Tack för ditt nyhets mail alltid lika glatt att lösa vad andra skriver och om vad som händer i vårat avlånga land. Då jag har hållit på med en ny sida på www.swedencountry.com ett tag nu. Men nu kan jag meddela att den är klar och om den ska bli något så är det lyssnarna och dom som älskar country music som ska fylla den. Det är en Webcalender där vem som helst kan lägga upp information om när och var det är arangemang eller om det är någon artist som släpper en ny cd skiva eller något liknande. man kan även skapa sig ett konto efter att man har klickat på logga ut längst upp på höger sida, då kan man ha sina adresser och sin egen kalender allt är krypterat så det är bara den som har konto som kan se sin Kalender eller så kan man skriva in i den almänna då vem som helst kan se det.

man går in på www.swedencountry.com klickar på Links då får man fram en meny som det står webcalender klicka på den då startar web kalendern. Hoppas ni har nytta utav den och jag hoppas det skrivs in många arangemang.

Hej Janne!
Det är fredag den 1/7 och jag laddar nu för kvällens show på Gröna Lunds stora scen -"En hyllning till Elvis". Om ca fem timmar blir man kompad av självaste James Burton, vi repade i går och det var en kick, det kan jag lova! Burton funkar som bandleader och styr upp mycket i kompet och spelar själv alla solon - så läckert! Billy Swahn var med, och båda är härligt positiva killar (eller snarare "gubbar" vid det här laget).
Jag skriver dock främst för att påminna om måndagskvällens - den 4 juli - båttur med M/S Vindhem - avgång från Slussen kl 19.00.
Hoppas vi ses - gäller alla som läser detta!

Dessvärre hann jag inte få med ditt meddelande om Gröna Lund i mitt förra Nyhetsbrev, då jag läste ditt mail först idag på morgonen (lördag) men vad jag minns har du skrivit om det tidigare så jag hoppas det gick fram och att det kom mycket folk! Det är jättebra att få direktinformation från band, men ibland verkar det som om arrangörer och band inte vill ha folk på sin tillställningar! Konstigt tycker jag! Mats, du är ett föredöme! JL.

Ni har väl inte missat Jesper Högströms artiklar "Amerikanska Rötter" i Expressen med början den 21 juni. Jesper har beskrivit countrymusikens rötter på ett fint sätt och den första artikeln heter "Hem Till Carters", den andra "Gräset Blånar" varav den senare handlar om gräsrötterna i North Carolina. Bägge artiklarna är på hela två sidor och väldigt bra skrivet. Jesper vet vad det handlar om. Jag ser fram mot nästa artikel. JL.

Var på Grönan och Lida i helgen och upplevde Elvisdagen samt lite countrymusik på Llida.

Elvisdagen:

Fick höra James Burton och lite blandade Elvislåtar med alldeles för hög bas och ljudnivå. Tyvärr. Kopplingen till Elvis var bitvis åxå rätt tunn tycker jag.

Country på Lida:

Men, faktiskt trots lite hög ljudvolym även här, lät det hyggligt av det vi lyssnade på. Hyggliga låtar med kvinnliga sångare och naturligtvis Rankarna som numera oftast kör sin standardreportoar men gör det proffsigt och bra. Pga elproblem var vissa uppträdanden kortade.

Det blev en kort beskrivning men jag vill framförallt

tacka dig för Nyhetsbreven

under våren och

önska en riktigt trevlig sommar. Hoppas du orkar hålla på ett tag till.

Jag kommer att kolla mailen mer sporadiskt under sommaren då vi är på landet.

Med tanke på de problem jag tidigare hade med en journalist i Örebro så kan jag inte kopiera in artiklar i mina Nyhetsbrev utan tillstånd. Men den som vill kan självklart gå in och titta på vad som är skrivet genom att gå in på webbadressen. JL.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Ralph Stanley was seriously ill. Do you know anything about that?

ANSWER: Ralph Stanley underwent successful heart bypass surgery last Monday. According to his publicist, everything went well and he is expected to make a full recovery. Doctors recommended the operation after the 78-year-old singer went for a regular checkup last week.

QUESTION: The radio guys said that Ronnie Milsap is back recording for RCA Victor Records. Is that true?

ANSWER: Ronnie Milsap is scheduled to record an album of new material for RCA Records this fall, with a radio single expected in the spring. Milsap scored 35 No.1 hits for RCA between 1974 and 1989.

QUESTION: My uncle used to sing a song about “Love Sure Is Beautiful.” He said it as a Johnny Paycheck record on the radio back in the 70’s. Do you know anything about that record?

ANSWER: “Love Sure Is Beautiful” was the flipside of Paycheck’s 1972 number 4 hit, “Someone To Give My love To.”

Hello fellow players,
A few years ago, while walking down lower Broadway, in Nashville, with two of the most famous steel guitarists in the world, I was amused at the fact that no one knew who these great talents were. One of them looked at the other one and exclaimed in humor, "Look at these people. Don't they know who we are? Don't they know that we are the most famous steel guitar players in the world?"

We all laughed but also saw the irony in the situation. Steel guitarists spend a lifetime honing their craft only to be relegated to the position of sideman while the kids just out of high school get major label artist deals based on how cute and photogenic they are. Let's face it, with the digital recording technologies of today, any vocalist can sound great.

The little worlds that we build for ourselves and live in, the loves we have, the things we don't like, the choices we make in life and the material objects we surround ourselves with constitute our personal world. As important as steel guitar is to us, isn't it shocking that so many people don't even know what a steel guitar is? Ever walk down the street and see the throngs of people and just think to yourself that none of them know who Buddy Emmons is and many of them don't even know what country music is? They are definitely living in a different world, a different world that they built for themselves.

The criteria that we all personally have for building our own little world that we live in, varies dramatically between people. This newsletter goes out to thousands of people who love music and steel guitar. This is the common thread that ties our individual worlds together. Let's hold on to this common thread and pull together to promote steel guitar.

Actors become famous through promotion, singers become famous through promotion. Steel guitar will thrive through promotion, through the promotion and love that we as a group give it. Be an ambassador for steel guitar and spread the word.

I'm not saying be obnoxious about it. Have tolerance for other people's preferences while exposing them to yours.

Steel guitarists, along with all talented musicians, will always remain and continue because of the skill, talent and musical ability they have. They have the ability to create, perform and entertain. Singers whose careers are manufactured by the publicity departments of the major labels, will come and go quickly, replaced by the next graduating class of high schoolers. The reason musicians survive much longer than artists is because of the skill they have to create rather than imitate and that is something that no publicity department can manufacture.

How many of you have worked with a new young "star" singer who didn't know what pickup notes were, didn't know what a 5511 intro was and couldn't play any instrument at all? And my pet peeve, the girl singer who claps her hands while holding the microphone just before the cell phone in her bra goes off. Maybe they talk all the way through your instrumental turn-around and then turn their backs on the audience between songs while they're trying to figure out what to do next.

To get by as a musician, you have to know your craft. This will insure your lifetime staying power. Still, it would be nice if they all knew who Buddy Emmons was.

Det här är ett kul ämne som Bobbe tar upp i veckobrevet. Ingen känner igen Buddy Emmons eller ens Lloyd Green då de promenerar på gatorna i Nashville. Trots det faktum att de här grabbarna varit med på tusentals sessions under sina karriärer. Lloyd var under en tid USAs mesta studiomusiker. Bara vi som är i steelbranschen skulle känna igen dem om vi mötte dem. Men vi gör en liten jämförelse hur läget är här i Sverige. Jag kan ta mig själv som exempel: Jag har spelat på ca 5.000 låtar av olika slag från Vikingarna och Lasse Stefanz till Gunnar Wiklund, Annlouise och Low Budget Blues Band bara för att nämna några få. Jag har även varit musikant i åtskilliga TV-program under åren. Men trots detta så känner inte en människa igen mig på gatan. Självklart kan jag inte jämföra mig med supermusikanter som Buddy och Lloyd, men vi lever ändå i lilla Sverige. Inte ens en del artister känner igen mig, trots att jag kanske spelat på hela deras produktion. Vanliga människor tycks inte ens titta på musikantlistan på plattor de köper, vilket jag tycker är mycket konstigt. Men det här har vi musikanter vant oss vid och åtminstone tycker jag själv att det är ganska skönt att vara anonym för den breda massan. Jag tror att Lloyd och Buddy tycker detsamma!

Ha en fin vecka så hörs vi på torsdag igen!

Hej i värmen! Hoppas allt är bra och att ni solat er ordentligt! Själv har jag varit på filmuppdrag flygande i en gammal DC-3a från Bromma och över Stockholms Skärgård. Vilken fantastisk flygtur på ca. 300 meters höjd rakt över Stockholms innerstad och vidare ut över Saltsjöbaden och vidare till Sandhamn. Där vände planet och flög ungefär samma väg tillbaka. Oj, vilken upplevelse! Om det blev bra bilder? Inte vet jag, filmen lämnade jag direkt till beställaren. Senare på kvällen var jag med i ett filmteam ute vid Grand Hotel i Saltsjöbaden och filmade Rockfolket. Ovanligt att stå på scenen med en filmkamera istället för att spela steel.

Igår hade jag celebert besök i min studio i källaren. Washboard Wilma och Dottie var på besök och vi gjorde lite reklamvideo och en inspelning för demo. Om någon trodde att jag som pensionär skulle bara sitta och vila mig i min gungstol så trodde ni allt fel.

Vill bara påminna dig om att du visst blir igenkänd på stan! Detta var om mitt minne ej sviker mig helt, cirka 1971, jag var 17 år och skulle kolla in vad det fanns för skivor på musikavdelningen på nedre planet på Åhléns i Stockholm! Jag snabbade mig fram mot disken där Countryskivorna fanns, skummade igenom skivställen, och fick syn på en skum figur med en omiss-igenkännlig mustasch...... Fan!!!! är inte det Janne Lindgren som står där och kollar in plattor???? Jomenvisst!! Jag smyger framåt så att jag kan kanske få tillfälle att säga något till honom!! Det bästa jag kunde få fram var att, "Har du inte steelen med dig"!!!!!! Oj va dum jag kände mig när jag sagt detta! Janne svarade, "Om den hade varit lite lättare så hade jag nog haft den med mig"

Jag köpte sen 1974 min första steel av Janne. Det var en AWH. Den första i Sverige serietillverkade Steelguitaren! Det var en härlig tid!

Så Janne du har visst blivit igenkänd på stan:-)

För att få med ett tredje nordiskt land så bjuder jag generöst på fest-tips från Norge, där jag varit mer än en vecka och härjat.

Där firar man i bästa nordiska gemenskap midsommarafton dubbelt i två dagar, först den riktiga dagen, den norska, sedan den till lördagen flyttade svenska midsommaraftonen. Så det var att sitta i solen på olika vackra norska bergssluttningar och grill-fira midsommarafton hos glada vänner två dagar i följd. Anar att näsan visar att jag varit i solen, så det är väl bara att titta på bilar som närmar sig så stannar dom. Annars är jag säkerhetsutrustad med egen airbag, tur att man inte är tjej och måste ha bikinifigur ;-)
För jämviktens skull, väster-öster, ev även pga airbagen ... blir det Gotland 2 veckor nu.

Al Downing 1940-2005

Entertainer Big Al Downing Passes Away July 4

Nashville, TN (July 5, 2005) -- Big Al Downing died Monday, July 4, at approximately 6:45 p.m. with his family at his side. The legendary country-soul entertainer, hospitalized last week with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, was 65. He leaves behind his wife of 27 years, Beverly; four step-sons, Michael Melanson of Hyannis, MA; Peter Melanson of Oakam, MA; Steven Melanson of New Hampshire; Jeffrey Melanson of Leicester, MA; five brothers, Donald Downing of Oxonhill, MD; Clay, Marvin and Sylvester Downing of Coffeeville, KS, and James Downing of Sand Springs, OK; five grandchildren, Kara Hazelton; David, Jacki, Lindsey and Alyssa Melanson. He is pre- deceased by six brothers and two sisters.

A member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Downing began his five-decade career as the keyboard player in Wanda Jackson's "Let's Have A Party" band. As a solo performer, he enjoyed success as a songwriter, musician and entertainer. His songs were recorded by Fats Domino, Bobby Blue Bland, Tom Jones and most currently, Webb Wilder. A recipient of Billboard's New Artist of the Year and Single of the Year in 1979, his lengthy career is a testament to his many talents. In 2003, he released the critically-acclaimed CD, ONE OF A KIND, and was recording tracks for an upcoming project when illness overcame him.

Al's most recent public performance was on the Grand Ole Opry in May, where he performed one of his biggest hits, "Mr. Jones," for an appreciative crowd. Also known for his releases, "Down On The Farm," and "Touch Me," Downing's impact on the country genre is far-reaching, and his music - and big heart - touched millions. "The rewards," he once said of his career, "have been many."

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that some music publishing company was leaving the old Bradley building in Nashville. Is that what was known as The Bradley Barn? Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Sony Music has been operating out of a property they purchased from Harold and Owen Bradley, know as the old Quonset Hut studio. Recording sessions for Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Buddy Holly, George Jones and many more were done in that building. Sony Music is now moving into the offices of the RCA Label Group.

In 1965, Owen Bradley converted a Mount Juliet, Tennessee barn into another studio-which became known as “Bradley’s Barn.”

QUESTION: A few days ago you mentioned that Ralph Stanley underwent heart surgery. Do you know how he’s doing?

ANSWER: Ralph Stanley went home Thursday June 30th, following triple bypass surgery on Monday. According to his family, he is eating well and walking a lot.

QUESTION: One of my aunts has been trying to remember the name of the lady who had a record many years ago about “Squeeze Me And I Rattle.” My mom says the title of the song was “Teddy Bear” but can’t remember the singers name. Do you know?

ANSWER: I think your aunt is referring to “Shake Me I Rattle, Squeeze Me I Cry,” which was a # 14 hit for Marion Worth (real name: Mary Ann Ward) in 1963.

“Teddy Bear Song was a # 1 for Barbara Fairchild” in 1972.

QUESTION: The radio folks mentioned that Hank Williams daughter gave a Hank statue to The White House. What’s that all about?

ANSWER: Hank Williams’’ daughter, Jett Williams, recently presented a bronze statuette commemorating her dad, to President George Bush at The White House. The statuette was one of only 29 such bronze statuettes commemorating Hank Williams Sr.

QUESTION: I heard that George Strait recently recorded some old Merle Haggard songs. Is that true?

ANSWER: George Strait’s 33^rd album, “Somewhere Down In Texas,” contains “The Seashores Of Old Mexico,” which was originally written and recorded on the 1974 release “Merle Haggard Presents His 30^th Album.”

QUESTION: I didn’t understand the story but our local radio dude mentioned that Brooks and Dunn were supposed to play a show in Oklahoma many years ago with Hank Locklin but something happened to the show and the duo kept the contract all these years. What was that all about?

ANSWER: When he was a youngster, Ronnie Dunn was booked to open a show for Hank Locklin at Cains’ Ballroom in Oklahoma. The show was cancelled, but Ronnie kept a copy of the contract all these years.

QUESTION: I heard that they’re taking the Grand Ole Opry on the road. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: "An Evening With The Grand Ole Opry,” is scheduled for on the road concerts, featuring Patty Loveless, the Del McCoury Band, Craig Morgan, Riders In The Sky, Ricky Skaggs and Marty Stuart. The tour stage includes a version of the Opry’s signature barn backdrop, microphone stands and an Opry announcer. To see when the show will be in your area, log on to Opry.com.

QUESTION: The radio folks were talking about the album from the new “Dukes Of Hazzard” movie. Does it contain the Waylon Jennings theme song from the old TV series?

ANSWER: “The Dukes Of Hazzard” soundtrack is set for July 19^th release and contains the original theme song—recorded by Willie Nelson—not Waylon Jennings. The original 1981 soundtrack has also been re-issued. The film will open on August 5^th and stars Jessica Simpson as Daisy Duke, Sean William Scott as Bo Duke, Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg, Johnny Knoxville as Luke Duke, and Willie Nelson as Uncle Jessie.

QUESTION: My cousin used to sing a song about “putting two dollars in the jukebox.” He said it was a hit record for some singer named “Rabbit.” But my mom says that Eddie Rabbitt never had any hit records. Was there another singer named Rabbitt?

ANSWER: Your mother is slightly incorrect. “Two Dollars In The Jukebox” was a # three hit for Eddie Rabbitt in 1976. Eddie placed 43 songs on the country music charts between 1974 and 1991.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

According to songwriter Kye Fleming, she and co-writer Dennis Morgan knew that their song,
“I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” would either be a big joke or a big record. Fortunately, the song was not a joke-and became a number one single for Barbara Mandrell on July 4^th, 1981.

Fleming said, “I had the song idea written in my note book for about two weeks before I mentioned to my co-writer, Dennis Morgan. And when I first mentioned it to him and record producer Tom Collins, neither of them liked the idea. It took me a few weeks to sell them on the song idea. And the idea was a little scary to write-because we knew the song could turn out to be a big joke or a big record!”

Kye and Dennis went to California during Christmas 1980 and played several songs for Barbara Mandrell-who was working on her television show at the time. Barbara immediately liked “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.” The tune wound up as the feature track for “Barbara Mandrell Live,” which was recorded live on June 7^th, 1981 at The Roy Acuff Theater at Opryland in Nashville. However the single was recorded in studio and released on April 16^th. The MCA Records single was already on the country charts when the album was recorded. Producer Tom Collins found some old crowd noise tapes and added them to the track to make it sound like a live recording for the album.

“I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” was written by Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan and produced by Tom Collins.

It entered the country music charts May 9^th, 1981 and was country music’s top single on July 4^th. It was Mandrell’s 34^th charted single and was on the country charts for 13 weeks.

Just think about who'll be watching you!

Now on to another of my pet peeves. Fans who judge your musical ability by who you work with instead of how you play. How many times do I have to say it? They shouldn't judge a steel players ability by who he works with. And fans are not always the only ones guilty of this as I've seen a lot of steel players do this as well.

Ever notice how some steel players are famous only because of who they work for and not for how well they play? We all know there are some incredible musicians working the road with stars and playing sessions who deserve all the credit they can get. But a steel player can become a household name overnight because he does a tour across the country with a big name star and even if he never gets another tour, his "legend" status has been established and lives on, whether he deserves it or not.

Ever hear this old phrase? Ole so and so has to be good, he's worked with the biggest names in the business!

Well, how about the steel player who has never worked with anybody famous but has made himself a name by climbing to the top of the steel guitar fame list because of his own incredible talents and abilities?

I have been asked many times by strangers who don't know me, "Oh, you play steel guitar, huh? Who have you worked with?"

Yeah this kind of hacks me off, so I usually retort with, "I don't have to work with anybody, I work with myself, singers work with me." Of course, I'm being haughty and rude by saying this but I'm trying to drive the point home that I don't want my abilities judged by whichever singer I'm backing.

They don't measure a singer's ability by who plays steel guitar for them and as a steel guitar player, I don't appreciate my ability being measured by the singer I play for.

I think of great players who have done so well by themselves without being such and such a star's steel player. Some of the craftsmen I think of when I think of self-made men are Jerry Byrd, Maurice Anderson, Tom Morrell, Stu Basore, Ron Elliott, Noel Boggs, Randy Beavers, Joaquin Murphy, Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green and the unforgettable Jeff Newman. Most of these illustrious gentlemen are known to have played with many stars, but who they played with did not make them famous, how they played made them famous.

This also applies to other musicians, for instance, lead guitar players like Howard Roberts, Johnny Smith, Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel, Chet Atkins, Joe Maphis and Duane Eddy. These are all players who made it on their own, not because of who they worked with.

I have had steel players walk into my store and say things like, "Hi, I'm Johnny Rodriquez's steel player." And I always ask, "Don't you have a name of your own?"

There are times I'll have several country music fans in my store and a great player will walk in and I'll say, "Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to one of the finest steel players in the world, (for example) Mr. Weldon Myrick."

Inevitably someone will ask, "Who does he work with?" My grinning answer to that question is, "Who cares who he works with? He's an incredible steel guitarist, the guy he works for can't play a lick of steel."

See the point I'm making guys? If a steel player or any musician for that matter, is famous or even just well known, he should be famous because of his playing ability, not because he worked with some big famous star. Wouldn't it be a great world if more fans recognized this?

Idag har vi repeterat med Country Minstrels och det var varmt och kul! Alla i bandet kom väl förberedda och hade tittat på repertoaren och det innebär fullt sväng i Ransäter nu på lördag den 16 juli. Minstrels spelar upp till dans den kvällen. Det blir en honky tonkkväll ni sent kommer att glömma med Carolina och Christer som sångare. Har ni ingen möjlighet att komma till Ransäter i veckan som kommer så åker ni förstås till Vemdalen den 13 augusti eller till Knutby den 20 augusti. Vi ses där!

På torsdag jobbar jag med Kent Wennman i Möklinta med One Night With The King. Det är alltså inte Kent det handlar om utan Elvis. Se nedan!

Sensationellt nog gick George Strait direkt upp på amerikanska Billboardlistan www.billboard.com med sin nya Somewhere Down In Texas. CDn med samma namn är hans 33:dje och är man en riktig countryälskare bör man äga åtminstone 15 – 20 av Straits plattor. Helst alla!

Tack så mycket för senast, det var jättetrevligt att träffas och spela lite och äta tårta,både jag och Wilma har lagt ut små smakprov på våra
hemsidor. Jag kommer att skicka dej dom på dvd-skiva i veckan. Du förgyllde verkligen min låt och spelade så himla fint och mer än en så behövs det ju inte jämnt.

Ibland är det nästan mer feeling utan så mycket dunka dunka,men det är ju kul att variera sej med det med ibland.

En steelpicker med namn Bill McCummins ringde mig och berättade att han var i Stockholm över helgen. Han kom från Corpus Christi och var på semester i Norden. JL.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

According to Roy Acuff, “The Great Speckled Bird” was his ticket to The Grand Ole Opry and to his career in country music.

Roy commented, “A group of singers called The Black Shirts sang that song on the radio back in the 1930’s. That’s when I first heard the song and I took a liking to it and started singing it. When I first started singing the song, I had no idea who had written it-but later I was told that a Carolina minister named Guy Smith had originally written the tune. A lot of people think that I made it to The Grand Ole Opry with my fiddle-but that’s wrong. “The Great Speckled Bird” got me on The Grand Ole Opry. I had been trying to get on the Opry for five years when I finally got the chance. Back in those days The Opry didn’t care if you were recording or what you were doing. The only thing that got you on the Opry was showmanship---pure and simple. You had to have something to show and be able to prove it o that stage. My first night on the Opry- I played my fiddle but I also sang “The Great Speckled Bird.” The audience stood up and cheered and they just kept on cheering. That night they brought me back on stage three times and I got a standing ovation. The Opry management people told me that had never happened before. After the show that night, I went back home to Knoxville and I still didn’t not know if I had made the Opry. Then the Opry started shipping me bushels of mail that had come in for me from the fans. And two weeks later, they called me and offered me a regular spot on The Opry. So “The Great Speckled Bird” brought Roy Acuff to The Grand Ole Opry!”

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Elvis Presley was still the biggest seller of albums. Do you have any details?

ANSWER: The Recording Industry Association of America recently announced their updated listing of top selling music artists in the U.S. The Beatles top the list with album sales of 168.5 million, Elvis Presley was #2 with album sales of 116.5 million.

QUESTION: Our radio guys said that Dolly Parton is recording with the new guy Keith Urban. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Keith Urban is a guest artist on Dolly Parton’s next album, which will be titled "Those Were The Days.”

QUESTION: I heard that Ronnie Milsap is into something called “The Tennessee Run.” What’s that all about?

ANSWER: Darryl Worley's fourth annual Tennessee River Run is set for September 16^th & 17th at Pickwick Landing State Park in Hardin County, Tennessee and will feature performances by Ronnie Milsap, Jamie O'Neal, Hot Apple Pie and the Stevens Sisters. Other activities include a golf tournament, fishing tournament, 5K run, silent auction and an arts and craft fair. Last year's event raised more than $100,000 for various projects, including the establishment of for an outpatient chemotherapy clinic at Hardin Medical Center.

After last weeks tips went out about players being known for who they work with instead of for their own personal accomplishments, I received hundreds of replies stating how they agreed and about 3 with a little different viewpoint.

An email that I got expressing this different viewpoint is below:

Bobbe,
I am not one for inserting my 2 cents worth, but you struck a chord with me on this issue of recognition. I am in the ranks of the never heard, and never noticed. I am not a great player as I will never be heard playing behind some super star. That's ok though. This is not what I play steel for. After working for weeks or even months to perfect a new hot lick, or a solo for a new tune, the most exposure I will ever get is playing at a neighborhood bar jam playing for drinks on Friday night. This is ok. I play simply for the shear pleasure of playing. It is the sound and the music. It is the constantly striving to master the instrument and improve my playing. For me and hundreds or thousands like me, this is what it is all about. I may go for months listening to myself play alone when no one else can hear me, but this is also ok. It all comes together when friends get together to make some music on Friday, or Saturday night. Anytime someone calls me and says "lets get together tonight and make some music", well I am ready. I am not the greatest steel player in the world, but if "he who is the greatest" heard me play, I honestly believe he would enjoy my playing. This is enough for me.

This just knocked me out!

Tuesday, we had our first annual SuperSlide steel guitar show featuring myself and Maurice Anderson and it was a success beyond what I could ever have hoped for. There were hundreds of things that could have gone wrong, from weather to no one showing up. But of these hundreds of things that could have gone wrong, none of them did.

The show was a resounding success. Maurice Anderson played so smoothly that his monstrous, complex chords and incredible style on his chromatic 12-string SuperSlide held those in attendance spellbound. I had to pull out every trick in the book including my Travis style to be sure the audience knew I was there!

I was presented a double eight SuperSlide just before show time and got it tuned just in time to do my 5 hour onstage stint. It was beautiful, I loved it and I still do, the sound and feel of these instruments makes me a new fan every time I hear or play it. Everything that I hoped for that would make this uniquely original steel guitar jam successful fell right into place. The band showed up and played extremely well. The audience was a Who's Who of steel guitar, as well you might expect in Nashville Tennessee and everything was recorded by a professional camera crew.

The response we got from Nashville's elite was very much appreciated. Everyone in attendance raved. I'm still getting telephone calls telling me how wonderful the show was.

It appears as though Maurice and I may to have to take our act on the road. As he said, "With ten minutes of rehearsal, we could be dangerous."

My reply was, "With ten minutes of tuning. I could be dangerous on my own."

For the two of you who didn't come to the show, a video will be coming to a theater near you!

Äntligen lite svalare i Stockholm och jag slipper gömma mig i min källarstudio hela dagarna. Å andra sidan trivs jag väldigt fint därnere.

Idag åker jag till Möklinta för att medverka i A Night With The King. Är ni i närheten så kom dit och kolla in showen. Kanske inte så mycket country, men stundtals får ni åtminstone höra lite pedal steel guitar.

Jag vill påssa på i sommarvärmen att påminna alla om den 3:e upplagan av

LONESOME PINE COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL som går av stapeln i Lysvik den 5-6 augusti.

Många tycker säkert det låter knäppt att det vissa år krockar vår festival med Furuvik, men här i Värmland får man vara rädd om en helg som inte krockar med andra stora arrangemang!

Vi har i år Live musik på 3 scener, En stor Line Dance lada med föreningen Double Trouble som kör Line dance hela helgen, Saloon, western ridning och en nyhet för i år är en Indianby för alla barnfamiljer.

Där kommer vi att anordna aktiviteter som Lassokastning, Pilbågsskytte, Indianhantverk, korvgrillning mm.

OBS ALLT ÄR GRATIS FÖR BARN UPP TILL 12ÅR!

Årets artister är: Buckey från Texas USA, Inger Nordström, The Wanted, Tenneesse drifters, Crossing Keys, Downhill, Lee Marvelous, Hillfillies och succé bandet från "Ultimate Country Cruise" Blue Valley Boys. mfl. Totalt 19 band kör Country från ett otalt olika stilar!!

Så tanka upp kärran och styr den mot Lysvik 5-6/8. Vi har två Campingområden i anslutning till festival området. (Familje & Party camping) 100kr för tält och 250kr för husvagn hela helgen.

Mina synpunkter på countryarrangemang grundar sig helt på vad jag själv upplever och oftast då i samband med att jag spelar på respektive ställe. Jag skriver annars sällan själv om olika festivaler och i tidigare Nyhetsbrev har jag rekommenderat de som är intresserade av festivaler att besöka countryklubbarnas hemsidor och www.vingar.se Däremot är det fritt fram för läsarna själva att ge synpunkter på arrangemang och annat till Nyhetsbrevet. I read in this newsletter about a good and unexpensive motel called "Midway Motel" Is it the one out on Murfreesboro Road? And what is the price per week? I will be staying in Nashville 30 days in next month August for lessons on piano, pedal steel guitar and lap steel guitar etc etc. After that 3 weeks in St. Louis. Returning home to Denmark on September the 20.
It could be fun meeting with you in Nashville.

For 7.år I træk står Country Truckstop Danmark som arrangør af Danmarks
hyggeligste country/trucker festival i dagene 29. - 31. juli. Arrangementet
foregår som vanligt på Danmarks Transport Center (DTC) i Vejle.

Det bliver 3 dage med dyt og båt samt vrinskende country musik. Forkromede
trucks/lastbiler fra både ind- og udland vil kunne beundres på pladsen, et
væld af salgsboder, tivoli og selvfølgelig den swingende country musik.

Der bliver udstillet amerikanske trucks, customs trucks, veteran lastbiler,
brugsbiler, model trucks, internationale trucks, pony biler m.fl. De
udstillede lastbiler er delt op i 12 kategorier, og søndag kåres de
flotteste fra hver kategori, men inden da skulle øjne og ører gerne være
mættet med et væld af dejlige oplevelser fra pladsen og musikteltet.

Country musikken er lagt i hænderne på go'e garvede musikere, og de viser en
bred vifte af alle genrer indenfor country'en - lige fra den traditionelle
til den mere rockede country musik.

I tre dage vil følgende bands/solister underholde:

QUESTION: The radio folks were talking about the fact that Chet Atkins and Elvis Presley never got along. Do you know anything about all that?

ANSWER: Even though Chet Atkins was an RCA producer—as the story goes-he wasn’t one of Presley’s favorite folks, according to Gordon Stoker, of The Jordanaires, who sang on many Elvis hit records. Stoker commented, “Chet didn't think Presley would go anywhere in the music business. He said that Elvis was just a long-haired kid who was a passing fancy.” Chet hired Gordon to work on “Heartbreak Hotel” and “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You,” but didn’t hire the rest of the quartet. That ruffled Elvis’ feathers, and he made sure that The Jordanaires were not only on his future sessions—they actually got credit on the label, too. And, Gordon adds, “To the day he died, Elvis didn't like Chet Atkins.”

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that the Bellamy Brothers were appearing on some network television program. Do you now which one and when?

ANSWER: The Bellamy Brothers are set for a July 15^th appearance on the Fox News Channel’s “FOX And Friends.” Howard and Davis will perform music from their current CD, “Angels & Outlaws, Volume 1.”

QUESTION: One of my aunts used to sing a song about “Givin’ A Lift” or “Will You Give Me A Lift.” She said it was on the radio by Loretta Lynn many years ago. Do you have any information on a song like that?

ANSWER: “You Wanna Give Me A Lift “ was Loretta Lynn’s 26^th charted tune. It peaked at # 6 in 1970 and was on the charts for 15 weeks.

QUESTION: The radio guy mentioned about a “Burton Guitar Festival” somewhere or other. Who is Burton and what’s the festival all about?

ANSWER: The James Burton International Guitar Festival is scheduled for August 19^th thru 21^st in Shreveport, La. and will feature Brad Paisley, Steve Wariner, Johnny Hiland, Doyle Dykes and Alabama's Jeff Cook. At age of 15, James Burton played lead guitar on Dale Hawkins' classic recording of "Suzie Q" in 1957. He later moved to Los Angeles and became a session and road musician, working with names like Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, and Frank Sinatra. The festival benefits the James Burton Foundation, which provides instruments and scholarships to children and young adults.

QUESTION: My brother in law used to sing a song about “Rockin’ In Rosalee’s Boat.” He said it was on the radio quite often back in the 70’s. I have called our radio stations and they don’t know anything about such a song. Do you know?

ANSWER: “Rocking In Rosalee’s Boat” was a # 28 hit for Nick Nixon in 1976. It was his 6^th chart single and was on the charts for 13 weeks.

QUESTION: My uncle has an old 45 RPM recording by a guy singing about “Me And Fred And Joe And Bill.” The record is so old, the label is worn off. Do you know who the singer is?

ANSWER: “Me And Fred And Joe And Bill” was Porter Wagoner’s 8^th chart single. It peaked at # 29 in 1959.

QUESTION: Was Chet Atkins ever nominated for a Grammy?

ANSWER: Chet Atkins won 14 GRAMMY Awards, was CMA’s Instrumentalist Of The Year nine times and ACM’s Guitarist Of The Year twice.

QUESTION: My uncle was a steel guitar fan and he told me stories about a guitar player named Curly Chalker, who played on Lefty Frizzell records and was big in Las Vegas. Do you know his real name and whatever happened top him?

ANSWER: Harold Lee “Curly” Chalker toured with Lefty Frizzell in the early 1950’s and played on his recording of “Always Late.” Chalker played the Las Vegas club circuit for several years before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1967. In 1973, he became the steel guitar player for the “Hee Haw” TV series. Curly Chalker died in 1998. (Han var en av de bästa och stilbildare i första hand för C6th-stämningen. JL)

QUESTION: My cousin used to sing a song about “Born To Love You.” He said it was on the radio by Waylon Jennings back in the 60’s. Do you have any information on that song?

ANSWER: “Born To love You” was the flipside of Waylon’s 1967 # 12 hit, “Mental Revenge.”

George Strait earned his second consecutive No. 1 debut on the U.S. pop charts knocking out Coldplay who held the position for three weeks. Strait's Somewhere Down in Texas, the 33rd album of his career, sold 244,783 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan—his biggest-selling first week for a studio album. (Strait’s 50 Number Ones album—which actually contains 51 Number One Singles—topped the charts last year selling nearly 350,000 copies the first week with total sales of over 5 million.) Strait has sold more than 62 million records during his career making him the most certified country artist of all time with 26 different Platinum or Multi-Platinum albums and the No. 2 most certified male artist in all genres of music (just behind Elvis Presley). Strait also holds the record for the most No. 1 songs by a single artist with 51.

The Sho-Bud company still for sale. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars should cover enough materials to build many guitars, some specialized tools, jigs and patterns and of course, the name and all rights. Anybody interested, I'll put you in touch with the folks to talk with.

As many of you know, the EMCI brand steel guitar was an extremely good sounding, well built steel guitar and a predecessor to the GFI. This company is also for sale. The last price I heard is around fifty thousand dollars. This may seem like a lot but by the time you figure it all, including enough parts and materials and tools to build 25 to 35 guitars, your total investment will be recouped and you will still be the owner of the name, the tools and the rights to continue manufacturing. This is a not a bad deal if you say it real fast. Just think, if you'd have taken the money that you bought your house with and bought one of these two companies, you'd probably have had enough money by now to buy ten houses. An interesting thought anyway.

Bluegrass, country and western swing. What do these three different styles of music have in common? Is it the fact that organic acoustic instruments are used somewhat in all or is it the fact that these are all pure American born styles? Steel guitar is used in all three predominantly probably more than any other kinds of music, even though, in bluegrass, the steel guitar is usually acoustic. Such artists as Ricky Scaggs had their foot in both camps, country and bluegrass and one of the prerequisites that a player had to play excellent acoustic steel also. By acoustic steel, I mean resophonic, under such brand names as Beard, Dobro, Regal, National, etc. It seems to me that as a steel guitar and American music lover, if you can love one, you can love them all. After all, these are the fertile grounds that steel guitar grew up in. Now that it is maturing, it can go on to be accepted in any style of music, provided it is played correctly.

I am seeing and not too surprised by it, several professional steel guitarists who play under high pressure conditions and can accept no bad notes under these conditions, do away with half stop feels on the knee levers. Do you lower your second string on your E9th neck a half and a whole with one knee lever because someone convinced you long ago that you were getting two for one this way? Many pros are putting these two different notes on two different knee levers. This does guarantee that you will get the note you are after, in tune every time.

I am also seeing several pro players voicing opinions negative to up knee levers. As we all know, up knee levers are not the most comfortable things to use. One way to get around an up knee lever is to do away with it completely if you can in your style of playing or if you can't, move it to another position like an additional left left or left right. Remember the Crawford Cluster that has five knee levers on one leg. In my opinion, all but the up can be used very efficiently. This is 90 percent news and 10 percent opinion.

Country Minstrels med Carolina Åkerlind spelar upp till dans i västra logen kl. 21.00. Det kommer att bli en riktig Texas Honky Tonk Night kan jag lova.

Det blev inget skrivet i går på söndagen på grund av trötthet efter hemkomsten från Ransäter. Att köra bil så långt (37 mil) efter att ha fått alltför lite sömn natten innan är inget kul. Men i Ransäter hade jag kul genom att först spela med High Jacks och sedan hela danskvällen med Country Minstrels.

High Jacks består av nygifta paret Per-Erik och Nina och några medmusikanter plus undertecknad på just den här konserten. Låtarna hade jag fått 2 dagar innan på en bränd CD och hunnit lyssna igenom det hela åtminstone en gång. Någon repetition hanns aldrig med förutom en kvarts genomgång innan showen. Alltid spännande att se om sånt här funkar. Lyckligvis tror jag att det fungerade förutom min snygga tonartshöjning efter ett av mina solon. Men just detta hade bandet passat på att stryka utan min vetskap och de spelade vidare i den ursprungliga tonarten. "Clashing" kallas det!

Country Minstrels spelade upp till dans i en av logarna och vi var laddade till tusen. Vi började kl. 21.00 och det var ganska tunt med folk. Anledningen var att det samtidigt var show av olika slag på stora scenen. Men nåväl, efter vår första paus trodde vi att det äntligen skulle komma lite folk till vår del av parken då showdelen hade avslutats. Cirka 50talet människor dök upp och satt och lyssnade på oss under denna timma, några dansade förstås. På puben som är belägen i ett hus strax bredvid vår loge var det fullt med folk hela kvällen, säkert flera hundra personer. Där fanns ingen underhållning förutom mat och öl förstås!

Vår sista långa avdelning spelade vi inför ca. 10 – 15 människor trots att vi under hela kvällen spelade riktig dansvänlig honkytonkmusik i Texasstil. Självklart undrade vi varför inga människor kom till vår del av parken utan stannade kvar i puben och på andra ställen. Vi fick reda på att man hade ett vanligt lokalt populärt dansband i andra delen av parken i en annan loge. Vi blev något förvånade!

Jag läste i ditt nyhetsbrev några inlägg om jag är en "äkta" countryartist eller inte. Det var en intressant diskussion även om jag blir både lite ledsen och förundrad över enkelspårigheten som ibland kan skönjas. För MIG är countryn ett uttryckssätt som kan ske på många olika sätt, precis som all annan musik. Jag diggar tex inte honky tonk personligen, men blir enormt berörd av vackra meningsfulla texter som framförs med känsla. DÄR är ursprunget till den riktigt countryn, berättelsen. The Carter family var startskottet egentligen och sedan
har utvecklingen gått framåt. Honky tonken kom långt senare. Tycker man att artister som Willie Nelson och Johnny Cash är äkta country, så kan jag berätta att de på sin tid revolutionerade countryn och blåste en förändringens vind inom countryn. Emmylou Harris, Patsy Cline och Elvis Presley likaså. Idag har vi den "nya countryn" från ett Nashville i total förändring; Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Shania Twain osv osv. Jag skrev en låt tillsammans med en låtskrivare från Nashville som berättade för mig att Nashville inte är vad det har varit utan att det är andra krafter som styr idag.- Min låt "Walk a mile" är nästan för mycket country idag.. För min del spelar det liten roll om jag går omkring i rattle snake boots, Wrangler jeans och bär hatt. Nä, det är inte hatten som gör en "cowboy" eller "cowgirl", utan om man har förmågan att
förmedla en berättelse på rätt sätt, oavsett om det är en känslosam ballad eller en glad upptempo popcountry hit. Men Sveriges countryscener släpper ju inte in nytt blod så den upplevelsen lär utebli. Jättesynd tycker jag!!

PS Jag älskar i alla fall det jag gör och det tror jag syns och hörs. Och by the way, det är inte JAG som har hittat på att jag tillhör gengren country, det är det andra som gjort, men jag tycker nog att det är dags att inse att denna gengre är en av de bredaste i världen och det är väl härligt tycker jag. Personligen har jag favoritlåtar med vitt skilda artister som Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Alison Krauss samt Jessica Andrews. Tvära kast, eller hur?? Och det är ju DET som är så spännande och roligt. Och jag utmanar alla arrangörer och nya lyssnare som inte känner till min musik. Det är bara att höra av sig så ska ni få en timme med riktigt bra musik....om

Först och främst ett tack för ditt långa mail och att du tagit dig tid med att skriva till mitt mig och mitt Nyhetsbrev.

Jag kan eftersom jag varit i musikbranschen sedan början av 60-talet förstå din frustration över att få kritik. Det är aldrig kul för en artist att få kritik för sitt arbete som man förmodligen övat och övat på länge. Samtidigt förstår jag de som kritiserar dagens artister som stämplar sig själva (eller blir stämplade av okunniga skivbolags-direktörer) som countryartister. Jag hör som du kanske vet själv till en av de som vill bevara countrymusikens rötter och har varit och är fortfarande kritisk till de arrangörer som kallar sina festivaler för countryfestivaler trots att det finns allt annat än country med i artistlistan. Jag tolkar ditt uttryckssätt "enkelspårighet" som att du helst skulle vilja att countrymusikfestivalerna bjuder på all sorts musik, ungefär som man gjorde i Ydre i år. Visst kan de göra på det sättet, men varför då kalla det hela för countryfestival? Och varför är arrangörer som håller på traditioner enkelspåriga då dessa oftast bjuder på bra svenska countryband, importerade superbra countryartister från både Texas och Nashville, bra bluegrassband med mera. Countrymusiken är så bred, och då menar jag den musik som verkligen ÄR countrymusik, att den kan tillfredsställa ALLA smaker utan att för den skull behöva gå utanför musiken kärna.

Jag är allätare av musik och älskar att lyssna till t ex Frank Sinatra, The Mills Brothers, storbandsjazz, tradjazz, allehanda folkmusik med mera, med mera. Men jag blandar inte ihop musikstilarna bara för att jag tycker om just alla de här sorterna. Jazz är jazz, pop är pop och så vidare! Jag började lyssna på countrymusik redan i tonåren (jag är 61 nu) och har under åren bildat mig en klar uppfattning om var gränserna går beträffande countrymusik. Kalla mig gärna insnöad, det har andra gjort tidigare, och det är sånt man får köpa om man sticker ut hakan alltför mycket. Men egentligen undrar jag om inte de som kritiserar mig och min renlighetslära är de som ligger där djupast i snön?

Att en berättande text skulle innebära att den därför skulle klassificeras som country är kanske inte en rätt tanke. Om din berättande text hamnar hos t ex Frank Sinatra med ett storband, blir det då countrymusik? Eller om Svenne Rubins spelade in texten med egen melodi, är det country? Kanske vi skulle prova att ge samma text till Britney Spears! Country? Nej, knappast och jag hoppas att du Carola förstår vad jag menar. Text är bara ord som måste kombineras med rätt sorts musik för att bli countrymusik i slutändan.

Oavsett i vilken genre man jobbar så är det ändå trovärdigheten som är det viktigaste. Åtminstone har det varit mitt mål under min karriär som countrymusikant. Däremot har jag som proffs medverkat i oräkneliga andra band av olika slag! Utger man sig för att vara ett countryband eller countryartist så ska man givetvis hålla sig inom den genren i sitt musikval. Detsamma tycker jag måste gälla för alla som arrangerar countrymusikfestivaler i vårt land. Men tyvärr är ibland okunnigheten om countrymusik även där obefintlig!

Men lycka till Carola i din fortsatta karriär! JL.

Regarding the incomparable Hank Singer, yes he does use a fifth string (C) on his fiddle. That really doesn't have much of a bearing on playing in Ab though. It allows a few more cool low-end double-stops that utilize open strings but it doesn't make all the others any easier to get in tune! Hank seems to not have a problem with that in any key though. He is a truly amazing and gifted player.

I'll be performing in Furuvik, Sweden at the Scandinavian Country Festival on Aug. 4th - 6th with my band as well as my traditional country colleagues Justin Trevino and Amber Digby. Randy Reinhard will be with us on steel. I'm really looking forward to our trip. Can't say enough great things about that beautiful country and it's people. We are lucky to have friends there like Kjell Warnevall, Eddie Eriksson, Red Jenkins, Bo Svensson and many others that love and support Country Music. It'll be great also to visit with another Forumite/Steeler friend there, Janne Lindgren, who is keeping it going there with his band the Country Minstrels. He and his wife Eva are the best!

I look forward to pickin' in Germany one day, hopefully soon. Put in a word for us Mike!

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

The Louvin Brothers 1956 hit single, “I Don’t Believe You’ve Met My Baby,” was by chart numbers---the biggest record for Ira and Charlie Louvin.

The Capitol Records single entered the country music charts January 14^th, 1956. It was the brother duo’s 2^nd chart record and their only number one---where it stayed for two weeks.

According to Charlie Louvin, “I Don’t Believe You’ve Met My Baby” came to us as a “real life song.” We didn’t think the song would sell as Autry Inman had written it. So Ira asked Autry if he could rewrite par of it—we didn’t want to own any part of the song---we just thought it needed some changes.”

“The first lines of the song wound up being “Last night my dear the rain was falling- I went to bed so sad and blue-and then I had a dream of you.” Those lines were not part of the original song, when Autry Inman brought it to us. Ira changed what Autry had written as something real and changed it to a dream.”

“I Don’t Believe You’ve Met My Baby” was on the country music charts for 24 weeks.

QUESTION: You recently mentioned The Jordanaires. I know they sang on several hit records. Can you name some of them?

ANSWER: The Jordanaires are heard on Jimmy Dean’s “Big Bad John,” George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man.” They were recently inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

QUESTION: The radio guys were talking about Big Al Downing having something to do with Wanda Jackson’s recordings. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Big Al played on Wanda Jackson’s 1960 pop hit “Let’s Have A Party” with a studio band that also featured Buck Owens. Al was also Jackson’s keyboard player on the road for several years.

QUESTION: I heard that on of the McReynolds Brothers was now recording with someone else. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Jesse McReynolds and Charles Whitstein, have recorded a new album titled “A Tribute to Brother Duets.” McReynolds and his late brother, Jim, performed as Jim & Jesse.

As many of you know, the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society meets every year in July at the Music City Sheraton Hotel down the road from the Opryland Hotel. This is a society of good musicians and fans who admire Chet Atkins, his playing and his legacy. There are players from all over the world who fly in to this event. Chet's style of guitar which was shared with Merle Travis, Leo Kotke, Mose Reager, Joe Maphis, Jerry Reed and many others, seems to be appreciated by guitar fans the world over.

I feel very lucky to be invited every year as a player of this style on steel guitar. There are a few of us steel players who can play this style and I hope there will be more in the future. I'm astounded at the number of young players from the world over who play this style extremely well. This large convention features not only great players but also manufacturers of guitars, hand-crafted and factory, custom amplifiers and purveyors of custom courses and learning materials. Just walking through the main room, you can see many legends in the business, Paul Yandell, Tom Bresh, the legendary Bob Saxton, along with the presidents of some of the largest guitar companies there are. If any of you have been to the St. Louis steel guitar show, you will sort of have a taste for what happens at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Days.

Bob Saxton, a guitarist who is on most of my CDs and I, opened the festivities this year in the main auditorium to large crowd of aficionados. I played my SuperSlide lapsteel and did several Atkins-Travis style tunes. Bob did his entire act which held everyone spellbound because of his legendary abilities in this style. Bob Saxton is truly a event everywhere he goes. Guitar lovers everywhere, this is definitely an event to attend.

I get many calls and emails asking what a particular guitar is worth. Many of you are wanting to bid on something on Ebay and want to know how high to go or you have already bought on Ebay and want to know how bad you were stung. I get many calls from widows whose husbands died leaving a houseful of musical gear to liquidate. All this along with people who bought old Sho-Buds or Pushpull Emmons many years ago and want to know what their guitar is worth today. The truth is, I could sit at my computer for hour after hour doing nothing but free guesstimate appraisals that may be accurate or may not be. I can't and won't do this because the accuracy without seeing the guitar or at least having pictures, a serial number, brand and exact model is not going to be correct.

George Gruhn of Gruhn guitars and many of the dealers who deal in vintage instruments have been doing for a long time what I'm going to start doing now. If you need an appraisal as to the instruments worth or value for insurance purposes, sale purposes or no purpose at all, here is what you can do. Send me pictures of the top, front and bottom of the guitar, the serial number and twenty five dollars and I will mail you an accurate, notarized statement of value of the instrument in today's market.

Having such a document on hand can be of great value to you in case of damage to or theft of the instrument for insurance claims or police reports to say nothing of loss from UPS or Fedex. With a pre-established statement of value for your instrument, it would be very hard for any shipping company or airline to argue about the value if a settlement needs to be made.

Is there any interest in having a vintage steel guitar show and swap meet where you can come and show off your guitar, play a few tunes and hang out with other vintage guitar lovers? Are you missing parts for the vintage 4 neck StringMaster? Do you have a houseful of old steel guitar parts or something you need to buy? Interested in buying a Bigsby? Or do what to find that first lapsteel that you ever had which started you down the path to steel guitar? Want to hear steel guitar the way it was played many years ago on Webb Piece, Faron Young, George Morgan or Eddy Arnold records?

I personally feel a vintage guitar get together would make a lot of steel guitar nuts very happy. Let me know! I can't answer every email because of the volume of emails I get, but everyone will be read. Your feedback keeps me in the know as much as my newsletter keeps you in the know.

Just hemkommen från en timmes tennis med hustrun (hon leder med 9 – 7) och jag känner mig lite utpumpad. Lagom då att sätta sig vid datorn och få iväg ett Nyhetsbrev.

Precis som Cina Samuelson här nedan så har hustrun och jag häromdagen hittat små härliga gula saker i skogen. Mer regn fler svampar, det gillar jag!

För övrigt så läste jag i tisdagens Expressen om att jazzen har ungefär samma problem som countrymusiken då det gäller formatet. Ulf Olsson skriver som rubrik "Festival utan jazz" och det handlar alltså om Stockholms jazzfestival på Skeppsholmen. Han skriver "varför kalla det jazz" då man bjuder på akter som Robyn med flera popartister? Han skriver att det tyvärr även ute i Europas jazzfestivaler blandas friskt med både det ena och det andra. Slutklämmen i Ulf Olssons artikel är läcker "drömma om att Miles Davis ska återuppstå från de döda och rensa scenen från all låtsasjazz". Byt ut Miles Davis mot Hank Williams och låtsasjazz mot låtsascountry så stämmer det här in på en del svenska så kallade countryfestivaler! Gnälligt?? Nä, tyvärr en naken sanning! Vill du göra lite reklam igen för vår festival nu i helgen 22-23, så är vi tacksamma. Vi håller som bästa på att förbereda oss. I år satsar vi ju enbart på svenska countryartister.Måtte nu bara vädrets makter vara med oss - det blir ju en annan upplevelse om solen är varm! Utomhus blir det full fart förstås kl. 10-17 med bl.a. westernridning, lerduveskytte, kobingo, indianska danser, linedance, guldvaskning, Björnjägare mm mm. Dessutom har vi liveuppträdande utomhus dagtid av några av kvällsartisterna. Inne på scenen startar det kl. 20 och på fredagen presenterar vi Pilgrim, Angela Lidin, Marina Uppgren & the Cheating Heart, Martin Nilsson och Highway 40. På lördagen inleder vi med den rikstäckande talangtävlingen, därefter är det dags för Country Cream, Inger Nordström & Rhinestone band, Tennessee Drifters och Dottie & the Cosmos Cowboys.

Stugbyn är fullbokad men det finns fortfarande plats på campingen. Vi ser fram emot helgen och att få träffa många goa countrydiggare.

Åh, vilken sommar! Här mot västkusten har det varit några fantastiska veckor med underbar sol. Helt ljuvligt för en soldyrkare som jag.

Nu, ett par dagar, har vi fått några ordentliga regnskurar, men det är ändå varmt och skönt. Det är ju perfekt för "våra gula vänner" i skogen. Tog en promenad och hittade jättefina kantareller i helgen. Gjorde en stuvning av dem och åt det till grillad fläskfile, det var såååååååååå gott!

I lördags sjöng jag på en vigsel. Det är alltid en lika stor ära och glädje att få vara en del i en så stor dag.

Om man finns i närheten av Gränna eller är sugen på att ta sig till de trakterna i sommar så spelar jag tillsammans med Springhill Boys vid Eklunden på Visingsö lördagen den 30/7, då det anordnas en countrybarbequekväll. Om vädret kan vara med oss så kommer det säkert att bli en trevlig kväll på denna mysiga ö.

Vill bara säga att jag respekterar allas åsikter, men behöver inte dela dem som tur är. Det är ett vad jag förstår laddat ämne som jag mest tycker är spännande och för mig totalt prestigelöst. Min poäng var och är att det som är country för tex dig kanske inte är den countryn som jag tycker är "originalet" eller orsaken till varför jag älskar country. Jag tvivlar på att de som kritiserar nämligen har hört alla mina låtar, och sedan har jag, som jag skrev, aldrig själv framhållit mig som en "country artist". Jag är mer diversifierad än så och är inte så upphängd på att allt MÅSTE vara "äkta country". Däremot gillar jag "doften" av country i det mesta jag gör. Många säger att det sitter i rösten, men det är ytterligare en åsikt som man kan antingen dela eller inte. Jag gör det givetvis. Jag skriver det jag skriver och sjunger det jag sjunger efter vad
mitt hjärta vill, och by the way, mina mesta countrylåtar är inte över huvudtaget utgivna ännu...

Du har självklart rätt i att man ska acceptera andras åsikter vilket ämne man än diskuterar. Alla måste få ha sina tankar om vad som kan kallas country eller inte. Countrymusik är inte speciellt laddat, åtminstone inte för oss som är lite kunniga i ämnet. Det finns heller ingen prestige eller liknande instoppat mellan raderna. Jag försöker endast att vara så saklig som möjligt så att du och läsarna ska förstå varför jag tycker som jag gör.

Det som är lite konstigt i hela kråksången är att det oftast är de som varit intresserade av countrymusik en kort tid som helst vill diskutera och tala om för oss "gamlingar" vad som är countrymusik. Nybörjarna utgår oftast från listor som t ex Billboards countrylista och branschtidningar från Nashville. De, nybörjarna alltså, glömmer helt enkelt bort att countrymusik är en miljardindustri som många producenter och skivbolagsdirektörer vill bli delaktiga av men bryr sig sällan om vad man släpper ut för musik med sin artister man kallar country. Helst vill producenterna att countryartisterna ska placera sig på ALLA listor som finns och då får man göra avkall på om det är country man spelar in eller inte. Att hamna på försäljningslistorna är det viktigaste för då klirrar det i kassan. Lysande exempel är Faith Hill, Emmylou Harris rockinspelningar och förfärligt nog även Loretta Lynns senaste. Ingen vettig människa kan kalla det här countrymusik och det gäller många artister som har placerats på Billboards countrylista genom åren. Vi "gamlingar" känner till det här förhållandet då vi redan på 60-talet bl a kunde finna en hel del av Elvis rockklassiker på den listan. Vi tror alltså inte ett skvatt på de amerikanska listorna. Pengar och inte moralen styr hela branschen och därför får man tänka lite själv.

Mitt tips till dig Carola är att du köper in dig på lite klassisk countrymusik i form av Bear Familys boxar med t ex Connie Smith, Jean Shepard och varför inte Ray Price. Där hittar du kärnan i hela musikformen och kanske sedan kan förstå varför vi "gamlingar" har de åsikter vi har. JL.

Ralph Stanley is doing well three weeks after a recent triple-bypass surgery. The 78-year-old musician has been on the phone rearranging his tour schedule, and booking artists for his 2006 Hills of Home bluegrass festival. He hopes to be back on the road in August.

Alison Krauss & Union Station will tour England, Ireland and Scotland for the first time since 1997. Shows in Dublin and London sold out so quickly that second nights were added in those markets. The tour stars Sept. 4 in Dublin and wraps Sept. 18 in London...

George Jones will release Hits I Missed...And One I Didn’t Sept. 13 on Bandit Records. The CD, produced by Keith Stegall, features 12 covers of songs that Jones originally passed on, and is a tribute to the original versions and artists. The "one I didn’t" refers to Jones’ new recording of "He Stopped Loving Her Today"...

QUESTION: Is Willie Nelson doing the Farm Aid concert this year and if so when and where?

ANSWER: According to Willie Nelson, the 2005 edition of Farm Aid will mark it’s 20^th anniversary September 18^th at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, Illinois (near Chicago).

QUESTION: I heard something mentioned on the radio about a Chris LeDoux Day at the hall of fame. Do you have any information? And did Chris record any albums?

ANSWER: Chris LeDoux was posthumously inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Chris died March 9^th following a struggle with cancer of the bile duct at the age of 56. Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal has proclaimed July 30^th as "Chris LeDoux Day," during the Cheyenne Frontier Days Celebration. Chris recorded 36 albums and sold nearly 6 million records during his career.

QUESTION: The recording of “Put If Off Until Tomorrow” by Bill Phillips and Dolly Parton has always been one of my favorites. One of my cousins keeps saying that the song was also on the radio by The Wilburn Brothers. Could that be true?

ANSWER: Could be. “Put If Off Until Tomorrow” was a track in the Wilburn Brothers 1966 “Let’s Go Country” album.

QUESTION: I know that the song “He’ll Have To Go” was a hit for Jim Reeves. But my mother says she heard it on the radio by Dave Dudley many years ago. Our local radio DJ says that Dudley never recorded that song and he’ll eat his hat if anybody can prove otherwise. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: “He’ll Have To Go” was a track in Dave Dudley’s 1964 “Travelin’ With Dave Dudley” album. Would your radio DJ like fries with that hat?

QUESTION: The radio guys were talking about a new George Jones album coming out. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: September 13^th is the release date for Jones’ new CD titled, "Hits I Missed…And One I Didn’t.” It features 11 new recordings of songs that the George says he passed on—plus one he thought was a total stiff, only to have it become the biggest hit of his career. The project is a "tip of the hat" to the original versions and the artists that did record them.

QUESTION: I heard that Vince Gill is doing some kind of fund-raising for the Hall Of Fame. What’s that all about?

ANSWER: Vince Gill is heading up an artist-based fundraising campaign for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Vince said he knew the Hall of Fame needed increased funding and called a number of artists together to discuss the problem. ANSWER: “Walk On Bye” was written by Kendall Hayes. VanDyke’s name is not listed on the song.

Bobbe's Nashville News Ready for another pet peeve?
Well, I have one that involves communication. I'm not talking about language barriers or not being able to understand the club owner or the band leader when he threatens to fire you, I'm talking about the universal language, the language of music. I don't mean the deep, complicated versions of this somewhat mathematically complex musical system, what I am talking about is the very necessary and simple understanding of a musical language that you can use to communicate with your fellow band members, band leader or anyone else who is trying to guide you through a complicated song or even a simple song that you may not be aware of the next upcoming chord while you're live and onstage in front of an audience.

Why would you want to be able to do this? If you're live onstage in front of an audience, you can't stop the show and ask what the next chord is. If you're in a studio, the tape and the time clock are both running and so is the overhead the producer is having to pay. He doesn't need to stop and teach you what a 2 minor chord is. Can you imagine a girl singer handing you charts and you having to ask which way is up on the chord chart? No, you don't need an 18 year old girl singer who can't play anything to have to teach you what a 2 minor chord is. If she says, I want a 2511 intro in the key of G, your only question should be, "What tempo?"

It is ridiculous in this day and time to not understand and be able to communicate with the simple number system. It's been done for centuries by musicians in all other genres of music. We all need to understand and learn this very, very simple system. Two hours at the most is what anybody with any musical ability and average intelligence would need to spend to understand enough to play any country tune.

Many country songs only have 3 chords, but you have to put them in the right place at exactly the right time. This means that you only have 3 numbers that you have to work with in many country songs. But is this really all you have to worry about? No. You also need to be aware of split measures, keys, verses, choruses, where to fill or put modulations, the symbols for minors, majors, diminished, augmented etc. chords.

Foreigners, many of whom don't speak English well, come in my store and ask me questions about chord progressions on my CDs and using this number system, I can communicate much better musically than we can using a common verbal language. If foreigners can do it, and if people have been doing it for centuries, why is there any excuse for any steel player who works in any band not to know what a 1, 4, 5 or 6 minor chord is and how and when to play it today.

If you play steel guitar, any musical instrument at all and even if you only sing, it's mandatory that you have a language to communicate in with your fellow musicians.

Luckily for us all, you don't have to pigeon-hole some professional player and bore and beg him to show you the basics because this has already been done for you by Wynonna Judd's great guitar player, Chas Williams. He has a number system book and CD out that makes learning this system a total no-brainer. It has samples of charts from such great studio musicians such as Brent Mason, Charley McCoy, Eddie Bayers, Barry Beckett, Laura Foster and Jimmy Capps. There are actually hand-written samples of charts used on sessions along with explanations of why they do it their way.

Even though this system has been around for hundreds of years, it is now called the Nashville Shorthand System or the Nashville Number System or the just plain Number System.

I learned this system myself when I was a music teacher in my early twenties at a large music school on the east coast but this book has shown me faster and neater shortcuts than I would have ever learned on my own. So what I'm saying here is if you are a pro and think you know this system inside out, you can still learn a lot to make it simpler and more complete with this book and CD. If you are a beginner or if you have been playing for a few years and just now working on stage at the local grange hall, town hall Opry, VFW or American Legion club, you need this book more than you'll ever know. If you work in a band where nobody knows this system, buy one book and share it and suddenly you'll realize how much better your band will sound overall along with a lot better, cleaner show and less fist fights at the end of each song.

If you're not a steel player, but a singer or player of any other instrument, you need this book and CD as much as a steel player because you all have to communicate. If you're a singer, how else are you going to be able to tell the band how to do your intro? In other words, if you have anything to do with music, you need this book.

After all, isn't communication the secret to everything?

Now you might say, what has this got to do with Bobbe's news?

Well, here's the news. This book has been out of print for many months. We have had many folks wanting to buy it and we haven't had it. We just got 90 copies in. Get them while they're hot. At only $19.95 for both the book and the CD together, it's a real bargain. There's no excuse for any musician of any kind not know the basic number system.

Du har helt rätt, det finns/fanns en platta med Hasse och mig på bolaget Marianne. Plattan heter Rosen Lindgren Band och titeln Green Rose Rag och kom ut 1979. Den är helt instrumental och låtarna är "Green Rose Rag", "I´m All Wrapped Up In You","How Deep Is Your Love","Don´t Slam The Door","Ruby, Don´t Take Your Love To Town", "Life Of A Rodeo Cowboy", "I Love You So Much It Hurts", "Pure Love", "Too Many River", "Lonely Shepherd", "Three Time Loser", "If You Want Me" och "Feelings". Övriga musiker var Kjell Öhman – piano, Mike Watson – elbas och Roger Palm – trummor. Plattan är utgången sedan många, många år! JL.

Det är ju olika värdar varje program så man får ju kolla på sina favoriter. Dagens värd var sverigevännen Darrel McCall och bara det gör ju att man måste kolla. Vi är ju många som gillar Darrel här i Sweden. Han och fru Mona sjöng flera låtar och man hörde att han hade "A great time" . Programmet blev ett riktigt " Texas saturdaynight" program, med bl.a. Justin Trevino på fiddel.

Sedan började han tala om att han varit i sverige flera gånger och haft mycket trevligt här "Beutiful girls and ugly men he he he " Som av en händelse satt hans " Good friend Red Jenkins Stockholm Sweden" i publiken. Han blev uppbjuden och sjöng först "Line me up" och sedan "Truck driving man". Och den svenska flaggan fladdrade högst i Nashville.

"Give him a big applaude he´se a great guy I´ll tell you ". Darrel gjorde verkligen verkligen reklam för sverige och svenk country. Red Jenkins gjorde naturligtvis också "a great jobb" .
Ska vi tro att det blir enklare att få över amerikanska artister efter detta? Ja inte blir det svårare.

QUESTION: The radio guys were talking about Bobby Bare finally recording as new album. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Oct. 4^th is the release date for “The Moon Was Blue,” Bobby Bare’s first album in 22 years. The new album is on Dualtone Records and was produced by Bobby Bare Jr. and Mark Nevers.

Hello fellow players,
This topic seems to come up very often in different places. I see it come up and quite often ignore it, even though I feel I have the answer as do several other people in the know.

The question being, what is the best selling steel guitar album worldwide? Unfortunately and undisputedly, the answer is "The Happy Steel Guitar" put out by the worldwide company GRT in 1976. I say unfortunately because it may not be one of the worst albums ever done, but it is by far an awful long way from being one of the best.

I can say this with authority because I am the player on the album. If it were a great album, I'm not above saying it was great, however it's not. I also feel sure that less than 1 percent of the people who bought the album even knew what a steel guitar.

A well known Nashville producer was commissioned by his major record label to produce this album for a worldwide distributorship in what was called the grade B market place which is stores that do not specialize in selling music only, such as Walmart, K-Mart, Walgreen's but do sell tremendous volumes of product.

The producer did not take this assignment very seriously because he had no charts, hired only who was available and could only cut songs that were in his publishing catalog or in the catalog of GRT. The complete album was cut in 6 hours and during this time, the producer proceeded to get so intoxicated that he totally passed out behind the console and managed to distribute enough booze throughout the musicians and engineering staff that the entire project should have been totally scrapped.

My response a week later when the girls in the office at GRT called to get the spelling of my name correct, was "Please don't use my name on the album, just give me a check for my services rendered and I won't worry about residuals or a percentage deal. It was the most horrible session I've ever worked in my life." In retrospect, this was a mistake on my part because I only made two hundred dollars on this million seller.

I can't believe they released this album but they did. Not only did they release it in the United States and I had to see it in every Jiffy Mart and truck stop I went in to, but they were also sold, so it seems, in every country in the world.

What I find strange is that I have done nine super quality albums since with the finest musicians, engineering staff and studios as fine as money can rent or buy and there doesn't seem any way in this day and time to get any kind of a major recording deal with instrumentals. The fact is, I was motivated to put out my own albums in an attempt to live down "The Happy Steel Guitar". I didn't want THAT to be my legacy. I want to be judged by my best work, not my worst.

Some of the finest music in the world goes unheard and some of the worst is everywhere you don't want it to be.

Oh by the way, The Happy Steel Guitar has gone on to sell over a million copies worldwide that can be tracked. No telling how many that can't be. It obviously isn't quality that major record labels look for or even recognize at times. Ask me, I've experienced all this first hand.

It's been almost 2 years since Fender unleashed the Steel King amplifier on the public. Due to popular demand, I became a Fender dealer just to handle this amp for the select few of you I thought would want it, with no expectations. After having this amp in the store for a year and playing it on live jobs and hearing several different brands of steel guitar through it, my love and admiration for it has grown by leaps and bounds. I have sold several of these amplifiers to people who have used them to replace their Webbs, Evans and older Peavey amps. I have got nothing but raves back from all of them.

Gayland Mathews, steel guitarist with Gretchen Wilson, uses a new GFI steel guitar and 2 Fender Steel King amps and is a staunch supporter of this combination. Gayland is not a beginner as I have known him and been dealing with him for over 10 years and this man definitely has a good set of ears.

As most of you know, I am pretty vocal about my opinions about products that are being invented and marketed to my friends, the steel players of the world. I don't jump on just every fad or trick that comes along without living with it for a good while and believing in it myself. This is my acid test. Well, this amplifier has more than passed the acid test.

What does it sound like, you may ask, compared to other amplifiers? I'll do my best to explain it here. It has very clear, big fat lows. The highs are not tinny and whiney but possess clarity and penetration. The color of the mids is rich and big without recoloring the tone of your steel guitar. This amplifier can definitely make a bad or poor sounding steel guitar sound many times better and as was once stated by one of Nashville's most elite steel players with the initials of B.E., this amp truly sounds incredible.

When it comes to demonstration amps in the store, we want an amplification system that will make the guitars sound as good as they possibly can. We are now using the Steel King for this setup. This amp lists for $1000, comes with a cover and plug-in full caster wheels. Our price complete is only $699. plus shipping. I am finally ready to ship to those of you who want to add a lot of sparkle to your tone.

You are completely wrong this time.......! I bought the "Happy Steel Guitar" in 1979 and I liked it very much, I still do! I think it is a great record!

Think about all us thousands of steel picker outside US that love to listen to pedal steel. At that time in 1976 we had no chance at all to listen to any steel picking at all. We had no Grand Ole Opry, no other radio with country music and very few records where imported to us here in Europe. The only instrumental records with steel was Starday Records like Pete Drake´s " The Fabulous......" and a couple of others at the same brand. When I found the LP "Happy Steel Guitar" I was very happy.

I am listening to "Happy Steel Guitar" right now and as I said in the first line, I still like it! Your story about the session is amazing. Do you remember the other musicians names?

Bobbe ger oss verligen en inblick i musikantlivet i Nashville och hans historier är både lärorika och intressanta. Bobbe har spelat med de flesta men har numera sin musikaffär som huvudsyssla. En av få musikaffärer som säljer pedal steel guitars i Nashville. Ni som åker första gången till Nashville, jag känner några, kommer att upptäcka att det inte är så lätt att hitta saker och ting in den stan. Ja, vill man bara hålla sig till Broadway och klubbarna däromkring då är allting enkelt. Men vill man vidga vyerna lite grann och gå/åka till riktigt bra klubbar så måste man ha kunskap om stadens enorma yta. Det får man genom erfarenhet och att vara frågvis, helst innan man står där i stan. De allra bästa klubbarna ligger INTE på Broadway! Ska man t ex besöka Ernest Tubb Records Shop och Midnite Jamboree, som Filip Flodman berättar om ovan, då måste man 2 mil utanför stan till ett område som kallas The Music Valley. Där ligger också Grand Ole Opry och en del andra klubbar, de flesta är dock turistfällor. Dock inte Grand Ole Opry som är ett måste om man aldrig varit där förut!

Nåväl, jag hoppas att ni får ut mycket av Nashville då ni reser dit. Där finns enormt mycket att upptäcka!

Igår kväll jobbade jag med StarLines (eller You and Me) orkester från Trosa. Jag har jobbat en hel del med Kenneth och Birgitta under senare år och det är alltid lika kul. Det handlar visserligen om normal dansmusik med lite inblandning av country och med mycket inspelade bakgrunder. Men det funkar fint!

Under rubriken RadioRutan i Gazetten, Stockholms Country Music Clubs tidning har jag haft information angående mitt program Country, Country Music där jag uppmanar medlemmar att skicka mig förslag på önskeskivor att spela. Under de 3 år jag varje vecka sänt mitt countryprogram över Radio Lidingö 97,8 har jag fått ca. 5 önskningar per email från klubbmedlemmar. Alltså knappt två önskning per år! Inte mycket för att vara Stockholms enda klubb för modern countrymusik! Jag funderar faktiskt på om det är någon mening att ta upp programmet i höst igen? Om inte ens medlemmar ur SCMC lyssnar på de countryprogram som sänds över Stockholm, vilka gör det då?

Jag tittade förresten just in på SCMCs hemsida och finner att man gör reklam för allehanda countryband i Sverige, men varken Mats Rådberg & Rankarna eller Country Minstrels finns med där. Ett tips till styrelsen är att man i framtiden i första hand listar de band som är tillhörande Stockholm med omgivning. JL.

Vi, One58, följer din uppmaning och skriver ett par ord om vår resa genom festival Sverige.

Vi blev inbjudna till Ydre festivalen för att dela med oss av vår repetoar. Väl framkomna, så chockade vädrets makter oss med en värme och en sol som inte med ord kan beskrivas. Vi skulle med andra ord, slå ett läger i nästan 38 graders värme, på en camping utan skugga och fläkt ! No mercy, så att säga !

Vi hade dock tur att få goda grannar som hjälpte oss med både vatten och att få luft i madrassen. Dessa artister kan man inte tacka nog. Vi ger både Don Redmond Band och Hazards en stor eloge. Vi fick en väldigt trevlig samvaro med både jamsession och annat. Stor scen, bra mixat ljud, god service och vänligt sinnade "cowboys och girls" överallt. Vi träffade även gamla bekanta från countryvärlden och det är alltid lika skojigt. Vi är jättenöjda !

Festivalen var väl arrangerad och låg på en perfekt plats mitt ute i naturen, strax utanför Tranås. På plats fanns det allt som en festival behöver och då framför allt ett bra väder och mycket trevlig och stor publik. Vi tackar Ydre festivalledning som gav oss tillfället att medverka på denna happening.

Nu väntar Vemdalens Countryfestival....

ett litet ps...vi läste om att Skåne hade startat en countryclub och det är ju fantastiskt roligt. Vi önskar denna club lycka till ! Vi passar då på att glädja Blekingeborna med att vi nyligen invigde ett westerncafé strax utanför Karlshamn, som fått namnet " Vildhästen" Här arrangeras det barbeque och countrykvällar i inhemsk miljö.

Man kan även hyra hästar för turridning och göra andra liknade aktiviteter. Jätteroligt, att vi i södern har fattat galoppen...

Hursomhelst.. enda molnet på himlen var att han Jack Baymore,som är välkänd i rockabillykretsar drog dit raggarfolket,så när jag nu äntligen skulle få spela country,stod dom och skrek efter rocknroll...SUCK
Jag kunde bara svara dom -Att Jag trodde jag skulle få spela country på en
countryfestival..och det var ju vad jag längtat efter och ville annars kunde
jag lika gärna spelat på Big Power Meet i Västerås,om du förstår vad jag menar.
Hursomhelst jag och Cosmos gjorde våran grej och bland countryrävarna tror
jag trots allt att det uppskattades en smula trots allt.

Så hade jag den stora äran att få sitta i juryn när talangjakten gick av
stapeln och ,det var nog si och så med dessa talanger ,de var 3 st. och
det var ett lätt val, när vi skulle rösta en tjej som sjöng lite vispop var
väl den som hade mest utstrålning och en viss glimt i ögat med eget matrial
åxo,som merit. Dom övriga var inte ens värda en notering om jag säger
så...hårda ord jovisst men du hade säkert fårstått vad jag menat om du varit
med och sett och hört dom.

Men trots allt så fick jag en trevlig stund tillsammans med de övriga i
Juryn där Bertil Fjellner från Vemdalen var med, samt den alltid lika glada
och trevliga Kurre från Hagfors som alltid får mej att skratta till hans
historier, sen var det sekreterare och ordförande från Brålanda countryclub
som jag fick möjlighet att lära känna litegranna. Bertil Fjellner gjorde fin reklam för Vemdalen där jag såg att du skulle spela Jan, och jag blev bara glad att se dej & Co programmet.

Synd att det regnade bara det gör ju att folk väljer att stanna i husvagnen
eller vad dom nu gör om dom har semester?
Men allt som allt jag är lycklig och nöjd med Cosmos Cowboys insats och jag
tycker vi gjorde en fin insats ,då det trots allt är ganska tufft att vara
dom som får avsluta hela kvällen,vi spelade ju allra sist mellan
00:00-01:00.

Måste åxo berömma Inger Nordström som gör en lysande comeback,bra musiker
hade hon och hon sjöng bättre än vad jag nånsin drömt om,jaa hon var i alla
fall den som imponerade mest på på mej under hela lördagskvällen.

Detta blev ett långt brev Jan men det är bara kul att du frågar?
det är kul att ha kontakt med dej.Nu väntar jag allt på på ditt brev i
lådan.. så hör jag av mej i veckan...ha det gott så länge.

QUESTION: My uncle used to play a tape recording of a song about “I Lost The Only Love I Knew.” He said he recorded it from the radio and that it was a Ray Price record. Nobody knows anything about such a song. Do you know?

ANSWER: “I Lost The Only Love I Knew” was the flipside of Ray’s 1952 number four hit, “Don’t Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes.”

QUESTION: I have heard that Dolly Parton is in some TV special about Fan Fair. Do you know anything about that?

ANSWER: "CMA Music Festival: Country Music's Biggest Party," will air August 2^nd on ABC-TV at 9 p.m. ET. QUESTION: My cousin used to sing a song about “Over And Over Again.” He said it was on the radio by Buck Owens back in the 60’s. Do you know anything about as song by that title?

ANSWER: “Over And Over Again” was the flipside of Buck’s 1963 number one, “Act Naturally.”

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

According to Merle Travis, his 1946 hit song, “No Vacancy,” came to mind late one night while trying to find an empty motel room.

Travis commented, “”No Vacancy” signs were everywhere back in those days. Veterans returning from World War II were having a hard time finding a place to live because everything was full. I was driving back from a show with Cliffie Stone. It was late and we drove a couple hundred miles just looking for a motel room to spend the night. And every motel we passed had a “No Vacancy” sign on the door---and that gave us the idea to write the song.”

Merle Travis’ Capitol single “No Vacancy” made the country charts in June 1946—as the flipside of “Cincinnati Lou,” which peaked at number two while “No Vacancy” made it to number three. The two were Merle’s first and second charted songs and stayed

on the charts for a total of 20 weeks.

Between 1946 and 1966, Merle Travis placed 13 song son the country music charts.

He died October 20^th, 1983 at the age of 65.

Heat and musical instruments. Since the heat wave is the news this week, I figured I'd talk about how it affects the instruments you play and love.

Many steel guitars that have the fretboards glued to the neck, which is about 98 percent of them, will suffer the indignity of the fretboard coming loose from the neck because of heat if you leave the guitar in the trunk of your car for any extended period of time. Many is the time in the summer, when I had put my Emmons or Sho-Bud in the trunk of the car, drove seventeen miles to Music Row to do a session, pulled my steel guitar out of the case and had the fretboards fall on the floor.

Now, let me ask, how do you think this heat wave would affect your steel guitar in the trunk of your dark colored car if you left it there three or four days? I'm sure there are items in your pack-a-seat or amplifier that would suffer the consequences of this dire action also. We all know what heat does to CDs, DVDs, vinyl albums and even cassette tapes. The glue that many acoustic guitars and dobros are assembled with can be greatly affected by heat. I'm not even touching on the fact that tuning may be affected for a good while by heat in the guitar long after the strings have reached room temperature.

Do you play an aluminum neck steel guitar? Just remember that wood, aluminum and steel all expand and contract at different rates and unless the guitar is staying in the same area where it will be played for at least 24 hours, you could have temperature related problems. A problem with all-pull guitars is that the rods under the guitar that pull to raise and lower, which I will refer to as tuning rods, are also greatly affected by temperature. If your pull rod has expanded when you step on you're "A" pedal, the pitch of your note will not pull up to it's designated frequency. Push-pull guitars, of course, don't have this problem because the stops are not at the end of the pull rod, but rather at the changer itself.

I worked this weekend at Wynonna Judd's Harley Motorcycle Ride-In and had to play outside in 100 degree heat. Setting the guitar up two hours before playing time on the back of the stage prevented any tuning problems at all on this fine old 70 model aluminum neck Emmons. The guitar player and bass player had problems, but then they showed up only about 20 minutes before curtain call. Luckily, there was plenty of water and Gatorade to drink. Wynonna sang fine as did Bernadette, the beautiful queen of Donegel, Ireland and the fine soft rock act that was ahead of us. However, the high temperature wilted the crowd like putty.

I know many of you in the entertainment business in the summer months are going to be exposed to severe temperatures. My advice would be to carry plenty of water and Gatorade and alternate between the two. Make sure your equipment is ready for the extremes it will have to endure. Do you have a good steel guitar cover? A light amp cover? Waterproof pick pouches and accessory protection? Be prepared and you won't be sorry. The little accessories that your wife buys you for Christmas for your equipment, may prove to be a blessing in the heat of summer. I may add that we even have some very high quality drink holders which clamp to the leg of the steel guitar.

Den 27 augusti är det Äppelbo Country Music Club som har årliga sommar fest på paviljongen i Äppelbo. För live musiken står Countryneers Ett tips för den icke bilburne. Ta tåget till Rågsvedens hpl, promenaden till entré är ca 250 meter. Glöm inte tält. På söndag morron en promenad på ca 500 meter för att borsta tänderna i Västerdalälven. Tag tåget hem senare under dagen. Den största orsaken är den att det finns inget öltält. Bara en PUB 4,5 meter från scen. En höjdare alltså

jag tänkte att jag skulle berätta lite om vad vi har på gång i höst på Dusty Records på countryfronten.
Vi kommer att släppa en CD med Pilgrim. Det är ett Göteborgsband som frontas av tvillingsystrarna Karin Forsman och Maria Forsman-Larsson. Systrarna driver också den fantastiskt trevliga krogen KoM bar på Olivedalsgatan här i Götet. Där kan man se live-musik onsdag till lördag varje vecka utan inträde. All sorts musik, en hel del country. På plattan gör de dels ett antal egna låtar men också alster av Louvin Brothers, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, A P Carter med flera. De håller sig till ett genuint countrysound men sätter sin egen prägel på arrangemangen. På vår samling Rockin At The Barn vol 4 hade de två låtar med och dessa fick positiva omdömen i tidningar som Kountry Korral, American Music Magazine, Maverick (UK), Göteborgs-Posten med flera.
Vi släpper också en CD med kanadensaren Joe Fournier, hans tredje. Joe är inte strikt country utan mer i sin stil som en blandning av Creedence, Rockpile och Merle Haggard. Utan att lägge mer ved på den diskussion om vad som är country så vill jag ändå tycka att hur envist man håller fast om att country ska låta på ett visst sätt (som det var förr) kan det ju inte vara fel att artister vill blanda genrer.
Vi kommer också att släppa en CD med Jerry Hensley. Jerry spelade i drygt åtta år med Johnny Cash både på scen och på skiva och i tjugo med Statler Brothers. På den box med June Carter-Cash som släpps i augusti finns Jerry med. Och på hans CD finns Johnny Cash, Anita Carter, Jimmy Fortune med flera namnkunniga musiker med.

Hello fellow players,
Since I have not mentioned bars in any of my tips in the past, I'd like to take the opportunity to do so at this moment. I am taken with the fact that many less experienced players seem to think there has to be a certain amount of magic in using the correct bar. Everybody's looking for the magic formula for playing steel guitar though choosing the correct bar. My opinion is as long as the bar is near the correct size, whether it's made out of chrome plated cold rolled steel or the most exotic unobtainium that can be found and machined, the audience won't know the difference, nor will the other band members and probably the player himself wouldn't if he were blindfolded.

If the bar is made of a very hard material or even an average material and chrome plated, it should suffice. Today you can find bars made of some kind of exotic stone, bakelite, glass and no telling what all. Players seem to love to argue about how great their bars are with statements like, "Boy, my rodium stainless steel and lead filled bar slides so good and gives me the best tone I ever heard." This is undoubtedly a fallacy. The biggest advantage any bar can possibly offer is the ability to slide smoothly on the strings and not slip out of your hand at an inopportune moment.

The most important thing when it comes to bars is size and weight. A bar that is too heavy will make your playing lethargic and slightly more sloppy. However, it may improve sustain. Naturally, a bar that is too light will hurt sustain because the vibrations it is supposed to reflect end up going through the bar and being absorbed by your left hand.

Now here's the most important thing and the crux of my tip this week. This is the length of the bar. The length of the bar should be determined by the size of your hand and what you can control and NOT by how many strings the guitar has that you are playing.You might say "But I have a 12 string guitar. I gotta have a bar that covers them all." Wrong. How many players, regardless of how many strings they have, ever play the first string and the last string at the same time? Remember, we're not playing rhythm steel guitar here. A 12 string player who plays his 12th string and his 1st string at the same time is a player I'd just as soon not hear. If you have a 12 string steel guitar, you still need a 7/8ths diameter bar (this has been proven to be the standard) and approximately 3 and a quarter to 3 and a half inches long. It's good to have an indentation on the back of the bar so that you can put your thumb on or it in to do precision slants and reverses.

Again let me say, the standard size bar that has been settled on by the world's greatest professional steel guitar players is the 7/8th solid bar, 3 and a quarter inches long.

The Boyett glass lead-filled bars seem to be working out very well and have a very nice unique look. I also like the quality of an industrial chrome bar that won't peel. Actually, I can play and sound about equal on any bar that I pickup, as long as the size and weight are near standard. If you get away from the standard size, length and weight bar, you are going to be forfeiting dexterity and tone, so say 90 percent of the professional players in the world and I agree.

As I am getting ready to go do a Razzy Bailey session this afternoon, I am thinking about my checklist and checking it twice because a steel player needs many little items to execute his craft. Bars, picks, chords, guitars, complete with pedals, legs and rods, amplifier, volume pedal, extension cords, and of course, extra strings in case of breakage and necessary tuning and maintenance tools and all this before we even get into any effects. Most steel players now carry echo and a remote digital reverb unit. Some players carry complete racks of effects but this trend seems to be fading out rapidly as the people who hire steel guitars seem to want to hear purity and not a steel guitar sounding like something it isn't. Anyway, I hope I have everything when I get to the job. Thank goodness for the pack-a-seat that I forgot to mention, as it seems to be the item that keeps everything else organized.
