också! Ja ni tror med all rätt att jag och hustrun fått dilerium eller
något men….. på andra sidan vägen fanns förklaringen. Maximum Cirkus hade
kommit dit under natten och lät alla sina djur beta av det färska gräset.
Vilken härlig början på en dag!
Dessutom
fick jag den senaste Mr Music Country från Göteborg. Vilken höjdare denna
gång, bara superlåtar. Endast en lite udda låt var med och det var
faktiskt Dolly Parton med sin Cracker Jack. En bra låt, bra inspelning för
sin tid, men kändes lite gammalmodig tillsammans med dagsaktuella
toppinspelningar med Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Gretchen Wilson, Keith
McCoy, Van Preston och många fler. Har ni ännu inte prenumererat på Mr
Music Country så gör det snarast.

Onsdag
kväll (samma vecka) den 28 maj var jag på Enskede Värdshus för att bli
underhållen av Svengmans, ni vet bandet det sveeeeeeeenger om! Då jag kom
dit vid 19-tiden var huset fullt av gäster både inne och ute. Fin buffé
fanns att köpa in sig på och förstås allehanda drickbart. Ute i trädgården
stod Svengmans med nyinköpta vita cowboyhattar och det var nästan som om
Bill Monroes ande vakade över det hela. Åtminstone fick vi höra en hel del
av hans uppfinning, nämligen bluegrassmusik.
Utan elförstärkning så blev det givetvis lite tunt ute i
trädgården, men det tog man igen då bandet – och publiken – flyttade ned
till festvåningen. Där blev det bra tryck på musiken med Kjelle Johansson
i högform på banjon och trevligt mellansnack av ”the leader of the pack”
Kenneth Friberg. Sången inklusive stämsång kunde vara lite tydligare på
vissa håll, men det var inget fel på låtval och arrangemang med lite Hank
Williams, Flatt & Scruggs och Monroe förstås! Att sången ljudmässigt blev
svagare än själva kompet berodde mest på att huvudsångaren och stämdito
inte gick tillräckligt nära mickarna. Den här sortens mikrofoner kallas
”close talk” vilket säger det mesta. Men detta är en bagatell eftersom
helheten och stämningen i bandet smittade av sig på publiken och alla
tycktes trivas. Extra festligt blev det då Svengmans Decolletage –
Susanne, Sussie och Rita - kom indansande framför bandet. Även de med
tjusiga vita hattar. En höjdarkväll!

Det var
också kul att träffa några gamla vänner bland publiken. Men var fanns
medlemmarna i Stockholms Country Music Club? Trots deras frånvaro så var
festvåningen i det närmaste fullsatt och Club Svengmans kommer troligtvis
tillbaka redan i september, med gästartister och jam.

here is the first of a series reports:
Monday - 2008-05-26 - Country Fan on his way to Mecca
Booked my on going Nashville trip via
www.travelstart.se they had
a special price on American Airlines I couldn't resist. Arlanda ->
Heathrow -> JFK -> LaGuardia -> Nashville. The price was about
SEK 5400,- which I consider cheap.
To get to Arlanda in Stockholm I use
www.sl.se and
www.flygbussarna.se
together they can help you get to Arlanda almost anytime when flights
are leaving. For "flygbussarna" you can buy a 10-trip-card and save some
if you plan to fly frequently.
However I got to Arlanda by first an SL bus and then changed at Jaerva
Krog to a "flygbuss". Got to Arlanda about 06.00 and flight leaving 07.05.
Smooth check in and I got all boarding cards. Arrived in London ok at new
T5 (Terminal #5) and had to switch thru flight connections to T3. Waited
in the lounge and finally got on board AA105. Smooth ride as ever, nice
meals and arrived on time at JFK. Got my luggage ok and went out to catch
the bus to LaGuardia, cost for this a mere $13. Delivered there smoothly
too,
chatting with an airline pilot living in Nashville...
Checked in again, this time for Nashville... Easy ride again and landed
about
21.17. Waited for my luggage and went to my Midway Motel. Arrived there
around 22.00. Checked in and got settled. Noticed that there had been some
visitors since last time... and that some ants had moved in...
As George W. would have said: "Just stomp them out!" and I did... But I
guess
there are more hiding in their caves...
Spent rest of the evening watching TV and listening to Eddie Stubbs on WSM
radio 650

intimate
evening with Eddie and Dierks Bentley at the Hall of Fame this week. Had
some
nice coffee and cake and called my promo man. Drifted off to sleep late...
Tuesday - 2008-05-27 - Nashville is the roughest...
Woke up early as usual. Spent some time downtown at the library and then
took bus #3 out to Music Row to have an Arby's meal. Was waiting for my
promo
man but he never showed up. Nashville can be rough sometimes!
Back to downtown and boarded after some walking around a bus #12 to visit
with Jeff, other record man. He was working and I browsed for an hour or
so for some new stuff in the cd bins... Returned to Great Escape and said
hello to a friend there. Then it was time to take the bus #15 back to my
Midway Motel, after some food shopping. Was just so shocked, my favorite
store, H.G. Hill's, had closed so I had to find a new one... I did in a
strange way,
since I found a Dollar General Market in a place where there used to be a
Kroger
foodstore earlier. This meant better prices but fewer articles...
Back at my motel it was time to inform the manager about the ants... so
while standing there the phone rang and Dan wanted to come over and
visit some... We had a nice chat and after he left I watched the Opry,
one nice duet with Dawn Sears & Vince Gill "Look At Us" and Dawn also
sang on her own with Time Jumpers... good sound of course. Listened
to Eddie this evening too... filing new stuff on my Mac etc.
Wednesday - 2008-05-28 - 14 years of hard work...
After breakfast i took bus #10 all the way out on Charlotte Avenue. Did
some thriftshopping (like Elizabeth Cook). Found some nice pearl snaps
and T-shirts etc even found a book by Ed McBain for just $2. After this
long day I went back to my Motel and unloaded and took the bus in again
after some sandwiches and nuggets. I stopped at Country Music Hall of Fame
(www.countrymusichalloffame.com)
and notice people waiting in line outside
the building. I was listening to my radio and waiting for the doors to
open
so I could claim my ticket for a seat and to listen to Dierks
Bentley being
interviewed by Eddie Stubbs. As usual Hall of fame donated a kit to all
the
winners. I got front row seat as usual, it pays to wait in line, and had a
ball watching this overnight sensation salute his first "Greatest Hits"
album
being released on Capitol. Even the head of the label was there... 3000
fans has been listed on the insert as co-producers... as they voted for
the songs to be included... 2 new songs and also liver versions of the
hits
will make this volume easy to sell... Dierks (www.dierks.com) got
to Nashville
14 years ago and used to play at Wolfy's. He had an independent album
released in
2001, but that memory cell didn't click for Dierks as he thought it was
1999.
He played 2 songs live and when they had the breaks for ads he met and
greeted the fans. many took pictures and some got autographs. The show
was on for 2 hours between 19-21. But don't cry for missing it it will be
added to the files on WSM's homepage so in a week or so you will be able
to hear him and Eddie talk live on your computer.
Took the bus #15 back to my Midway Motel and just in time to see the last
8 minutes of the Penguins - Red Wings Stanley Cup final. 3-2 Penguins,
but Detroit almost equlized... I bet they will win the cup this year! As
usual
they outshot their opponents 34-24 this time (www.nhl.com).
Listened to Eddie the rest of the evening and stomped them ants, it seems
they are almost everywhere, but I will not give in and use another room.
Warm here now +30.

Here it
is. Summer season is here. There should be more work playing for every
steeler. Private parties, clubs are doing better, road gigs are firing
up, fairs are being booked along with other outside events. Steel guitar
shows also fire up this time of year.
Don’t let
fuel prices govern your life. Don’t turn down gigs because you think they
are too far away. Don’t stay away from great steel guitar shows because
of the price of fuel. Don’t be held hostage by big government, politics
and off-shore suppliers and on-shore refiners. You could always dump the
big V-8 van or pickup truck and get a nice car with a big trunk that gets
twice the mileage. This would be like $4 gasoline only being $2 gasoline.
Don’t let
any of this nonsense keep you from getting a hundred percent out of your
love for steel guitar, music in general and life as you know it. Music is
as “green” a hobby or business as you can have. Don’t cut back on steel.
I got
thousands of emails and everyone of them agreeing with me about last
week’s newsletter on the ACM awards, and while we are on the subject of
the demise of classic country music, I’m also pretty shocked to see the
degradation of other styles of music.
Have you
noticed all the late night talk shows, like Leno, O’Brian, Letterman and
Ferguson all have some kind of band playing the last seven minutes of
their shows? Most of these bands are horrible. Very few are okay. I
recently found some redeeming qualities in Nora Jones, Prince and if I
looked hard, I could probably find another one or two.
Who books
these acts on these late night venues? And do they know nothing about
music? I feel the problem is people don’t know good from bad. They don’t
know actual real music from just noise. Many so called musicians that I
see on television obviously are missing a musical education. Many need to
learn at least enough music to know good from bad. I feel 100% of the
readers of this music know and appreciate good smooth, classic, mature
musical sounds. We all know what’s bad and what irritates us.
I
personally can’t take a lot of so called music that is forced on me like
the synthesized music on news shows, distortion guitar on car ads and
lastly, I quit watching the low budget car shows on television because of
the horrible screaming sound track.
How long
can you watch the weather channels without being driven up the wall?
Possibly
the more you learn and the more music savvy you get over the years, the
more bad music aggravates you. Possibly this bad music only bothers good
musicians.
My father
was a musician on the battleship Indiana in World War II. He tells the
story of three buglers on the ship whose responsibility it was to play
different bugle melodies as signals over the ships intercom such as
Revelie, warnings of attack from enemy forces, time for mess, meaning a
call to eat.
Being one
of the musicians, he didn’t have to get up and start his day at 5 AM as
most of the rest of the crew did. However, two of the buglers on duty
played so well, he could pleasantly sleep right through their morning
awakening call. But the third bugler was so bad in tone, pitch and meter
that nobody could sleep through it. This shows me that even bad musicians
may have their place.
While
working the road out of Nashville many years ago with Jim and Jesse and
the Virginia Boys, we had just loaded up on the bus, left town and were
worming out way through the back roads of Kentucky when we approached a
very long and very narrow suspension bridge. As we started to cross it at
55 MPH, sure enough over the top rise in the center of it, here comes an
10 foot wide house trailer who was also going about 55.
Jesse was
driving the bus. I said, “Jesse, there isn’t room for both of us.”
Jesse’s
reply was, “Well, he’s not gonna stop and I don’t have anywhere to go but
over the side and I’m not doing that.”
As the
vehicles came closer and closer together, myself and our band got as far
to the right side of our bus as we could in anticipation of us losing the
left side of the bus. The driver towing the 10x60 foot mobile home got as
close as possible to the railings as he could and we did the same on our
side and as we met, the rearview mirrors of his tow truck and our bus
smashed together with glass flying everywhere but with very little more
damage, we passed each other and continued on our journey.
I guess
the moral of this story is, if you have a big immovable object coming at
you in your life, do your best to get around it and continue on because
your playing will make it okay in the end. This turned out to be a great
tour that I’ll never forget, with one of the nicest country bluegrass
bands that I’ve ever known. Remember, all these touring groups are not
just in danger because of high fuel prices, but the travel itself is
dangerous.
Waylon
Jennings, early in his career, lost two band members in a bus accident.
Claude Gray lost a bass player in a car wreck while traveling to a job.
We lost a great singer, Billy Walker and his band in a van accident coming
from a job. Gloria Esteban had a horrible back injury in a bus crash.
Charlie Pride lost the entire rudder and vertical stabilizer on his
airplane due to a mid-air collision.
While
traveling with Lynn Anderson, I myself had a couple of close calls in
aircraft, one of which was losing an engine in a DC3 coming out of Kansas
City. Another in a LearJet with the entire band leaving Lake Tahoe in a
snow storm and of course, the ever tragic story of Reba losing her band.
Jean
Shepard, while traveling with Ernest Tubb forty years ago, hit a car head
on that was going the wrong way on an exit ramp. Jean was thrown from the
middle of the bus almost totally out of the windshield and broke both
legs. The car driver was killed.
And of
course, we just lost the great Dottie Rambo in a bus accident two weeks
ago.
So
remember, these guys that are working the road are not only in constant
danger of not being paid, but just the danger of travel, no matter how
should warrant them some additional praise and admiration.
We do
complete restorations down to minor repairs, clean ups and setups on all
steel guitars, but we need the guitar in here to do these things. We are
not going to spend an hour on the phone telling folks how to do this at
home. Every repair is different. Every restoration is different. We
need to see the guitar in order to make the right decisions on what it
takes to make it useful for it’s purpose.
There is nothing we can’t do. We even build guitars
totally from the ground up. Many of you have know that for a long time,
but some of you don’t. Your guitars are totally insured when they are
under our roof and they’ll only be worked on by the finest professionals
in the industry. If you have a problem with your guitar or want your
guitar to be a lot better than it is, let us know and get it to us. Here’s
