Dina nyhetsmail gör stor nytta eftersom det inte finns något annat forum för info som är så snabbt. Det som ev kommer i Kountry Korrall måste pga pressläggningstid och få tidningar per år vara sena "nyheter". Den gången du tycker att nyhetsbreven tar för mycket tid och ork, så slutar du med bestämda utgivningsdatum och tar dem när du får tid och det finns nyheter.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Wynonna Judd is doing some kind of special concert for aids. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Wynonna will perform at the new Wynn Las Vegas hotel May 31^st, for a concert which will benefit YouthAIDS. The concert is part of a huge party being thrown by jewelry and fashion industry.

QUESTION: I heard that George Strait refused to appear at the Academy of Country Music Awards because he was mad at the Academy. Do you know anything about that?

ANSWER: George wasn’t mad at anybody. He was unable to appear because of a throat infection. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

QUESTION: I know that Buck Owens had a hit on the song “Tiger By The Tail.” My brother in law says that Claude King also ha a hit on that same song. Is that true?

ANSWER: That is not true. Claude King had a # 11 hit on a song titled “I’ve Got The World By The Tail,” in 1962, but it was not the Buck Owens “Tiger By The Tail” tune.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that they were releasing a new boxed set on Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, then I heard they were not. What happened?

ANSWER: The Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash boxed sets will still be released—but just a little later that was originally announced. Release dates for "Johnny Cash - The Legend" and "June Carter Cash - Keep On the Sunny Side: Her Life In Music" have been rescheduled for August 2^nd. "Johnny Cash - The Legend" celebrates the 50^th anniversary of the Man In Black's recording career with 107 tracks on four CD's. June’s "Sunny Side" two-CD set offers the first-ever comprehensive overview of her 64-year career span. The 40 tracks include rare 78's, 45's and album cuts.

QUESTION: Back in the 60’s, there was a song on the radio about “That’s My Goal For Today.” I don’t know if it was a hit but was a very good record. DO you know the artists’ name and whatever happened to him?

ANSWER: “My Goal For Today” was Kenny Price’s 5^th chart single. It peaked at # eleven in 1967 and was on the charts for 15 weeks. Kenny died in 1987.

QUESTION: I remember a song on the radio back in the 60’s about “He’s A Jolly Good Fellow.” It wasn’t a Christmas song but was played quite often back then. Do you know the name of the guy who had the record?

ANSWER: “He’s A Jolly Good Fellow” was a # 39 hit for Charlie Walker in 1965. It was on the charts for 7 weeks.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Johnny Cash’s wife just died. I thought his wife died some time ago. Can you clear this up?

ANSWER: Vivian Liberto, who was Cash’s first wife-died May 24th at age 71 following a battle with cancer. They had four daughters Rosanne, Kathleen, Cindy and Tara. They divorced in 1966, and Johnny married June Carter in 1968.

QUESTION: My uncle used to sing a song about “I Just Dropped In To Say Goodbye.” He said it was on the radio back in the 1950’s. Do you have any information on that song or who sang it?

ANSWER: “I Just Dropped In To Say Goodbye” was the flipside of Carl Smith’s 1955 number eleven hit, “Don’t Tease Me.”

Hi, The Grascals - no rascals... the last report from this Nashville trip...

Yesterday Saturday May 28th, still nice weather, and I headed out for a repeat at the flea market.
More sellers on saturdays... browsed for a couple of hours and said hello to some dealers I know like "Magic Rat"... I found the odd Ed Bruce cd that came out in 1997 on a small label... seldom seen...
Visited som record shops again later on and found me a Willie VHS about his career... had some coffee at my hotel and did some planning about packing all the stuff... then I took the bus downtown and bus #25 to Music Row. I had my Arby's of course and then headed to The Station Inn for second day in a row... this time to see the new bluegrass group The Grascals... visit: www.grascals.com
They have a new cd out on ROUNDER 0549 - Dolly is singing on one song and they are known for opening for her at different occasions. She says "One Of The Greatest Albums I've Ever Listened To". So who are they?
They are: Terry Smith-bass; David Talbot-banjo: Terry Eldredge-rhythm guitar;
Jamie Johnson-rhythm guitar; Jimmy mattingly-fiddle; Danny Roberts-mandolin.
I arrived early about 20.45 and the entrance fee was $10. The place was already
full and there were hardly no seats.... and there was a band on the scene,
bluegrass of course, and done by some kinda family band, with a very young boy
on banjo... he was really popular and might big a "name" someday if he isn't already
in the Bluegrass Community.
I found me a barstool misplaced where the exit door was... and soon there was a knock
on the door and I had the pleasure of welcoming Terry Eldregde to the Station Inn.
Right on time... they started exactly 21.07 and played hell of a bluegrass,
which is gonna to be broadcast on the channel 37 on satellite. Mostly they sang songs
from above mentioned cd, but also some other songs like:
"I'll Go Steppin' Too", "Sunny Side Of The Mountain" (tribute to Jimmy Martin),
"Hard Times", mandolin instrumental "Bill Cheatham", "White Lightning", "Saginaw Michigan", "Head Over Heels In Love With You", "Today I Started Loving You Again", "Roll Muddy River'... end of first set which lasted for 1 hour and 7 minutes...
Now they break was really long as they signed autographs and chatted with the fans.
They were gonna be in Indiana for a rodeo tomorrow... at 22.59 the 2nd set started..
"Big Harlan Taylor", "Doin My Time", "Keep Me From Goin' Away" (written by Paul Craft
and one of T.E.'s favorites of alltime), "Bonaparte's Retreat" on banjo..., "Half A Heart",
"Where I Come From", and the top of the bill in my book:
"I'm Not That Good At Goodbye" - a real honky tonk classic.. by ..... ....
Most of the time Terry sang lead, at least 80% of the time, but at some time most of them added some vocal. "Will You Be Loving Another Man", " High On A Hilltop", "Ruby" and the final "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms" now the clock was 23.47.
A real nice show with professionals.. and I wish them the best in the bluegrass world of country music. Luckily for me, Dan happened to be in the audience, so I had a ride with him to my Midway motel... a nice day and I had some cold drinks and softly drifted
off to sleep listening to Midnight Jamboree with Dottie Rambo... sleep came fast!

Today, Sunday I have been packing and taking it easy took a ride to Tower records to check on some items and also Great Escape... but nothing much there today.. for me.
Had the last Arby roast beef meal. And now I'm hammering here at the computer at library. I've had a nice vacation, and can recommend Nashville. Although it can be hot... today it was 82 degrees in the shade...

I was watching a show about motorcycles on the history channel four nights ago. They were talking about the performance of some of the early motorcycle manufacturers and proceeded to do a lengthy tribute to Crocker, the premier classic of the day.

While on the subject of Crocker, the name P.A. Bigsby was mentioned as designer, innovator and the spark plug of this great company.

Needless to say, I paid very close attention to the rest of the TV show even though Paul's musical manufacturing genius was never mentioned.

Having owned many Bigsby guitars myself and having developed in the fifties as a steel guitarist, my love and admiration for the guitars of Paul Bigsby is easily understood. Living on the East Coast, I never had the chance to meet Paul personally but corresponded with him many times and even spoke with him a few times by telephone. I was impatient when I told him that I didn't want to wait 3 years for him to build me a guitar. I wanted to be put near the top of the waiting list.

It didn't take but about 30 seconds to realize this was not going to happen. He stated that even with Webb Pierce's new recordings of "Slowly" and "More and More" with Bud Isaacs and his pedal Bigsby on the charts, even Webb's road player, Sonny Burnett, was going to have to wait 3 years for his guitar. Paul Bigsby was an honorable man who dealt with people on a first come, first served basis and was not swayed by fame or the chance to make extra profit.

When Bob Meadows ordered his triple neck in the early 50's, Bob went over to Paul's house in Downey, CA to watch him put the finishing touches to his guitar. Bob could hardly get back to the motel room to play the guitar when it was finished, but Paul stated, "This guitar is going nowhere until I get the case built."

Bob shrieked, "No, I'll take it without a case."

Paul said "No guitar leaves my garage without a case."

Bob waited on pins and needles three more days for his case to be built.

Being a country music fan, every December Paul would drive from Phlox St. in Downey to the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville just to go to the Opry. He was always recognized from the stage and very deservedly so because many of his products were on stage during the show.

Mr. Bigsby is known by every guitarist everywhere for the famous vibrato-tremolo unit that raises and lowers the strings on standard guitars and for his very high quality volume pedals that move sideways for tone control and rock up and down for volume.

Now the reason for restating what many of you already know is my own observance in seeing Paul move from his design and building of the Crocker motorcycle into the making of musical instruments and parts. As shop foreman for the Crocker motorcycle company, he was a designer, machinist and production engineer. He became extremely proficient in working with cast aluminum and building complex patterns to cast these aluminum motorcycle parts.

The first aluminum overhead valve 45 degree air-cooled motorcycle engines were designed by Paul Bigsby. He has also been given credit for designing the famous hemi head engines for Crocker. These motorcycles have been compared to Duesenberg automobiles.

Only a few Crockers were made, somewhere around a hundred, and are now worth 80-100 grand to collectors. Mr. Crocker offered to give any professional rider his Crocker motorcycle if he was ever beaten by a Harley or an Indian in a sanctioned race. The records don't show that he ever had to do this. Paul Bigsby was also quite a motorcycle rider and set many world records that stood for several years in the late 20's and early 30's.

But back to the connection between motorcycles and musical instruments.

When Crocker went out of business in 1942, Paul's love for music and guitars and encouragement from friends, Merle Travis and Joaquin Murphy, inspired him to build instruments that were copies of theirs. The copies were much better than Merle's or Joaquin's originals, so he ended up building guitars for these excellent players.

Paul brought his skills from the world of motorcycle manufacturing to the art of building guitars. His experience in building patterns for cast aluminum parts for motorcycles was directly transferred to building cast aluminum endplates and necks for steel guitars. He designed the first inline keyhead for the standard guitar. Many of the innovations that flowed from his creative mind are still prominently in use today.

As I look at my Bigsby triple neck and at the pictures of the old Crocker, I can only smile.

Ännu ett fullmatat Nyhetsbrev kommer här. Tack alla ni som bidrar med skriverier, utan er blev det inget utskick. Det är alltid roligt att få rapporter från det som händer här i Sverige och övriga Norden, så glöm inte att skriva några rader och berätta om era upplevelser.

Jag är snart klar med mixen av Bobby Flores & Country Minstrels "live" från den 15 januari i år. Det blir en DVD/CD med förmodligen hela 19 låtar. Vi jobbar nu med rättigheter med mera. Jag håller er informerad om fortsättningen.

Om Dalarnas Country Music Club (DCMC) 30-årsfirande i Säterdalen 28 maj 2005

Jag håller helt med ordförande Anders Brundell, som rapporterade i förra veckans Nyhetsbrev. Det var ett jättelyckat arrangemang.

Tommy Backström hade ordnat inte mindre än sju svenska band för att fira jubiléet. En riktig manifestation: Satellites, Weeds, Coyte Smile, Western Satellites, Annica & The Countryneers, Mats Rådberg & Rankarna och Country Cream.

Det var en äkta svensk sommarfest i en klassisk folkpark. Maken berättade att han varit där som raggare på 60-talet och kom mycket väl ihåg den branta backen ner till (eller upp från!) festplatsen. Det klassiska svenska sommarregnet började när vi for dit. Det hindrade dock inte att det var kanonstämning från första stund. Många var sugna på mat och dryck direkt, så det inhyrda kaféet fick det hett om öronen (eftersom det ännu inte var hett på grillen). De flesta av oss löste matproblemet genom att starta med något drickbart, som stillade den värsta hungern. Snart var grillarna i gång och det såldes för fulla muggar.

Banden har litet olika inriktning och stil, så det fanns absolut något för alla. Publiken stimmade och trivdes. Både publiken och banden var ganska högljudda. Man fick bra kontakt med grannarna runt borden eftersom man var tvungen att komma mycket nära för att prata med varandra. Det var tyvärr något problem vid ljudbordet de första timmarna. Det var svårt att urskilja de olika instrumenten och t o m när Tommy bara pratade i mikrofonen, var det svårt att höra vad han sade.

Från och med Annica & The Countryneers blev det i alla fall helt OK ljud, efter att Tommy själv hade hängt över ljudteknikern ett bra tag. Debatten om hur man mixar countryband lär fortsätta!

Många andra countryklubbar var förstås representerade bland de 300 gästerna. Det var minst tio medlemmar från Stockholm Country Music Club med på festen, så det blev nästan en extra klubbträff för oss. Banden gick fint att dansa till och golvet var fullt mest hela tiden. Alla verkade trivas och Tommy Backström kan verkligen känna sig stolt och nöjd efter en sådan insats. Jag kan intyga att Tommy var JÄTTETRÖTT efter sista låten klockan 1 på natten. Då hade han, förutom ansvaret för större delen av arrangemanget, själv varit konferencier och spelat i Weeds och Country Cream! Jag har hört att även kassören (som själv satt i biljettluckan) var nöjd med ekonomin. Budgeten hade visst nätt och jämnt, men i alla fall, klarats. Tack alla i DCMC för en mycket festlig kväll!

Trots den här jättesatsningen på lördagen, körde DCMC som vanligt, jam i Kvarnsveden sista torsdagen i månaden. Det råkade bli samma vecka som Säterdagsfesten. Samma entusiaster håller i arrangemanget där. Folkets Hus stora sal var lika fullsatt som vanligt. Ingen som klagar på att man inte orkar i Dalarna, inte. Maken och jag var med även där och jag fick min favoritlåt ”Midnight Highway” spelad av Country Cream. Denna gång utan att varken tjata eller hota. Ni är för rara!

Hei Per-Uno.

Jeg har nå spilt to ganger i Sverige og det har vært kjempebra. En fantastisk tilbakemelding fra alle og jeg er blitt behandlet som en superstjerne fra USA.

Valne var intim og koselig og Ydre var stor og fantastisk.

Det spesielle med svenske festivaler som vi følte var at det var en familie festival og at unger var med på festivalen. Det var veldig gøy å se. Det skjer ikke i Norge. Her er det som regel veldig fulle folk som går på festivaler.

Når vi spilte i Norge på Låvedans på lørdagskvelden var det fullt av slagsmål både foran og bak scenen.

Litt av en kulturforskjell.

Jeg gleder meg til å booke jobber i Sverige igjen og håper at jeg innfridde publikums forventninger.

Arrangørene vet jeg var veldig fornøyde.

Nå venter store festivaler i Norge og Danmark og jobbing med en ny plate til høsten. Jeg har allerede kommet inn i skriveprossessen og det er det gøyeste av alt bortsett fra å stå på scenen og synge de for publikum.

I'm mailing you Marti Brom's new cd Heartache Numbers, you still have the
radio show there do you??? If not, I hope you can turn this cd to somebody
who could give it some airplay! I'm sure you're going to love it, Marti is
my best friend and sings with us on a regular basis. This cd however, she
did in Texas, produced by Justin Trevino and backing musicians include
Dickie Overby and Bobby Flores. Below some scans from the latest issue of

"I`d Like To Live It Again" is the titel song of my previous album.

A sure great " true story" tune written by DJ, Singer & Songwriter Smokey Stover from Texas ... who wrote a bunch of good tunes for a lot of big name stars in country music, like George Jones and many others.

I loved the song so much after I recorded it with Nashville greats like Tommy Hill, Buddy Emmons, Buddy Spicher, Pete Wade, Pig Robbin ... and others at the old Starday Studio,

so I even made it the titel track a few years ago...

( it's about time!! :) Meanwhile, check out these pics I have in my files; the guitar on the workbench was built for Eddie Gabbard and most likely is the last PA ever built (that's what he had told Eddie) from Jan. -63. It's now proudly set up in my living room, as pretty and shiny as the day it was delivered.

Hi Bobbe,
I think that Paul was a factory rider and developer for the Crocker motorcycle team in the early-to-mid 1930's.
Paul was on the US Speedway motorcycle team that went to Wembley Stadium in England in1937. His teammates on that team were Lammy Lamaroux, and the Milne (pronounced my-lan) brothers Jack and Cordy.
Jack, who was living in England and riding, I think for the Wimbledon team, won the world Championship that year.
Anyway, Paul was well known as a world class rider and tuner of speedway bikes long before he Impacted the music world so greatly.
You probably know all this already, but I wanted to be sure that Paul's talent on and with bikes didn't get missed.

One of my memories of trying to purchase a Bigsby steel guitar in the fifties was of calling Paul and asking him about the possibility of obtaining a used one. He said occasionally someone would call wanting a second guitar and putting their first guitar up for sale.

He knew of two people who had Bigsby's for sale within 200 miles of where I was in Oklahoma. One was Maurice Anderson in Dallas, who was selling his triple neck because he had a single 10 string, 8 pedal on order. The other person was Bob Meadows in Ft. Worth.

I met their owners and checked out both guitars and ended up purchasing the guitar from Bob Meadows. I found it very interesting in the way that Paul kept track of who had his guitars, how they felt about them and whether they were going to be coming up for sale or not in the future. Paul seemed to keep most of this information in his head as no records were ever found after his demise in later years.

You may ask "How do his guitars stack up today?" going on sixty years later.

His guitars are still the most beautiful, great sounding, precision works of art in the world of steel guitar. I know of several Bigsby steel guitars that are being played weekly and earning their owners an income. It seems as though the value of these guitars may soon get to the point that they will impractical or unsafe to subject to the nutty dangerous world that we now live in. We hear of inexpensive guitars being stolen all the time. After all, you don't see a Stradivarius violin being played in the band in your local brew house.

QUESTION: The guys on radio were talking about the man who wrote “Kiss An Angel Good Morning” had passed away. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Ben Peters died May 25^th from complications of pneumonia in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 71 years old. Peters was born in Hollandale, Mississippi and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1980. He scored his first number one in 1967 with Eddy Arnold's "Turn the World Around." His list of hits included "More to Me," "It's Gonna Take a Little Bit Longer" and the Grammy-winner "Kiss an Angel Good Morning,” plus "Daytime Friends," Johnny Rodriguez's "Love Put a Song in My Heart" and Freddy Fender's 1975 "Before the Next Teardrop Falls,” John Conlee's "Before My Time" and Pride's "Burgers and Fries" and "A Whole Lotta Things to Sing About."

QUESTION: Back in the 50’s there was a song played on the radio all the time about “That’s Me Without You.” Do you know the name of the singer and whatever happened to him?

ANSWER: “That’s Me Without You” was Webb Pierce’s 5^th charted tune. It was the flipside of “I’ll Go On Alone” and both songs made it to number four on the country charts in 1953. Pierce died in 1991.

QUESTION: What was the name of the guy who had the talking record about “Iven” many years ago? Was it a hit?

ANSWER: “Dear Ivan” was Jimmy Dean’s 3^rd chart single. It peaked at # 9 in 1962 and was on the charts for 10 weeks.

Du tyckte att man kunde tipsa om countryevenemang som varit och jag vill bara berätta om vad jag och några kompisar gjorde i lördags. Vi tittade nämligen förbi på Mondo vid Medborgarplatsen i Stockholm på klubben A-six-pack-to-go. Det var faktiskt en fantastisk upplevelse. Massor med bra musik och verkligen pure country. Dessutom var det en jäkligt trevlig stämmning och ett bra drag. Snackade en del med killarna som håller i klubben och testade även countryfrågesporten som de körde. Kul initiativ! Hoppas på att träffa fler countrylovers där framöver. Kan varmt rekomenderas.

Howdy!
Jag tänkte bara berätta att den 28 maj så åkte en hel busslast country-fans från Mora Country & Western Club till Säterdalen och DCMC's 30-årsjubileum. Vi var 58 stycken glada och förväntansfulla individer som äntrade bussen hyrd från Dala-Buss. MCWC bjöd alla medlemmar på bussresan så dom behövde bara punga ut med ynka 120 kronor i entre. Tack DCMC för rabatten på inträdet!
Ett jättetack också till vår suveräne chaufför Hans Lindquist med fru!
Inte att förglömma No Name Band som underhöll akustiskt i bussen både dit och hem med ståbas, gitarrer och virveltrumma.
En av gitarristerna visade på hemvägen att det går att spela gitarr liggande på rygg i mittgången!
En rondell blev hans fall.....

Det blev en hellyckad afton med mycket bra musk från sju olika svenska band.
Jag tycker personligen att Coyote Smile från Borlänge var det stora utropstecknet under kvällen.
Inget dåligt all på scenen för övrigt men Coyote Smile utmärkte sej verkligen!
Kanonlåtar, bra framförda med båda ståbas och lapsteel och ett sjujävla gung.
Det här stuket tilltalar i alla fall undertecknad som gillar om countryn blandas med lite rockabilly emellanåt.

I takt med att innehållet i medhavda dryckeskärl tömdes steg sorlet och dansgolvet fylldes mer och mer.
Ingen behövde sakna någon musikstil inom countryn, där fanns garanterat något för alla.

Ett par saker dock som inte var så bra:
1. Den bedrövliga servicen i matserveringen, totalt kaos rådde stundtals och ingen innanför disken visste något om nånting.
2. Det borde varit lite kringaktiviteter som till exempel försäljare av skivor, hattar & boots och andra attiraljer.
Det fanns gott om plats runt väggarna i lokalen att fylla upp med knallar och dylikt.

Ett par bra saker:
1. Coyote Smile släpper sin CD i höst, missa inte den!
Jag har hört den redan hihi....(tack Petri).
2. Tummen upp för Säterdalen som har ramp upp till ingången för rörelsehindrade och barnvagnar!
Tagen lärdom vissa andra.

Vi tog oss an Din uppmaning att skriva om trevliga festivalbesök.

Vi har precis "landat" hemma i Blekinge, ifrån ett gästspel på Nora Country & Western dagar.

En mycket trevlig stad med ett "familjärt" arrangemang. Staden bjuder på en pittoresk upplevelse med kullerstenar och gamla byggnader. Det hela påminner faktiskt om en westernstad med gamla tågbanor och slitna fasader. Den enda smolken i bägaren, blev det regn som i ständig ström föll över alla besökare och artister.

Det är svårt att få stränginstrumenten i fas, så att säga. Men skam, den som ger sig. Det byggdes tak och skydd över det mesta och stämningen var högre än solen på himlen.

En mycket trevlig tillställning och vi vill med detta tacka Mikael Johansson i Jack Daniels Band, för den service med sovplatser som tillhandahölls för oss.

Vi tackar även Dottie and the Revivels för ett gott samarbete på scenen. Det blev en final som heter duga !

Dock inte att förglömma Christina Birgell från Svenska Country o Westerncluben (Krutstänk), för det stöd hon alltid ger oss countryfantaster....Och vi lovar att spela för Dig i Vemdalen ! Vi hade en jättetrevlig samvaro på Nora stadshotell.

Sist men inte minst ger vi Ulrik Scheller, en en eloge, för att han inviterade oss till Nora...

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Buck Owens was recording with Brad Paisley. Is that true?

ANSWER: Buck Owens has reportedly agreed to record some tracks for Brad’s next album but the recording session was canceled due to Buck’s throat problem. The session is to be rescheduled and the album is due for summer release.

QUESTION: There was something on radio about Jerry Reed now recording gospel music. I thought he was a hell-raiser?

ANSWER: Reed admits to raising his share of cane in the past but added, “I grew up going to church, was saved and was a Christian. Then I got into the music business and went to Hell in a hand-basket. No matter how much money I made…there was something missing. So now I’ve renewed my relationship with Christ and now I’m full again!” His single, “A Brand New Me” was released June 1^st.

QUESTION: I just watched Webb Pierce on the old Porter Wagoner Show on RFD-TV Network. He sang “Slowly” and Porter mentioned that it was one of his biggest hits. When was that song a hit and just what determines which hit was the biggest?

ANSWER: Webb’s “Slowly” was a number one for 17 weeks in 1954. When referring to someone’s “biggest hits,” he could be referring to the chart numbers, the number of weeks on the charts, the number of weeks in the number one spot, radio airplay or number of copies sold.

QYESTION: There was something on the radio about some Ray Charles recordings being re-released. Do you know anything about that?

ANSWER: The 1984 album, “ Friendship,” will be re-released July 12^th by Columbia/Legacy Records and features Ray Charles duets with country artists including Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., The Oak Ridge Boys, George Jones, Chet Atkins, Janie Fricke, B.J. Thomas, Ricky Skaggs, Mickey Gilley, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash. Duets with Tony Bennett and Billy Joel from the mid-'80s have been added as bonus tracks.

QUESTION: Our classic country radio station plays a song about “Out Of Hand” every once in a while but they never identify the artist. Do you know anything about such a recording?

ANSWER: “Out Of Hand” was Gary Stewart’s 3^rd chart single. It peaked at # 4 in 1974 and was on the charts for 16 weeks.

QUESTION: Back in the early 50’s, there was a song on the radio about “being too old to cut the mustard.” I think it was a group of folks on the record. Do you know the correct title of the song and the name of the folks who had that record and was it a hit?

ANSWER: “Too Old To Cut The Mustard” was a # 6 hit for Bill Carlisle in 1951. It was on the charts for 6 weeks. Bill died in 2003.

STORY BEHIND TE SONG

According to Hank Thompson--he really did not write his 1960s hit, “A Six Pack To Go,” even though his name is listed on the writers credits.

Hank commented, “I didn’t really write that song—I just adapted it. Even though I did make a few changes in the lyrics and the melody—I didn’t write the song. The song was actually written by a couple of guys named Johnny Lowe and Dick Hart. I found the song while I was on the way to California to a recording session for Capitol Records. And on the way we booked a show in an out of the way place called Holbrook, Arizona, at an American Legion hall. During intermission, a guy I knew asked me to come over to a little club he owned there in town. So after we finished the show, I went over there and he had a three piece band playing and they started singing, “hey Mr. bartender-please don’t be so slow. I’ve got time for one more round and a six pack to go.” So I asked the three guys where they got that song. One of the guys said he had written it with two other guys while they were working up in Illinois and they had used it as their theme song.”

“I told him that I thought it was a good song and if it was available I would record it when I got to California. So I made a few changes in the tune and recorded it in December 1959. It is still one of my most requested songs.”

“A Six Pack To Go” entered the country music charts March 21, 1960 and peaked at # 10. It was Hank’s 41^st chart single and was on the charts for 16 weeks.

From the beginning of the original Sho-Bud permanent guitars built between '57 and '65, the only people who could service them were the people who built them. Primarily, every one of them was built differently according to the welded pedal setup that was originally installed on them. This is the fact that keeps the value down on these most beautiful and best sounding of all Sho-Bud guitars.

These are the guitars Buddy Emmons built his career on along with Buddy Charleton, Pete Drake, Lloyd Green, Weldon Myrick, Jimmy Crawford, Hal Rugg, Billy Braddy, Tom Morrell, Sonny Burnett and almost all of the Nashville players in the '60's along with great steel guitar players from the world over. This guitar was the first mass-produced custom built for the player steel guitar in history, following the tradition of Bigsby but on a much higher production basis.

There are hundreds of these guitars under beds and in closets that owners love too much to part with, but are unplayable because of needing service or a more modern pedal setup. I have decided to fill this niche as no one else is stepping up to the plate and will commence to do service on these guitars now and in the future. This should be wonderful news for the hundreds of you who have or know where you can rescue this most classic of all guitars.

Moving on to the next subject, we now have many deliriously happy users of the new Dobro simulator that we call the BoBro. Such players as Randy Travis' Steve Hinson, Martina McBride's David Spires, Ken Mellon's Dan Bentley and Pete Finney of Patty Loveless and Trace Adkins are now using the BoBro on recordings and live tours.

The tone of this device is proclaimed to sound more like a genuine resonator guitar than any previous device manufactured. The greatest thing is the size and dependability. This would, with it's great tone, make it one of the finest values to come along in the world of steel guitar in a long time.

News item number three. Now let me offer an opinion of another wonderful product that is available to us steel guitarists and resonator/slide guitar players. The new glass, lead filled Boyett bars have a quality that I was not aware of until spending several hours using one. Not only does the bar look great and sound even better, but one of it's magic qualities is that it slides on the strings as well as any bar I've ever used, but does not have the tendency to slip out of your hand the way a stainless steel or chrome bar does.

In making complicated slants and reverses with your lapsteel or pedal steel, it is very possible as we all know, to lose the grip on the bar and it seems to have a mind of it's own and either exits the scene completely or goes sliding down the guitar at the least. For years, I have always had an extra chrome bar sitting in the keyhead of my guitar just waiting for the bar I was using to acquire this mind of it's own. This problem seems to be gone with the Boyett glass bars. They stay attached to your fingers but slide beautifully on the strings. Let me know if I can save your day by making one of these available to you for $39.90 for the standard size which is seven eights diameter by three and a quarter long. Special sizes on request.

I want to thank you for the tremendous response I got on the Paul Bigsby history. It seems as though thousands of you really care about this important segment of our steel guitar heritage. I would also again like to thank those of you who fed me pictures, stories and details not available anyplace else. Many of you knew him personally or had talked to him and been by his shop. Your colorful stories may be the subject of forthcoming tips and newsletters. This man was quite a character whose life and accomplishments touched thousands and thousands.

Jag har just kommit hem från Värmland och Köpung (invid Kil) där vår familj hälsat på hos hustru Evas syster som har en liten gård där. Alltid trevligt att komma till Värmland och speciellt då Evas syster Karin spelar traditionell folkmusik i en liten orkester där. Vi blev medbjudna till Ransäters spelmansstämma i fredags och det var kul att åter se festplatsen. Det spelades i alla hörn och det kändes lite som en riktig countryfestival. Country Minstrels, kommer för övrigt att spela där på countryfestivalen den 16 juli. Nåväl, det är alltid skönt med lite avkoppling från det dagliga livet hemma. Men det är faktiskt ganska jobbigt att köra de 35 milen från Värmland. Kanske börjar jag bli gammal och trött?

Hejsan Janne!

Nu var det ett bra tag sedan, men det har legat på med bestyr som hör våren och sommaren till. Stunderna framför datorn blir kortare och kortare, men jag har dock hunnit med att läsa Nyhetsbreven. Jag tycker att som ideell skapare av nyhetsbrevet ska du inte behöva ta en massa skit, varken från den ena eller andra ”besserwisser”. Jag ansluter mig till den skaran som kommit med glada tillrop. Men så är det… gör någon något då ska det klankas och klagas. Oftast är det ”soffliggare” som piggnar till i sådana lägen.

För ett bra tag sedan kom det en CD till klubbens brevlåda från Higway 40. Min första och spontana reaktion var… vilket proffsigt omslag! Snyggt fotat och med bakgrunder som smälter in i sammanhanget. Dessutom finns det en mycket trevlig presentation av bandets medlemmar. Countrybandet Higway 40 som består av sex killar och en tjej har alltså kommit ut med sin andra CD med titeln "We´re from the country".

Över till CD:ns innehåll som börjar med ”I´m From The Country”, en mycket passande låt att starta CD:n med. Skivan innehåller 13 covers på både kända och okända låtar från några av Nashvilles bästa låtskrivare. Det gör också att man känner igen en hel del låtar. Och det gör också att man börjar jämföra tolkningarna på olika sätt. Men det är säkert en risk som Higway 40 har kalkylerat med.

Sista låten Ol´lonesome sitter som en smäck, och är en perfekt avslutning på en CD som jag varmt rekommenderar till nästa grillfest.

Ska man säga något riktigt elakt om "We´re from the country" är de syntstrofer som hörs här och där. De tycker jag inte hör hemma vare sig i countrymusiken eller på denna CD. Men som redan de gamla grekerna sade, smaken är som baken och tur är väl det.

Lycka till Higway 40, vi syns säkert någonstans där ute i sommar.

For a frequently retired guy, Garth Brooks sure gets a lot of press. First, he proposed marriage to Trisha Yearwood (she accepted) at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in Bakersfield a few days ago in front of a large array of reporters and photographers.
Then last week, Capitol Records announced they and Garth had mutually agreed to terminate their "license agreement" with a happy handshake and no money exchanging hands.
Sounds like Garth owns some, if not all, the master recordings that were released on Capitol under a license agreement. That would make sense. Brooks is well known as a hard negotiator and is thought to have used his leverage to pretty much get anything he wanted during contract renegotiations a few years ago. If so, he controls his old masters and any future recordings he might make during or after his most recent retirement.

"American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood plans to hit Nashville and the country music industry with a hard swing this week. She'll perform on the taping of CMT's "100 Greatest Duets" on Wednesday, at the CMA Music Festival at The Coliseum in Nashville on Thursday, and at the Grand Ole Opry on Friday. If you haven't heard the Oklahoma native yet, you will soon.

Looks like Willie Nelson's long awaited reggae album is about to hit the market. Willie recorded the bulk of it nearly a decade ago, but it stayed on the shelf due to record label shuffling. Now polished up, packaged and ready, "Countryman" is set for a July 12th release. Videos have just been completed in Jamaica for covers of Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" and Johnny and June Carter Cash's "I'm A Worried Man."

Some of country music history is going on sale this week. The estate sale for the late Skeeter Davis will be held June 8th through the 12th in the Nashville suburb of Brentwood (8AM-5PM at 309 Seward Road). More info is available at www.BereniceDenton.com.

Kenny Chesney gets a network special. Tentatively called "Kenny Chesney: Somewhere In The Sun," will air on the ABC-TV network on November 23rd. We're promised a look at the "behind-the-scenes-camaradie" at Chesney's concerts and his fun lovin' Caribbean lifestyle.

The CMA Awards show is leaving CBS-TV after 34 years. November's broadcast will be the last, at least for awhile. CMA officials have agreed on a six-year deal with ABC-TV which reportedly will involve bigger bucks.

I'm always in a quest to bring the steel guitar world and the world of music in general, something usable and enjoyable. I am now asking for opinions on my next video tape. Many of you asked for an instructional DVD on how to get C6th sounds on E9th tuning. Most of you know that this is an attainable goal and actually it is attainable without much effort. Many of you are playing single neck E9th guitars as this is the basic tuning that everyone seems to want to hear and is the tuning that 99 percent off all country records are recorded with. E9th is definitely the standard of the country world and if you are playing a single neck guitar, you're guitar weighs almost half as much, takes about half the space to move around and of course, about half as much in maintenance. So, if you can play a lot of the C6th sounds on the E9th neck, you have the best of both worlds.

Remember the intro to the Gatlin Brothers song named "Houston"?

For years, everyone thought that was recorded on the C6th neck until they saw the artist on television being backed up by the player who recorded it and showed that it was done on the E9th neck.

There are many ways to get the C6th sound on the E9th neck, you might ask "Well, how am I going to play the intro to "Nightlife"? Every band I work with plays "Nightlife"!"

This famous intro and instrumental turnaround can be accomplished beautifully on the E9th neck where your band will never know the difference, with just 2 pedals and 1 knee lever.

This is one DVD idea that many of you have suggested to me and my last DVD, "Intros, Fills and Turnarounds" has been well received because it was in answer to your requests. As always, I want to give you what you're looking for so please let me know.

Äntligen har det blivit sommar i Stockholm och jag hoppas att alla läsare har det fint varhelst ni bor. Själv sitter jag en hel del i studion trots det fina vädret.

Från 0 – 100 på 10 sekunder säger man om en bil som är superbra. Detsamma kan man säga om nya Gazetten, Stockholms Country Music Clubs medlemstidning. Från att ha varit i stort sett ingenting under många år så får jag en tidning i brevlådan som verkligen kan kallas tidning. Denna nya Gazetten är på 32 sidor fullmatad med information om countrymusik (vilket inte varit medlemsbladets "trade mark" tidigare) både med artiklar och annonsblad för olika festivaler. Redaktören Robert Ryttman och hans medhjälpare har gjort en hjälteinsats med att skapa en countrymusiktidning för oss Stockholmare som vi kan vara stolta över. Fram och baksidan är i fyrfärg och tidningen speglar proffsighet rakt igenom. Kan man nu bara fortsättningsvis hålla sig inom countrymusikgränserna i kommande nummer så vore det fantastiskt. Det finns tyvärr en tendens inom flera countrymusikklubbar i Sverige att man t ex recenserar CDs och ger dem högt betyg trots att plattorna egentligen inte borde finnas i en countrymusikpublikation. Men det är som med de svenska countryfestivalerna, alla artister vill visa upp sig, trots brist på kunskap och intresse för själva musikformen. En del arrangörer tror på en blandning av musikstilar. Efter succén på Mosebacke tidigare i vår fortsätter gänget bakom "A Hillbilly & Bluegrass night" på samma gamla dammiga väg, men den här gången i mycket mindre skala med tanke på sommaren och det vackra vädret. Lördag 18/6 står Hornstulls nya ölhall/kvarterskrog Sjöhästen värd för kvällen. Det blir traditionell musik från Appalacherna, Kentucky ploinka-ploinka och West Virginia religiositet i en salig blandning. Hårdnackade fiddletunes och banjosmatter med andra ord.

Ja så då är Nina och jag - man och hustru! ca. 70 pers. kom till Dingtuna Kyrka 28 maj för att beskåda det vackra(!) brudparet.
(se bifogad bild). Och så kunde vi förståss inte låta bli att sjunga en duett i kyrkan, litet med glimten i ögat blev det "Backstreet Affair". Festen efteråt bjöd också på mycket sång, musik, tal, och god mat o dryck!

Jag tänkte passa på att tipsa om att man kan lyssna på Nina och mig nu på Lördag den 18 juni i Kil. Då spelar vi med vår grupp "The High-Jacks" på "Glada Killingen". Country och grillkväll på en trevlig krog mitt i Kil. (jag lovar även att jag kör några Jerry Lee-stänkare!)

Man kan även höra oss på Countryfestivalen i Ransäter 16 juli där också bl.a. Country Minstrels spelar! Nina dyker också upp i ett av de andra festivalbanden, -spännande!

MARATON KONSERTHELG FOR OVE STØYLEN

Ove Støylen spiller på en countryfestival, et kjøpesenter, i en revy, gir en kirkekonsert, en frilufts-ettermiddagskonsert, og spiller til også til dansefest på ei strand i Åmli. To kor, Grimstad barnekor og Simonstad sangkor opptrer
med Støylen i løpet av helgeturnéen.

Om det virkelig er rekord er usikkert, men at artister opptrer seks ganger på seks
forskjellige steder og arrangementer på litt over ett døgn hører nok til sjeldenhetene.
Dette skjer nemlig til helgen. Ove Støylen - delvis alene og delvis sammen
med bandet "The Whitenecks" - opptrer seks ganger mellom lørdag klokka 12 til søndag klokka 22. At dette virkelig er en maratonhelg forstår man når man ser
at stedene er Saltrød, Grimstad, Hægebostad og Åmli (tre forskjellige steder i Åmli).

Ove Støylen og the Whitenecks innleder med denne maratonhelgen en lang sommer med reising og en lang rekke konserter. Ove Støylen er aktuell på en rekke countryfestivaler i sommer, fire i Norge og en i Nederland. I september debuterer Støylen med konserter i Danmark. Ove Støylen er også aktuell med sin nye plate "It´s about time".

Andre opptreden er i Grimstad klokka 20 under Countrygallaen på Gundersholmen i Grimstad. Denne konserten får et helt spesielt innhold: Grimstad barnekor
På konserten i Grimstad skal 15 barn fra Grimstad barnekor synge sammen med
Ove Støylen & the Whitenecks på sangen "100 % absolute woman". Barnekoret har på eget initiativ øvd inn sangen, og da Støylen fikk høre om dette var det ikke lenge før kontakten ble opprettet og avtalen var klar.

Ove Støylen & The Whitenecks spiller til utedans på badeplassen i Åmli. Utedansen er en del av Åmlidagane. Her kan kan det bli livlig.

För någon vecka sedan fick jag nya numret av SCC-NYTT som är medlemstidningen för Smålands Country Club. Som vanligt är det en komplett countrymusiktidning med artiklar, annonser och recensioner av folk som vet vad countrymusik innebär. Förutom Kountry Korral är det här den tidning som speglar "pure country music" på bästa sätt. (Ja, nu har vi även Gazetten). Kanske är tendensen att man övervärderar vissa CDs i recensioner och att alla recensioner är väldigt positiva. Tur att det finns lite motvikt till detta i mitt Nyhetsbrev. 2005 CMA Music Festival Breaks Attendance Records
Persistent showers from tropical storm Arlene didn't dampen the spirit of "Country Music's Biggest Party(tm) with a record 145,355 people
attending CMA Music Festival June 9-12 in Downtown Nashville.

Our fans are the most dedicated fans in the world," said CMA Executive Director Ed Benson. "They didn't let the weather spoil the fun. They were on their feet singing in the rain and dancing in the aisles until the very end."

Attendance at the Festival hit an all-time high. Single concert tickets at the Greased Lightning(r) Daytime Stages at Riverfront Park and the
Nightly Concerts at The Coliseum were up 38 percent. In fact, CMA opened the upper level of The Coliseum for the first time in four years to accommodate the demand for single concert tickets.

I see increased single concert ticket sales as an indication of increased local support and participation in the Music Festival," Benson
said. "Local companies and individuals are embracing this event as never before."

All available four-day ticket packages sold out, which represent a 16 percent increase over 2004. "We were able to put a few additional
four-days on sale, and as soon as these seats were made available, they were gone," Benson said of the demand for four-day packages. "We certainly could have sold more." And due to the increased demand, this year CMA is reallocating Coliseum seating to provide for more four-day ticket passes in 2006.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of hit songs came from strange circumstances and/or strange places. Such was the 1940’s hit tune,
“Have I Told You lately That I Love You.”

According to Scott Wiseman, he was a patient in Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois in 1944. During his several weeks there, his wife Lulu Belle visited him often and just before she left after one of her visits, she told Scott, “Have I told you lately that I love you?”

Scott commented, “After she left, I lay there just thinking about what she had said to me and decided that it was a good idea for a song. I found a pencil and some paper and wrote the first verse and the chorus that afternoon. Lulu came back to see me the next afternoon and I sang it to her. She thought it was a pretty good song. After it was finished, a friend of ours took a copy of the song to Gene Autry in Hollywood, California, and he made the first recording of the tune. She and I both feel a thrill each time we hear that song which has now been recorded by many fine artists. In fact that song paid for our retirement home in the North Carolina hills. It has sold over ten million records.

“Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” was a top ten hit for Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Foy Willing, Red Foley & Roy Ross---all in 1946. Red Foley and Kitty Wells scored a #74 hit on the song in 1969.

QUESTION: The radio guys were talking about some guy that wrote a hit song for George Jones having some program for children at The Ernest Tubb Theater. Do you know what that’s all about?

ANSWER: “The Countriest of the Country,” is an annual fundraising project for Christmas for the Children and held each year by songwriter Billy Yates, who penned George Jones’ hit “Choices.” The most recent was held June 8^th at The Ernest Tubb Texas Troubadoer Theater in Nashville, Tennessee.

QUESTION: Back in the 50’s there was a song on the radio by a guy about “Bloodshot Eyes.” Do you know his name and when that record came out?

ANSWER: “Bloodshot Eyes” was a # 4 hit for Hank Penny (Herbert Clayton Penny) in 1950. It was on the charts for 12 weeks. Penny died in 1992.

QUESTION: Several years ago there was a song on the radio about a man telling his son to stay away from Indians. Do you know the title of the song and the singers name?

ANSWER: “Don’t Go Near The Indians” was a # 4 hit for Rex Allen in 1962. It was charted for 13 weeks.

Buddy Jewel's wife gives him a new Harley Road King which he wanted very badly. This was obviously quite a surprise to him since she had forbidden him for years to even think about riding a motorcycle of any kind. Her statement in giving him the motorcycle was, "We've been together many years, he has worked very hard and he's earned the right to have the toys he wants and I love him too much to say no."

Two deaths at Bonnaroo. A record crowd of over 100,00 people turned out for the Bonnaroo music festival in Manchester, south of Nashville. Many different kinds of music including the Earl Scruggs review dazzled the crowds. Two deaths attributed to drugs marred an otherwise perfect musical weekend.

Rain dampens the CMA Music Fest. Several fronts passing through Tennessee drenched fans but the hardcore music fans huddled under ponchos and loved the music. I myself, was able to do my Fan Fair playing inside behind one of the more beautiful women in country music, an Irish lassie named Bernadette. She had the good taste to hire some of Nashville's finest players. I'm wishing her a great career as she seems to have more than enough talent, beauty, personality and business sense to make the whole thing work for her.

Upon catching many of the shows this weekend, it reminded me that we have many great steel players working in Nashville on a commercial full time basis who don't ever seem to get much credit for what they do. A few of them I would like to mention now and let's see how many of them you know. Jay Andrews, Jim Baker, Stu Basore, Tom Baughman, John Bechtel, Bruce Bouton, Tom Britt, Byrd Burton, Steve Byam, Glen Childress, Carco Claveria, Terry Crisp, Rusty Danmyer, Mike Douchette, Dan Dugmore, Ron Eliott, Pete Finney, Dan Galysh, Sonny Garrish, Eddie Gossien, Doyle Grissom, Rob Haines, Tommy Hannum, Randy Hess, Russ Hicks, Steven Hinson, Daryl Hornburger, Doug Jernigan, Mike Johnson, Mike Jones, Tommy Killen, Steve Larios, Gary Morse, Lynn Owsley, Russ Paul, Robin Ruddy, Tim Sergeant, Travis Toy, Randall Curry, Mike Sweeney, Chad Udeen and Bobbe Seymour. Whoops, that's when I woke up and there I was in Hillbilly Heaven!

These are a few of the superior players who seldom get the glory and recognition they have so deservedly earned for the behind the scenes work they do. There are many others and I'll mention more of them in future newsletters.

A reference was made by Mike Archer of Tennessee, about a new terminology that I really like and totally go along with. He referred to the great original players of the early 50's as "The Golden Players". I think this is a wonderful reference to the great playing crusaders who set the styles and raised the bar for all of us who followed. I have referred to many of these players in my past newsletters so most of you know who they are and a few of them are in the Hall Of Fame.

Typical golden players in my mind would be Joaquin Murphy, Noel Boggs, Speedy West, Bud Isaacs, Walter Haines, Curly Chalker and Jerry Byrd, probably the king of them all. He did so much with so little.

Then players expanded the boundaries, players like Hal Rugg, Weldon Myrick, Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Jimmy Crawford and Lloyd Green. These are but a few of the kings who took the original styles of the golden players to new levels. Remember, each generation has the privilege of standing on the shoulders of the previous generation. This is why steel guitar gets better and better every year.

Stellar players of todays era in my opinion would be players like Tommy White, Paul Franklin, Doug Jernigan, Randall Curry, Wayne Dahl. These are players who are setting the standards that will challenge future players.

Even though I was alive and well and playing steel guitar in this era, I tend to think of myself as a "copper player" but probably more of a "plywood player".

Taste, execution and quality of playing is something that seems to come with time in players of all instruments. This is why such classic players as Lloyd, Weldon, Buddy, John and Hal sound better as the years go by. Age does have it's merits. Remember Andre Sergovia? He kept improving his playing his entire life, as do most players. The taste in knowing what to play and what not to play are blessings that come with time and experience.

The new guys learn from the old guys and the old guys keep getting better. Is this a wonderful world or not?

Det blev lite körigt på söndagen så jag hann aldrig få iväg mitt Nyhetsbrev. Men den som väntar på någon gott….! Inte har jag heller fått ihop speciellt många nyheter åt er men lite blev det allt. Mats har haft vänligheten att sända info om Vindhemsturen. Det blir säkert fullt där så boka i god tid.

Enligt rapporter så var det trevligt i lördags på Sjöhästen, Stockholm och bluegrasskvällen Ralf Fredblad informerade om förra veckan. Trevligt ställe och mycket folk, vad kan man mer begära? Förhoppningsvis kommer vi att se fler countrygrupper där framöver.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Dolly Parton has written a song for Ralph Stanley. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Dolly Parton wrote the title song for Ralph Stanley’s new “Shine On” album—just released on Rebel Records.

QUESTION: I heard that Tom T. Hall is playing concerts at the hall of fame. Do you have any information on that?

ANSWER: Tom T. Hall will perform Aug. 3rd, 10th and 17th at the Country Music Hall Of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee as the museums artist in residence. Tickets will go on sale to the general public June 17.

QUESTION: Back in the 60’s there was a girl singer who had a record about “Don’t Buy A Used Car From Him.” Do you know her name and when that record came out?

ANSWER: “I Wouldn’t Buy A Used Car From Him” was Norma Jean’s 6^th chart single. It peaked at # 8 in 1965 and was on the charts for 14 weeks.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

According to Jimmy Rule, Hank Williams was the natural person to write a song titled “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

Rule commented, “Hank and I wrote a book together titled “How To Write Folk And Western Music To Sell.” I had met Hank in Nashville, Tennessee about three years before he died.

He and I were in the offices of Acuff Rose Music in Nashville one day and while we were talking, he handed me a piece of paper and asked me, “ Do you think people will understand what I’m trying to say in this song?”
”I read the lines, “Did you ever see a robin weep when leaves begin to die. It’s because they’ve lost the will to live. I’m so lonesome I could cry.”

Rule added, “Hank Williams had a lonesome streak in him and I think a lot of that had to do with his marital problems. I think that loneliness just stayed with him all the time and he just wrote what he felt. So he would be the natural person to write a song like, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

“I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” was the flipside of “My Bucket’s Got A Hole In It,” which entered the country music charts November 26^th, 1949 and peaked at number two. It was on the charts for 12 weeks.

Hello fellow players,
Remember the first car you ever owned? You'd park it near the window so you could always look out, admire it and make sure it was still there. Remember how much it inspired you to drive? I'll never forget my first Corvette. In 1963, I bought a white 1961 Corvette with red interior, 283, dual 4-barrels, 315 HP convertible with optional hardtop. I'll never forget the way it sounded, felt and smelled. I hated driving in the heavy traffic generally but with this car, I must have driven for 24 hours straight without stopping. I remember sleeping in it that night.

Over the past many years, when I got to the point where I really hated driving anywhere, I would get another car that would inspire me to get out into the traffic. Over the years I've had about everything possible to keep from hating driving. I've had Ferrari's, 4 Rolls Royce's, dozens of muscle cars, Shelby's, Cobra's, Lotus' and many different cars to try to rekindle my original love of driving.

As time went on and traffic got worse and I ended up having owned about everything there is, I found another love that has rekindled the early loves of my youth. Yes, steel guitars and music.

I don't care today about the latest things that are being manufactured because as I was loving and learning music and craving steel guitar, I was watching the original players play their Bigsby's, Permanent Sho-Bud's and early Emmons Push Pull guitars and wanting and craving all these things I could not afford. Listening to Buddy play on the early Ernest Tubb records on his Fender 1000 and his Standel tube amp created a magic that was indescribable. Seeing Buddy Charleton and Jimmy Day in the early 60's with their old Permanent Sho-Buds and Jimmy giving the Ray Price recordings the wonderful soulful feelings that they had, still echo in my mind today.

In trying to capture these old feelings, I have seen fit to buy an old Bigsby and a couple old Sho-Bud Permanent guitars and a Fender Dual Professional non-pedal guitar. I have set them up in my den and catch myself practicing and playing more than I have since I was in my teens. This is teaching me a lesson that what you play can be a very important inspiration to how much you play and how often you play. This can explain the tremendous resurgence in non-pedal guitar amongst some of the world's finest pedal players. The new MSA SuperSlide is also doing a lot to rekindle my loves and give me new found inspiration.

I am also seeing a trend toward very basic pedal setups and much more talk about bar slants and reverses, hence I have a video out covering this very subject. The steel player who isn't using slants and reverses is only playing half his guitar. I have found that playing non-pedals guitars in the last five years and my double 8 Permanent Sho-Bud with no knee levers, has made me a much better player on my double 10, 8-7 Emmons push pull workhorse.

Get that guitar that may be in the back corner of your mind. You know the one, the one or maybe two or three that may have inspired you to play when you were a youngster. It doesn't matter if it's a Silvertone 6 string lapsteel or a Fender 400. Buy it and put it in your house, admire it and play it like you wanted to when you were young. If there is nothing old in the corner of your mind, a beautiful new SuperSlide will definitely fill the inspirational bill. You won't catch me very far away from mine.

Perhaps you can get the inspiration from a variety of steel guitars that you never could from only one or perhaps you've always had a variety of guitars and never had a really good one. What I'm saying here is that mechanical things can inspire your creativity and desire to be better at what you do. It will give you much more pleasure in doing what you do and just like my '61 Corvette that I paid $2300 for, the steel guitars that you buy today will be worth much more money in the future. So technically, steel guitars will cost you nothing. Get what you want, it will make you a happier person, a better player and you'll have good investments.

If there is a guitar eating away at you in memory that you think would make you a better player, let me know with your name and email address and we'll put you on our "watch for" list. If you've only been a pedal player all your life, there's an awful lot of music to be played on a non-pedal lapsteel and it will fit in your car when you go on vacation.

On to another subject. I would like to salute the careers of Cal Sharp, Mike Fried and Steve Hinson.

Cal worked for Faron Young on the road for many years and has had a very good career in Nashville ever since. A nicer person and better player would be hard to find.

Mike Fried came to Nashville from California many years ago with Wylie and the Wild West Show, left Wylie to stay in town but accepted a very fruitful job with Gary Allen. Gary's career is doing very well as we all know and Mike and his double neck GFI Ultra are very prominent fixtures on Gary's road and television appearances.

Steve Hinson, steel guitarist with Randy Travis, is one of my very favorite lead guitar players. Having played steel on several shows that Steve was the lead guitar player on and having seen Steve work in Nashville on guitar for over 20 years, this guy's talent seems to know no boundaries. His studio career on steel guitar and lead guitar is doing well when Randy's work load permits him to stay in town. Steve has been on several of my own CDs playing lead guitar and personally, I was a little shocked to see him switch to steel guitar but was more than impressed at his ability to do so.

Let this be a lesson to all you lead guitar players who love steel guitar. You also may be able to follow in the footsteps of Steve Hinson with Randy Travis, Fred Newell with Porter Wagoner, Charlie Archer with Loretta Lynn and scores of other great players who are a double threat on both lead and steel guitars and have added greatly to their earning power.

In going to steel guitar and adding it to your repertoire, it's not necessary that you're coming from lead guitar because one of Nashville's finest horn players and big band arrangers, Mr. Jim Hoke took up steel guitar about a year ago and is an astounding player today. It doesn't matter what instrument you already play, the "slide" to steel guitar may be easier than you think. Keyboard players?

I'm being interrupted my Don Helms and his lovely wife, Hazel as I'm writing this. He's back to his grouchy old self, looking good and feeling good, or so he claims. It's great to have him back bothering me and being funnier than Rodney Dangerfield.

Midsommarafton!

Här kommer då äntligen mitt torsdagsnyhetsbrev! Har haft besvär med datorn i några dagar och inte kommit ut på nätet för att sända mina Nyhetsbrev. Hoppas att detta nu inte ska vara några problem i fortsättningen.

Värmen tycks ha kommit ordentligt till Stockholm och idag hittade hustrun och jag de första små kantarellerna. En härlig tid går vi till mötes.

I tisdags innan jag sände mitt Country, Country Music på Radio Lidingö 97,8 så åkte jag till Rudboda på Lidingö och en restaurang som heter Antica Trattoria. Jag åt där en vedungsbakad pizza som jag tror var det godaste jag ätit i Sverige någon gång. Åk ut till Lidingö och Antica vid tillfälle och prova denna läckerhet. Inte så billig men supergod! De använder bara Mozarellaost i sina pizzor, den klassiska buffelosten. Adressen dit är Grönbyvägen 1, Rudboda, Lidingö. Om ni som lyssnade på mitt program tyckte att jag lät lite slö i radion, så beror det på att jag var otroligt mätt efter den goda pizzan.

DAGENS ELVIS!
RADIO P4 UPPLAND!

Med anledning av 70-årsdagen så har Kent Wennman (Uppsalas största Elvis-nörd) och Patrik Hagberg på P4 Uppland botaniserat i Elvis
skivutgivningar. Varje dag, måndag-fredag kl. 11.45 blir det dagens Elvis.
Programserien startar 27:e JUNI och pågår i 7 veckor.

Första och sista programmet är 15 minuter långt. Alla andra 33 program är 1 låt+lite prat.

Programserien utgår från John Lennons berömda uttalande att Elvis dog redan när han åkte in i lumpen 1958. För att visa att John Lennon hade fel så startar programserien 1960 då Elvis kom tillbaka från lumpen.

Detta är alltså ingen "greatest hits"-program utan snarare en fördjupning och förhoppningsvis en eyeopener för de som fortfarande framhärdar i att Elvis bara var bra under femtiotalet.

ÅLANDS COUNTRYFESTIVAL 1-3 JULI

Välkomna till Ålands första stora Countryfestival nästa veckoslut. Tyvärr krockar den tidsmässigt i år med festivalen i Stockholm. Till nästa år försöker vi undvika detta. På vår festival kan ni se och höra Christina Lindberg Show, Ted Åström Show (Till minne av Jhonny Cash), The Annikas, åländska band.

I övrigt en mängd aktiviteter i dagarna 3. Marknad, dansuppvisning, hästridning, tävlingar av olika slag m.m.

I'm telling you this story because I'm sure if you don't relate directly to this one, you do have your own story that tugs at your heartstrings.

Many of us have lost friends and loved ones in our lives, but as we get older, it seems like all the close relationships that we have developed in our lifetime, come to a sad end when we get news one day that our great lifelong friend will not be calling us again or coming by and saying hello and that Christmas card that was always there will never be there again.

I made two of these friendships while in the United States Air Force. Naturally this was many years ago. One of these wonderful people whom I have called my friend since these days is a very successful, commercial Nashville steel guitar player today. The other one I lost 3 months ago. He left behind a legacy in steel guitar and was the inspiration to many young players, one of which, Steve Hinson, is playing with Randy Travis today.

I was asked to play a memorial steel guitar show in Macon, Georgia on behalf of this friend whose name is Frank Crawley. The memorial show was attended and played by some of the finest players in the world. Some of you are my mailing list and about all of you are on the steel guitar forum. I would like to say a special thanks to all of you who attended and a super special thanks to great old friends like Connie Burton, Roger Crawford, Don Lynch, Brett Day, Ernest Cawby, Joe Turner, Jerry Braswell, Herbie Wallace and Barney Miller.

I finally got to meet one of the greatest musicians and fiddle players in Georgia, the famous Ernest Jump, whom I had heard about for 50 years from Frank Crawley. Also, the band playing at the memorial show was beyond astounding. Wayne Smith on bass, Billy Puckett on guitar, Ernest Jump on fiddle and Ted on drums. I'm sorry I can't remember Ted's last name but I sure can remember how impressive his playing was.

To sum up, I would like to say that I feel that this is a wonderful way to honor one of our cherished comrades. What better than a steel guitar memorial show to recognize the talents of a great player and person. Most steel players are not the monetarily richest people in the world, and anytime that anything can be done for the families of the steel players, by other steel players, I feel is a wonderful gesture. Anytime anyone organizes a steel guitar benefit show for a fallen steel player's family, let me know and I will announce it here and attend myself, if possible. After all, all of us steel players are one big family and I don't mind being a good family member.

The family that Frank Crawley and his wife Sandy created is truly one of their greatest accomplishments. His children and grandchildren are all very impressive, intelligent and good looking folks. As great as his music career was, his greatest legacy is his family.

I just got off the phone with John Davis in merry old England concerning my September 18th clinic and show. I'm really looking forward to talking to each of my European steel guitar friends. I will be demonstrating some of my weird tricks and playing some of the tunes that are on each of my present 9 CDs. Anything anyone ever wanted to know about anything I've ever done in the past, will be revealed completely to the people who attend.

QUESTION: I heard that Johnny Cash’s drummer was receiving some kind of award. Do you know anything about that?

ANSWER: Johnny Cash's drummer for 40 years, W. S. Holland, will have a life-size oil portrait unveiled, honoring his contribution to music, during Awards Night on Thursday, August 4th as part of the Rockabilly Festival in the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson, Tennessee.

QUESTION: The radio folks were talking about Willie Nelson having something to do with cell stem research. What’s that all about?

ANSWER: The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas is planning to establish the Annie and Willie Nelson Professorship in Stem Cell Research. The couple are receiving the honor for helping to raise about $250,000 for the stem cell program at a recent concert in Grand Prairie, Texas. The school reportedly focuses on mouse stem cells to learn more about stem cells and "how their properties can be exploited to treat human diseases."

QUESTION: Several of us lovers of old music were recently talking about Danny Davis and The Nashville Brass. Someone mentioned that it was not his real name and that he had something to do with Connie Francis. Can you clear that up?

ANSWER: Danny Davis was actually George Nowlan from Dorchester, Massachusetts. He produced several Connie Francis recording sessions between 1962 and 1965.

QUESTION: The radio guys mentioned that this year’s Country Music Festival set an attendance record. Do you have any figures?

ANSWER: THE CMA reports that 145,355 people attended the 2005 CMA Music Festival in Nashville for the entire four-day event. All of the festival's four-day ticket packages sold out this year, representing a 16 percent increase over 2004. Single-day tickets to concerts increased 38 percent this year.

QUESTION: I heard that Loretta Lynn sold a pair of her shoes for $1200. What’s that all about?

ANSWER: During the recent “YWCA Celebrity Auction with Martina McBride,” which took place in downtown Nashville at the Hall of Fame Park during the CMA Music Festival, a pair of Loretta Lynn's high heels with hand-glued rhinestones sold for $1,200.The "YWCA All-Star Celebrity Auction" started 22 years ago and the auction has raised over $775,000.

QUESTION: I enjoyed watching a couple of characters on the old Ralph Emery TV show who called themselves “Sam & Son.” I believe they were from Texas. Do you know their real names and were they brothers?

ANSWER: The “brothers” were actually Samuel Morris Allred and Raymond Dewayne Smith, but they are not related.

Hello fellow players,
Stage fright. What is fear? Fear is the unknown. Fear can also be caused by having no understanding of the situation. When you get into something that you don't know if you will have control over or not, you can become fearful. The more confident you are in a situation, the less fear you will have. What scares pilots? Getting into a situation such as horribly turbulent weather and start questioning their ability whether they can handle the situation or not. What is a big thing that scares little children? It can be something as simple as darkness or not knowing what's under the bed when they go to sleep or what may be in the closet if they don't know. If you open the door for your child and show them there's nothing in the closet, the fear goes away.

These are all situations that you as adults already understand, so what is stage fright? And don't tell me you haven't felt pangs of this at some time in your career. I have. Lloyd Green has. And about everybody I know has. When there's a career move being auditioned for or you're in a situation that's very important that you do well, that you may not be prepared for, it would not be natural if you didn't feel some sort of stage fright.

I can remember Lloyd Green confiding in me that he got very nervous playing Scotty's International Steel Guitar Convention in the late 80's. My question to Lloyd was, "After being on thousands of recording sessions, how could you possibly get nervous playing something as simple as a live show?"

He replied, "I'm totally at ease in the studio amongst my friends and any mistakes made can be erased and you can punch in and end up with a perfect performance with no strain. When you're playing live in front of 2000 people and they're all concentrating on nothing but you, it is more of an unnerving proposition."

My first recording sessions in Nashville were extremely important to me. I put great pressure on myself to do well. I had spent most of my life reading the backs of albums that I had collected through my pre-teen and teen years and became very familiar with some of Nashville's greatest studio players such as Ray Eddington, Bob Moore, Pig Robbins, Grady Martin, Billy Sanford, Buddy Harmon and Charlie McCoy.

Suddenly there I was trying to break into sessions, walking into a studio full of people I'd heard about forever, the famous Nashville Rhythm Section. It would be like the local newly elected dog catcher being in a cabinet meeting with the President of the United States and his staff. Was I nervous? Yes. Was I prepared to be a full blown studio musician? I didn't feel prepared.

Preparation and knowing what was going to be happening would have made the process a lot less terrifying. Over a period of the next few years, these fears subsided and these guys turned out to be my great friends. Then gradually, I turned into one of the old guys and witnessed the new great players fighting their way into the studios. One day I woke up and said to myself, there are more challenges out there than just the studio. My store, playing live steel shows the world over and so on.

I played right before Doug Jernigan at the St. Louis show one Labor Day. My closing song was Orange Blossom Special. I played it what I thought was astoundingly well and better than I ever had. As I was clearing my steel from the stage, Doug was coming on and I leaned over to him and said, "Doug, don't play Orange Blossom Special, I just played it all up."

His reply was, "You just think you did! Wait til you hear what I do to it. Get out front and take your whippin'."

I thought this was a tremendous reply and it did show me how much confidence this great player had. Stage fright? I don't think Doug has ever known what stage fright is. But let's face it, this guy IS prepared.

This all goes back to the great tip of the week. Stage fright isn't fun. No kind of fright is. The way to eliminate stage fright is to be totally prepared and confident in your abilities to do the job well. This means practice, being well rested, have no drugs or excessive amounts of caffeine in your body, know your surroundings and fellow players. Good preparation will eliminate stage fright. Most of this boils down to being well practiced and knowing the material.

Så är då midsommarhelgen till ända och det vackra vädret fortsätter. Åtminstone är det fint i Stockholm då jag just suttit på vår fina gård och pratat med några grannar.

Carolina Åkerlind var hos mig i studion för några dagar sedan och gjorde några små kompletteringar på inspelningen med Bobby Flores.

Sista Country, Country Music innan semesteruppehållet sänder jag nu på tisdag på Radio Lidingö 97,8 och tiden är som vanligt 20.00 med repris på lördag kl. 15.00. Sedan blir det upphåll till i slutet av augusti. Bara så ni vet!

Krutstänket från Svenska Country Westernklubben dök just ned i brevlådan. Ordförande Christian Birgell gör ett jättjobb med spridandet av god countrymusik. I tidningen finns de flesta av sommarens countryfestivaler beskrivna, inte bara svenska, utan också från övriga Norden. Hemsidan heter www.birgell.just.nu

We're playing at The Massingshornet in Kirseberg--- This Friday (July 1st 21.00 to 0100) and Friday August 19, as well as on the streets of Malmo this Summer (see below.) Vera and I have been writing and recording lots of new material. Marlon Tepedino, a Venezuelan percussionist and guitarist, has joined up with us. Together we are 'The Offering'.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Country songs have spawned from strange situations and circumstances and the 1930’s hit
“It Makes No Difference,” was just such a song.

According to Floyd Tillman, he wrote the song while sitting in his car at a drive-in—waiting for a telephone call. When he finally decided the call was not coming, he told himself-“well it makes no difference now.”

Floyd added, “The minute I said that line--I started writing the song—the whole thing just started coming. I wrote it on the back of an envelope with a pencil I borrowed from a car hop. At the time I was working with the Blue Ridge Playboys in Houston, Texas and we had our own radio program. We did the song on the radio show and the audience reaction was great. I wanted to record the song but the Vocalion Records people said that the money in record sales were with juke boxes and that jukebox operators only wanted up-tempo songs. So they turned the song down.”

“Cliff Bruner recorded the song and had a hit record. I sold the song for a few hundred dollars but I got the rights to the song back when the copyright was renewed in 1966.”

“It Makes No Difference Now” has been recorded over a hundreds times by various artists.

My favorite version is by Carl Smith in his “Kisses Don’t Lie” album.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Porter Wagoner was doing something at the hall of fame. What’s that all about?

ANSWER: Porter Wagoner memorabilia will be on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum beginning July 15, and will include his first guitar (ordered by his mother from a Montgomery Ward catalog), a Grammy and stage wear designed by both Nudie Cohn and Manuel. Wagoner was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002.

QUESTION: The TV news said that Jerry Lee Lewis had another divorce. How many does that make?

ANSWER: A Mississippi judge recently approved a divorce settlement between Jerry Lee Lewis and his sixth wife, Kerrie Lynn McCarver Lewis. The couple was married on April 24, 1984 and lived together on his 40-acre ranch near Nesbit, just south of Memphis. Kerrie will reportedly receive $250,000 immediately and $30,000 year for five years. Jerry Lee will also pay $20,000 a year child support for the next four years for the couple’s son.

QUESTION: What was the name of the singer who ad the record “Fraulein” back in the 50’s and whatever happened to him?

ANSWER: Bobby Helms had a number one with “Fraulein” in 1957. He died in 1997.

QUESTION: I heard something on the radio about a film made in Saginaw, Michigan about the song by that title. I didn’t understand what they were talking about. Can you explain?

ANSWER: Residents of the city singing about "Saginaw, Michigan" will be included along with other towns, in a CMT special, “20 Greatest City Songs,” scheduled to air in August. The special will also include music videos, archival performances and stories about the songs and the cities that inspired them. In addition to Saginaw, Michigan, TV crews are scheduled to visit Montgomery, Ala., for the song "Midnight in Montgomery"; Muskogee, Okla., for "Okie From Muskogee"; Bakersfield, Calif., for "Streets of Bakersfield"; and Luckenbach, Texas for "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)."

QUESTION: I have heard that June Carter Cash’s daughter is doing some kind of tribute program to her mother. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Carlene Carter will star in “Wildwood Flowers,” a musical based on the life of her mother, June Carter Cash, July 13-31, in Nashville, Tennessee.

QUESTION: Who was the group of singers that had a record about tip toeing around the baby—or something like that –back in the 60’s.

ANSWER: “Tippy Toeing” was a number two hit in 1966 for The Harden Trio—which was Bobby and his two sisters Robbie and Arlene. It was on the charts for twenty one weeks.

Tragic news. Steel guitar players the world over have lost a friend and fan. The great singer and bandleader, Mr. Ron Sweet, famous for his days working with stars on the road out of Nashville and heading up the band locally at Gabe's Lounge. His excellent bass playing, singing, fronting and band leading will be dearly missed by his fellow musicians and fans alike. It's a shame I'll never get to hear him sing "I Never Go Around Mirrors" again. I loved to hear him sing it so I could play it as much as he loved to sing it so he could hear me play it.

I veckan som gått har jag varit på inspelningar hos Martin Klaman och även hos Fredrik Jonsson. Bägge producerar typ svensktoppsband. Fredrik jobbade just med en julplatta! Just det, inte juliplatta utan julplatta. Men jag hörde t o m en julsång på Radio Lidingö i tisdags så det är tydligen något på gång??? Är det jag eller tiden som är ur led?

Nåväl, det får vara som det vill med det. Det ska bli skönt att vila från mina radioprogram ett tag. Hoppas att ni har det skönt därute i hängmattan! Vi hörs på söndag om allt flyter på som det ska.
