Hello fellow players,
Many people have asked me if they can get any work playing steel guitar if they come to Nashville. My reply is there is plenty of work here for the right kind of person. Notice I didn’t say for the right kind of player. How you play is secondary to getting a job and holding it.
I am in the unique position of seeing and meeting almost everybody that is making the move to Nashville to start a career playing music in this town. I see all different kinds of people come in. Most of them play pretty much alike. Whiny E9th to fast E9th. This is what most stars and bandleaders expect to hear when you are hired. As long as you know when to fill, how to fill, can do an intro or instrumental break in the song and copy a record, you’re halfway there.
Notice I said halfway there. The most important thing is your personality. Honestly, physical appearance will naturally make somewhat of a difference. You need to look like a steel player. Sort of take an average of all the other steel players that you know that are working and this will be a good reference.
When you come to town and see your competition which are players like Tommy White, Stu Basore, Ron Elliott and Mike Johnson, you’ll notice they’ll be wearing clean shirts, sometimes sport coat or sport jacket. Nothing that is outlandish. They’re not dressed like the Marlboro Man or Rupaul.
When you’re up for a job that will be ongoing like a permanent television show or a permanent road gig, you will be talked to by the star and the bandleader and your personality will be one of the main reasons you are hired or rejected. If you’re quick with a smile, a healthy handshake and not overbearing in anyway and have a personality that is pretty consistent and everybody likes you, it will mean much more than being a great player.
Remember, when you’re playing on that stage on a road job you may only be playing for a total of ten minutes, however when you’re off the stage, you’re with all the guys solid for the rest of the day or week or month. Not rubbing anybody the wrong way or putting pressure on anybody for any reason will go a long way to keeping you on the band for a good while.
Remember Faron Young’s drummer worked with him for 26 years. Conway’s drummer worked with him for 23 years and John Hughey, the steel player, for well over 20 years. Most of us in the world of steel guitar are aware of the great personality that John Hughey had.
Mike Jones worked with Barbara Mandrell for well over 20 years and then it was Ben Keith who worked with Neil Young for over 40 years. Ben was a long way from being a paramount hotshot steel player, but he was always there with a smile on was a great employee overall.
When you are trying out for a job, try to impress upon the person hiring that you’re going to be a great guy to have around for many years. It won’t take but a second to show them how you play, but it will take a while to prove that you’re the kind of person that they want to have around and eating hamburgers with from coast to coast.
This may sound a little ridiculous to a new player coming to Nashville, but I’ve seen many come and go and those that come here and stay here have a lot more going for them than how well they can play an intro or turn around.
So many names flash through my mind when I think of those who have come and gone. But if this is what you want to do, believe me, do your best to be a well rounded musician and employee and try real hard to fit in with the organization that you’re going to be working with.
We’ve all heard about the great musician who is standing on the corner, broke in downtown Nashville and there is a certain amount of truth that you can believe me when I tell you, if they’re standing on the corner broke, they probably should be. There’s a lot of work for the right people in Nashville. If you want to try to be one of the right people, if you play pretty well, you can definitely be one of the members of Musician’s Union 247 very easily.
I remember a truly great musician moving to Nashville from the northeast many years ago. Everybody was extremely impressed with his playing, but he managed to offend everyone on the recording session every time he worked. The producers were impressed with his playing, but he always said the wrong things to the wrong people.
I remember he walked up to drummer D.J. Fontana and said, “What can I do and who should I play like to get more work?”
D.J. looked at him and said, “Look around in the studio here and pick out somebody that you like and act just like him. That will get you more work than who you play like.”
I managed to overhear this brilliant bit of advice and had to walk off smiling to myself.
There he was. A great musician that had technically gotten into sessions and had it made, but yet he blew it and lost everything he had built up by not fitting in with his personality. I’m sure many of you know steel players that were incredible but just couldn’t quite get the ball rolling in Nashville. I’m sure it’s the same in New York and Los Angeles or wherever.
You might call it politics, but when you back up and look at any big corporation, any big company, you will see that those that get along, go forward and rise up through the ranks are those that really don’t step on any toes.
I myself, left a lot to be desired through my studio days as far as being political goes. I was invited to join the musicians bowling team but wouldn’t do it. I was invited out to dinner many times with key players and session leaders. Seldom did I ever go.
If I were going to start over again in Nashville, Tennessee as a professional player, there are a lot of things I would do differently. But thank God, I have this company and can look back at where I have been and can see the mistakes I’ve made and can help educate others not to do some of the things that I have done.
I see some new players in town today who play incredibly well and aren’t really getting where I feel they should be. And then I’m seeing two or three players that are doing sessions continuously that really shouldn’t be as far as their playing goes, but they have that magic personality.
Nothing I can do or say to you will probably really impress upon you how important what I have said in this newsletter is. People ask me all the time, “How can I do it? I play better than ole so and so!”
Well, here’s your secret right here in front of you. If you think you’re so good that you don’t need to be nice, you better stay home and keep working your hometown job. Just be as nice as you can possibly be and you might be making $1000 a night with Vince Gill someday. Sure you’ll have some great competition in Nashville, but the rewards are so satisfying when you rise up through them.
You’ll meet some of the greatest people you’ll ever know in this business and very few if any idiots. The rewards are great if you do it right.
Notice this newsletter applies to any instrument, not just steel guitar and if you think about it deeply, it applies to about anything you do in life.
Your buddy, Bobbe

Hello fellow players,
I’m devoting a good portion of this newsletter this week to let all of you know that you missed one of the greatest steel guitar shows ever to be in the Nashville area. This show was put on by Jeff and Gloria Surratt of Show Pro Guitars.
As most of you know, Jeff is the builder and President, CEO of Show Pro Steel Guitar Manufacturing facilities. Gloria is his wife that carries the whip and keeps him working. He put on a show at the ShowPro grounds this past weekend that was by far as wonderful as any I have ever attended.
The food was free as was the attendance and surely has to be what food in Heaven will be like. Shrimp, chicken, steak, incredible vegetables and desserts, lasagna and too many things to even mention of the highest quality you could imagine. The temperature was a beautiful 75 degrees, not a cloud in the sky. A wonderful stage setup under cover for steel guitar players to show their abilities.
When I walked in Tommy White and Mike Johnson were playing a fast Merle Haggard tune. Everything was so perfect it brought tears to my eyes. The band consisted of such great players as Drew Covington and Hank Singer on fiddles, Jeff Surratt playing rhythm guitar and some lead, Mark Johnson on bass and singing and Jim Hartley on drums.
Many great steel players were in attendance such as George Edwards of the Kitty Wells band, Weldon Myrick of Grand Ole Opry fame, Joe Vincent of the early Faron Young band, Eddie Dunlap who is one of Nashville’s greatest new steel guitarists, Lloyd Green, Eddie Gosden, Ken Fox and Randy Beavers of the Leann Womack band to mention a few.
The wonderful thing about this show was that the wives, girlfriends and loved ones of all descriptions seemed to have as good a time as any of the guys. Although they weren’t necessarily on display, Jeff’s 1950 Ford pickup truck was parked prominently where all could admire it and a little more hidden was Jeff and Gloria’s beautiful ’64 Thunderbird.
Overall this was a terrific outing for everyone that attended. If I had to think of anything at all to improve it, I couldn’t.
The Nashville Steel Guitar Club of which I am a member, is doing a show this weekend at the Hotel Preston. There are many members of the club that will be playing in a very nice setting and good atmosphere. Many players have called me and said they were going to be in attendance.
Unlike Jeff’s get-together, you will have to pay for your food and it probably won’t be quite as good, however many of the same people I’m sure will be at this show and that’s what really makes what we all love, that steel guitar noise. So remember, this is a steel guitar weekend in Nashville. If you missed the ShowPro jam, you can get by the North Tennessee Steel Guitar Jam at the Hotel Preston.
I would like to congratulate Dicky Overbey for his induction into the steel guitar Hall of Fame and the late Bobby Caldwell and Winnie Winston for their induction also. I would like to thank the board members for remembering the contributions these past heroes of steel guitar have given to our world of steel.
The board members have a tough job. I, like anyone else can’t always agree with their decisions whole-heartedly, however I don’t think I would like to have the responsibility of making the choices they have to make. There are many wonderful steel guitarists that deserve to be in the Hall of Fame and I’m sure as time goes by, they will all be there.
Your buddy, Bobbe

JL.
Hello fellow players,
Well, we’re finishing up steel guitar month in Nashville here and St. Louis. This is the time of year when you can hear many great famous singers, but most of all, some of the nation’s greatest country backup groups and road bands.
Steel guitar players seem to head this body of players with their Hall of Fame club meetings and jam sessions that seem to pop up all over Nashville every place from downtown Broadway, the Station Inn and the great Preston Hotel jam session to the Jeff and Gloria Surratt jam session in beautiful Mount Juliet just a few miles from downtown.
If anybody out there likes country music at all, this is a wonderful time of year to witness anything you love in this field here in Nashville. Nashville, like Memphis, is pretty famous for its barbecued ribs and I personally feel that the Nashville ribs are superior, but considering where I live, why wouldn’t I?
I feel next year, myself and the employees of Steel Guitar Nashville, will have to throw some kind of party ourselves that will not interfere with any of the other parties going on. This way, we can make this the best steel guitar weekend in the world. I’ll even invite all the Texans and Californians along with the great players from the rest of the world of which there are many many.
I’m not above playing a practical joke on a country music star that I’m working with or even on the band members that I am blessed to work with. I remember a big country music star that I was working with chartering an airplane to get us from Nashville to Minneapolis for a live show in the middle of January many years ago.
The airplane taxied up to where we had to load our instruments and ourselves. It was a 1942 DC3, there were nine of us in the band and a well-known female blond country music star that was extremely nervous about flying in what she called an antique relic.
I kidded her that Orville and Wilbur would be our pilot and co-pilot.
I assured her that this was a good airplane with an incredible reputation. I said, “If anything happens, this is an airplane that I can fly myself.” This did nothing to comfort her in any way, shape or form.
After we got loaded and everybody was in the plane, the pilot staggered out to the airplane obviously extremely inebriated. She and the band started screaming “No, no!” Our guitar player, Fred Newell said, “Don’t be playing any Buddy Holly tapes.”
I helped the pilot into the cockpit, turned around to the group and made my speech. I said, “Don’t worry. I’ve been talking to the co-pilot and he is stone sober. Besides, remember, I could fly it myself if I had to!” And I laughed.
The co-pilot then came out of the administration building. The three of us went to the cockpit and started the Pratt and Whitney 1830s with the co-pilot doing most of the work and we got clearance from the tower to depart runway 22L. The co-pilot gave full throttle and we took off. Everything was very smooth except for a lot of snow that was falling but we finally got above these winter snow clouds and proceeded on our way to Minnesota.
I looked back to check on our star and musicians two or three times on the trip and most were relaxing or sleeping. Our star needed to be reassured and I told her everything is perfect.
Closing the door to the cockpit, we made a beautiful, uneventful landing at our destination and taxied to where the limousines were waiting and after shutting down the left engine on this DC3, the pilot and co-pilot decided to make a quick exit out the cockpit hamburger door.
The reason it’s called a hamburger door is because if you leave the left engine running when you jump out, you will go directly into the propeller blades, hence you will be hamburger. This door is only to be used when the engine is off and the plane is on the ground which it was.
So the pilot and co-pilot left the airplane before I opened the door to the passenger compartment. The star and musicians came forward to thank the pilot and co-pilot. I looked at my passengers and said, “I hope you don’t mind, but they decided to stay behind in Nashville. I told you I could fly the plane up here.”
While a couple of them hugged me, the rest of them wanted to beat me to death. I let this go on for about ten minutes before letting it out that I actually had made it up with the pilot to act like he was drunk and to go out the hamburger door as soon as we landed.
Well, we all have to have fun while we’re out on the road or in the air. Your buddy, Bobbe
