Hej,

Nu är jag tillbaka från min och hustruns resa till Irland. En fantastisk resa som började i Dublin och fortsatte till Bray, Arklow, New Ross, Waterford, Cork, Skibbereen, Bantry, Kenmare, Dingle, Tralee, Galway och tillbaka till Dublin där vi spenderade de två sista dagarna. Irland är ett fint land att besöka men absolut inte billigt som man skulle kunna tro. De har med EU-pengar fått upp sin ekonomi ordentligt. Trots detta så åt vi en hel del fina måltider, men att hitta irländsk mat till hyfsat pris var inte lätt. Inte ens i de små fiskebyarna runt kusten kunde man hitta fisk på restaurant till vettigt pris, underligt eller hur? Fråga mig inte hur vi upplevde den irländska musiken^?! Den hörde vi endast sporadiskt per radio och TV då vi av olika skäl inte var ute på kvällarna. Precis som i Sverige har man en tendens att börja alldeles för sent på kvällen med levande musik. Sånt orkar vi gamlingar inte med!

I ditt senaste nyhetsbrev skrev Per-Uno följande: "En tidning som ligger under en förening, bolag etc, har väl i normala fall en ansvarig utgivare, som väl ofta är styrelsens ordförande som ju inför medlemmarna och externa intressenter är högste ansvarig för innehållet och ekonomin?"

Jag tänkte förklara hur det fungerar med ansvariga utgivare då många countryföreningar också har periodiska skrifter utan att känna till lagar och regler.

Ägaren till en tidning utser normalt ansvarig utgivare. Detta måste vara en fysisk person! Alla periodiska skrifter måste ha en ansvarig utgivare. Den ansvarige utgivaren har inget som helst ekonomiskt ansvar och inget som helst ansvar för skriftens innehåll; däremot har han/hon ensamansvar, vilket betyder att endast ansvarige utgivaren och aldrig den enskilde journalisten kan ställas till svars inför domstol för det som publicerats i en tidskrift. Detta regleras i grundlagen TF (och YGL för etermedia samt hemsidor).

Därför har vi också varit väldigt måna om att ingen på de tidningar vi drivit/driver tar bilder och texter från internet och publicerar; detta är ett brott mot upphovsrättslagen. Tyvärr så är det väldigt vanligt och förekommer inte minst i tidskrifter som olika föreningar håller i. Det är en stor nackdel med att utse någon ur en styrelse eller ägarkrets till ansvarig utgivare, när personen inte förstår och har kunskap om media, publikationer och de lagar och regler som reglerar detta. Därför bör man ha någon på redaktionen till denna roll; någon med insikt och kunskap - ofta chefredaktören eller redaktionschefen.

Hoppas detta mail kommer rätt, brukar kika in på ”countryvingar” ibland.

De har alltså turnerat sedan 1966 (inne på 41a året i år) och är fortfarande ett fantastiskt liveband, (i och för sig 4-5 år sedan jag såg dem men jag har läst rapporter och de är lika bra fortfarande). De har en otrolig massa låtar att spela, från bluegrass, mountain music till popinfluerad country och rock, jag kan garantera en show som ingen blir besviken på.

Så, alla som har möjlighet, ta er till Norge och upplev ett enastående band. Då får man dessutom chansen att se den bedårande Nanci Griffith på samma festival.

Hej, Janne!

Eftersom jag fick igång en steelchattsida trots att jag är närmast medvetslös på data så provar vi med en till, nämligen http://countrydalarna.forum24.se/ för KKs och DCMCs (Dalarnas Country Music Club) prenumeranter, läsare, medlemmar och countryintresserade sympatisörer i största allmänhet. Där kan vi chatta för glatta livet, och där kan du själv (och alla andra) tycka till så att servern smälter av all moteld, hehe! På med knäskydden och sätt igång bara!

Gå med som medlemmar redan från början, för det är säkert bara en tidsfråga innan alla jävla (ursäkta!) spamrobotar har hittat sidan och börjat skicka textannonser för knark, gambling, snoppförstorare och allt möjligt annat elände, och då måste vi spärra sidan för icke medlemmar.

Morgan Tegnér från Älvdalen (Emmons LeGrande S-10, Zum D-10 och Nashville 400) gjorde f ö en klart stark insats på senaste jammet i Kvarnsveden (se länken ovan och http://www.countrysweden.com/dcmc/manadsbrev.asp ) så jag hoppas att han blir haffad av första bästa steellösa countryband när som helst. Han klarar iaf av att hoppa med direkt.

Så i dag känner jag mig riktigt väl till mods trots att kåken behöver målas om!

Hej Vänner! Nu är det dags för en ny klubbkväll. Klubbkvällarna i Hillbillyns tecken brukar inte vara stillsamma tillställningar på Mosebacke, men den 12 maj ser ut att kunna bli ännu vildare än vanligt. Det blir en kväll då ungtupparna inom Hillbilly, Bluegrass respektive Zydeco sparkar loss i tre vansinniga konserter på en och samma kväll.

Rockridge Brothers, regerande svenska mästare i amerikansk old time musik, brukar få liv i de flesta som inte varit döda mer än tre dagar. "Sweet and greasy tunes played as your grandpa´ likes ém!"

G2 Bluegrass Bands medlemmar spelar alla i etablerade band i Sveriges bluegrasselit, men valde för lite mer än ett år sedan att bilda ett eget band där medelåldern inte ligger närmre pensionen. Så här låter ung, hungrig bluegrass när den är som bäst 2007, oavsett på vilken sida atlanten du är.

Evil Emil & the King Kongo Cobras är utan tvekan Sveriges bästa, ösigaste och galnaste cajun & zydecoband. Trots att de onda ormarna redan spelat på en klubbkväll vore det omöjligt att påstå sig ha en kväll med de bästa unga roots/hillbilly banden utan att ha dem med. Om du inte redan vet att du älskar Zydeco kommer du att göra det efter ikväll.

Från skivspelarna levererar Lonesome Baloo och Sivletto Per old time hillbilly, rockabilly, bluegrass, country och roots musik innan, mellan och efter banden. Det allena är värt att lämna Eurovisions TV-soffan för.

I början av oktober kommer vi att ta över Jerry Hensley som spelade
gitarr med Johnny Cash i drygt åtta år. Jerry är en varm sångare med
en djup och fin röst. Och en fantastisk gitarrist, enligt Marshall
Grant den bästa musiker som spelat med the man in black. Som extra
kuriosa är Jerry släkt med A P Carter, grundaren av Carter Family
(anses vara det första countrybandet).
För närvarande håller vi på och bokar spelningar och är det någon som

Country Music Hall of Famer Porter Wagoner will celebrate his 50th anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry on the May 19th Opry presented by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Other artists set to appear include Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless and host Marty Stuart. A one hour portion of the show will air on GAC’s Grand Ole Opry Live at 7 p.m. CT. Wagoner has had 81 charting singles including 29 Top 10 records.

R.O.P.E’s annual Spectacular Summer Show will feature artists such as Charlie Louvin, Razzy Bailey, Stonewall Jackson and Jeannie Sealy. The show will also include a “Tribute To The Great Steel Guitar Players,” featuring Don Helms, Weldon Myrick, John Hughey, Stu Basore, Ron Elliott and a special guest. The event is scheduled for June 7 at the Nashville Nightlife on Music Valley Drive. Tickets for adults are $20 and $10 for children, ages 6 to 12. Contact Leslie Elliot for details, (615) 860-9257.

Carlene Carter is scheduled to perform at the Grand Ole Opry today (4/27) for the first time in two years. Since her last visit, Carter has signed wtih Eleven Thirty Records.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of songwriters will tell you that driving or riding in a car is one of the best times and places for writing songs.

According to Hank Cochran, that was certainly the case in writing “A Little Bitty Tear.”

Hank commented, “That’s one of those songs I wrote in the car, while I was driving from home to the office and back and forth. And I took it down to Owen Bradley and he said he liked the song but he didn’t have anybody in mind to record it at the time. So I pitched it to everybody in town and nobody wanted it but I finally got it cut two or three times before Burl Ives recorded it. But that was one of those songs that just happened and I wrote it down. I just kept pitching the song until I got it cut the way I wrote it.”

Burl Ives’ Decca recording of “A Little Bitty Tear” made the country charts February 3^rd, 1962 and peaked at # two, where it stayed for two weeks.

It was his 4^th charted country song and was on the charts for 17 weeks. The single also scored a number nine on the pop music charts

Hello fellow players,
The steel player I would like to spotlight this week is Darryl Davidson. Darryl is an incredible player who spent several years in Dallas playing with the Western Swing bands and then many more in Nashville working with several famous artists. I have heard stories about many of his exploits with Johnny Cash's brother Tommy.

One of the most interesting steel guitar recordings I have ever heard in my life was Darryl's album of Spanish favored tunes. Darryl relates the story of this album to me claiming that he walked into a studio in Grand Prairie, Texas with a vague idea of doing some original tunes but not having much money to do so.

The studio owner says, "I can get you all the musicians you want for practically nothing."

Darryl asked, "When?"

The studio owner replied, "Tomorrow morning, 10 o'clock."

The next morning at the stroke of ten, Darryl was set up and suddenly through the door comes 15 to 20 Mexicans, a great big Mariachi band. After several takes on several songs, all the songs sounded like old Mexico in the twenties. Darryl absolutely played his tail off. Overall, the session was way beyond incredible.

I don't think it was ever released, but Darryl gave me a copy of it which I managed to wear out over the years. I played it for many people in Nashville. Most of them loved it very much and saw great humor in the way it was done and how it came out. I personally think it's one of the best steel albums I ever heard.

Darryl left Nashville several years ago, moved to Kansas City, played in a club there for a good while before moving to Albuquerque where he has been living and working the past several years.

In Darryl's early days he played a double 12 Howard but in the last 20 or so years, he has split the duties between Emmons push pull and Zum. Even though this man plays very good commercial country, his vast knowledge of chords, progressions and harmonies knows no bounds.

If you get to Albuquerque, New Mexico any time, look him up. He'll be playing somewhere.

I have finally joined the guitar players of the world who have clips on YouTube. I'm playing my cherished triple 10 string, 8 pedal Bigsby. The clips I have on there at the moment are thumbstyle because I wanted to demonstrate to standard players the correct way to do it. Give it a listen and hopefully a 5 star rating because it's not as easy as it looks.

Den senaste tiden har jag fått några CDs i min brevlåda och här lite kommentarer angående dessa. Hayden Thompson som besökt oss tidigare i Sverige minns jag för hans ord ”det finns bara en sak att göra och det är att gå och supa sig full”. Bakgrunden var att hans promotor här i Sverige hade fixat ett band till honom som inte ens kunde spela de enklaste countrylåtar. Så det var efter den första repetitionen som hans uttalande kom. Nåväl, plattan han gjort (Bluelight Records BLR 33132) i Finland är en blandning av country och rockabilly och den håller väl inte amerikansk kvalitet. Men jag gillar Hayden som sångare trots ibland lite tråkiga låtar. Jag gillar också layout på insticksblad, snyggt jobbat! Här lite övriga nyheter. Janne Lindgren

The Southern Grass

Dan Paisley och Michael Paisley har varit i Sverige tidigare med sin far Bob Paisley, som gick bort 2004 efter en längre tids sjukdom. Dan och Michael har med sig bröderna TJ Lundby och Bob Lundby på fiddle respektive banjo och Don Eldreth Jr på mandolin. TJ's och Bob's far Ted Lundby spelade med Bob Paisley i den första upplagan av Southern Grass under tidigt 70-tal. Don Eldreth Sr spelade banjo i många år med bl.a. Del McCoury. Det borgar för ett toppband! Passa på att uppleva ett bluegrassband från USA live!!!!

Som förband har vi glädjen att få se och höra ett av Sveriges bästa bluegrassband - Downhill Bluegrass Band.

Downhill med medlemmar från trakterna kring Avesta har givit ut flera skivor och turnerat i både Europa och USA och tillhör Sveriges absoluta elit inom bluegrassmusiken. Inne på sitt nionde år och med senast släppta plattan That one straight line visar Downhill tydligare än någonsin att den inhemska bluegrassen kan hålla högsta internationella klass.

När jag skrev om ansvarige utgivarens roll i ditt senaste nyhetsbrev så uttryckte
jag mig så att följande meningen kan missuppfattas: "Den ansvarige utgivaren
har inget som helst ekonomiskt ansvar och inget som helst ansvar för skriftens innehåll ..."

Vad jag menar är att ansvarige utgivaren inte nödvändigtvis är den som bestämmer
vad som ska skrivas om och hur det skrivs etc, men ändå är den som har det juridiska ansvaret för att det som skrivs är korrekt och inte bryter mot några lagar.

Sommaren närmar sig och med det alla festivaler och andra speltillfällen som brukar dyka upp.

Hur går det för er? Ni glömmer väl inte att skicka in när ni får nya speldagar, (eller avbokade), så vi kan hålla ett uppdaterat och fullspäckat kalendarium hela tiden. En del av er är duktiga på att skicka in information, men en del av er hör jag inget alls ifrån?? Det är idag 37 band/artister på sidan och det tar mycket tid att hålla koll på alla sidor för att söka uppdateringar och nyheter.

Det finns även en sida där ni kan lägga in er nya skiva om en sådan finns, och även en mindre webshop.

Sedan ska ni inte vara rädda att uppdatera er presentation. Skicka in nya låtar, bilder, bandet kanske inte ser lika ut nu, kontaktuppgifter mm.. Jag finns här, och sidan www.svenskacountryartister.com är till för er.. Det är ert engagemang lika mycket som mitt, som kan skapa och utveckla sidan till något bra.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

In 1959, a song that was to have been the swan song for three folks who thought they had decided to quit show business, instead made the threesome a household name in the business of music and became the most played record of its day.

Jim Ed, Maxine, and Bonnie Brown recorded “The Three Bells” on June 3^rd, 1959 and it was released on RCA Victor on July 3^rd. The success of the record certainly did not hinge on it’s initial reviews, as Cashbox Magazine only gave it a “B-plus,” Billboard rated it’s sales potential as only three star and Music Reporter even picked the flip side of the record, “Heaven Fell Last Night” as the hit side. So much for record reviews!

“The Three Bells” entered the country charts August 3^rd, 1959, made it to number one, and stuck there for ten weeks. It also scored a number one on the pop charts and stayed there for four weeks. The single also scored a # ten on the rhythm and blues charts

According to Glenn Sutton, songwriters are notorious for putting things off to the last minute and Jerry Lee Lewis’ “What’s Made Milwaukee Famous” was a good example!

He commented, “Jerry Kennedy was recording Jerry Lee Lewis and Jerry asked me if I had any songs for Jerry Lee. I told him I had a song for Jerry Lee but I really didn’t have one! And they started calling me every day wanting to know where my Jerry Lee Lewis song was and I kept putting it off. And I was mixing some tracks in Studio A and Charlie Bradley was running the machines that day and while he was getting some equipment turned on, the telephone rang and Charlie told me it was my publisher. I took the phone and he was asking where my Jerry Lee Lewis song was and did I have it written down? Although I didn’t have, I told him I did! So he asked me the title and I didn’t even have a song much less a title . And Charlie Bradley had dropped part of a newspaper on the floor and I happened to be standing on it. I look down and there was a full page ad with a beer can on it that said “Milwaukee’s Best—It’s Made Milwaukee Famous.”

So I just told my publisher that the title of the song was “What’s Made Milwaukee Famous.” And he thought it was a great title and I hadn’t even written the song. So I went home and stayed up all night writing that song for Jerry Lee Lewis to record the next day.”

“What’s Made Milwaukee Famous” entered the country music charts June 8^th, 1968 and peaked at # 2 where it stuck for two weeks.

It was Jerry Lee’s 11^th charted country song and was on the charts for 16 weeks. The Smash Records single also scored inside the pop music top 100.

Hello fellow players,

Walking into my store this morning and seeing five trade-ins that we got this week from different people, I was appalled to see how the strings had been installed on all these guitars. You may say to yourself, "Just take them off and put some on right!"

But unfortunately, there is more to it than that. The way these strings were installed has damaged these guitars. One of them to the tune of several hundred dollars.

A four month old Mullen that should only have some fingerprints on it, had the inside of the keyhead scratched so badly that the mica was almost eaten through to the wood. Sure, the rest of the guitar looked great, but because strings were put on the guitar through the tuning key hole in the post and not cut off flush with the other side, the excess string dug deeply into the keyhead floor and did damage that only replacing the mica will fix. This is about a $500 job.

Sometimes I think, why should we fix it when the next buyer may end up doing the same thing. All a steel guitar owner has to do is cut off all the extra string that protrudes after the string is put through the peg hole. And please remember also, that extra floppy bit of string that you don't cut off, is totally unnecessary, useless, not helping to keep your guitar in tune and can do nothing but damage to your guitar as you spin the tuning key to bring the string up to pitch.

This is the helpful hint of the week and I hope you use it the rest of your life. Of course, carefully clean your rollers when you change strings. Make sure they spin freely and have a drop of oil between each one of them to keep them from buzzing back and forth in the slot on the shaft.

With this newsletter going out to thousands of people, I say things at times that are controversial to some people and a few others get down right mad. But thank goodness 99% seem to appreciate what I say and if they don't, they good heartedly, in a very friendly way, email me and say things like, "Nah, I don't agree with 100% of what you say, but I respect your right to say it. I'll buy your lunch next time I'm in town."

Then there are those who just get violently mad and say things like, "You're cruel, ignorant and mean. You have no sense of humor and get me off your stupid mailing list."

Naturally, I really don't want these people on my mailing list and usually laugh and go on. Seldom do I argue with them and seldom does this really ever happen, but with over 30,000 people reading this, I guess I can expect one or two every couple of months.

Controversy? Yes, I do say things at times to be controversial, but not to hurt anybody or make anybody mad, but just to make everybody think and to remember there are two sides to about every issue. Some things that I have said that have caused controversy are my joking reference to home made guitars and people being respected and praised after they die, when they were not respected and pretty well hated before they died as if death cleansed all sins. As most of us know, the death of notorious individuals does not make them wonderful after they die. Hitler, Dillinger, Attila the Hun and Mussolini are some examples.

I'm sure I have made reference to things that have possibly offended others, but I am here to make you think and be a source of some inside knowledge, help with technical questions and let you know what's going on in Nashville and on the steel guitar scene first hand. I'm sure I'll say some controversial things that will offend some of you in the future and in a way, I hope I do because if I don't, this will be pretty dull reading and I won't be doing my job.

My reason for putting so many fingerpicking thumbstyle videos up is that I'm trying to bridge the gap between steel guitar and lead guitar. I am getting hundreds of emails from lead guitar - standard guitar players who are suddenly extremely interested in steel guitar because of this. They didn't realize steel could be played in a style they thought was only their own, which makes me think of something funny. How many lead guitar players have you heard try to imitate steel guitar? I know the answer to that one too. Too many!

No matter how hard a lead player tries, he cannot sound like a steel guitar unless he's wearing a slide bar on his left hand pinky and he primarily sounds like just a bad slide guitar which is what he wants, but he still isn't a steel guitar.

I feel that any good lead guitar player who can play fingerstyle lead guitar could be playing that style on steel guitar in a short length of time. What do you think?

Nu återstår bara mixningen av Hillfillies inspelningar som vi jobbat med de senaste månaderna. Det känns redan nu som om det kommer att bli en kanonplatta. Mitt nästa projekt är att göra Carolina Åkerlinds nya platta klar och vi jobbade faktiskt med den lite igår! Men utgivningen kommer ändå inte att ske förrän till hösten.

Tack Staffan Stridsberg för CDkopian jag fick för en tid sedan. Har inte hunnit lyssna förrän nu, men blir glatt överraskad av det fina soundet. Kanske lite för mycket uppmixade trummor men ni kallar ju er musik för folkrock så det är okej. Sången är utmärkt och de instrumentala insatserna är lysande. Steelspelet gillar jag speciellt! Tyvärr var låt nummer två defekt så den kunde jag inte avlyssna. Väntar med spänning på en ”riktig” CD.

Hello fellow players,

Sunday was such a beautiful day in the Nashville area after a week of horrible wind, tornadoes and rain induced minor flooding. I decided to get out and look around at the local area in my little yellow, high wing Piper. After checking the flood damage in the midstate, I decided that I'd try to bring myself to fly over the Johnny Cash house and possibly get a picture with my new digital camera.

I circled where the house had been a couple times and remembered how beautiful this country castle was. I managed to pull the camera out, adjust it and fly the airplane with one hand and take pictures with the other.

After landing, I had a hard time smiling for the next picture.

This past weekend I worked a very exciting steel guitar show in Fulton, MS. just east of Tupelo, at the Tom Bigbee Jamboree. It was one of the most exciting, happy steel guitar shows I had ever been to. Only Herbie Wallace seemed to be sane. Such great players were there as Wayne Bridge, Doc Rickles, Jackie "The Hammer" Johnson, Sonny Boone, Jay French, Danny Lyles, Mike Brown, Thomas Kelly, Glen Smith and many other great players.

Let's spotlight Wayne Bridge this week. I met Wayne when he was working at the Sho-Bud steel guitar factory in Nashville forty years ago. I was working the road out of Nashville, but when in town, I would hang around Sho-Bud manufacturing and aggrevate the workers. One day Wayne looked at me and said, "Why don't you come out and hear me play tonight?"

I said "Sure." I got the location of the club and about 9 PM I walked in and to my surprise, I was treated with the sounds of a really fine, modern, southern rock band. Wayne was playing excellent standard guitar.

I went up to the stage and said, "Wayne, you sound great. What kind of amplifier are you playing through?"

Very sheepishly he replied, "It's a new amp company. It's called a Peavey." I remember laughing and telling him that no amplifier company with the name of Peavey would ever amount to anything. What a silly name for a guitar amplifier!

Two years later, I got my first Peavey amplifier and not only have I been playing them ever since, but have sold thousands through my store over the past several years. I guess Hartley Peavey is the one laughing now.

Wayne went on to become a great steel guitarist in Nashville and attained most of his fame and notoriety working with Vern Gosdin. Naturally, Wayne has always played Sho-Bud guitars.

Many things in the human life are things that we can do without and still exist. Things like your new motorcycle or your new, expensive car or SUV. Things like movies, television sets and even music. Think about it. How would you like to be in one of those war torn countries that we see on the news every night and not be able to have your hobbies and the things that you indulge in that bring so much joy to your life? What if there was no music? No guitars, pianos, drums, etc. and all you did was try to survive from one hour to the next?

We are a lucky nation having a lucky life, but many of us have died for the priviledges that we have. Our emotions have to fed to have a high quality life. Movies and television and music. How about fishing? Most of us don't need to eat the fish we catch to keep from starving, but getting out on the lake and sitting there in your own boat in total serenity can do something for your soul that it needs desperately.

Steel guitar has always been my personal island in the middle of a hard working busy life. When I was on C130's in the Air Force, working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, I think music was the only thing that kept me sane. Making it myself and creating music with others in my squadron and listening to recorded music of others. Things really haven't changed today for myself and I'm sure most of you out there reading this have a close emotional tie with music.

The brands of instruments and equipment we use are but a small part of our overall love for this indulgence. It's the music itself that counts. This is why I encourage you to encourage others, especially your young, to appreciate and get involved in music. If you light the fuse to music for a youngster, it could give them great purpose and pleasure for their entire lifetime. Remember, if you live in the USA or one of the great free countries on this planet, you are very lucky. Take advantage of it and enjoy it. Count your blessings. We only have one life to live. Make it joyful with music.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of classic country hits were written as follow-up’s to another song and according to Glenn Sutton, Jerry Lee Lewis’s 1968 hit, “She Still Comes Around To Love What’s left Of Me” was just such a tune!

Glenn commented, “I wrote that song because Jerry Kennedy told me I had to write a follow-up to “Milwaukee” and that’s what I came up with. It was time for the next session on Jerry Lee and Kennedy kept telling me he needed a good song for the follow-up so on the way home that night I started thinking about it and I don’t know why but the line, “She Still Comes Around” came to my mind and I started fooling with it and added the “To Love What’s Left Of Me” to it and I wrote the song that night.”

“She Still Comes Around To Love What’s Left Of Me” made the country music charts September 28^th, 1968 and peaked at # two, where it stayed for two weeks.

It was Jerry Lee’s 12^th charted country song and was on the charts for 12 weeks.

Europas bästa bluegrassband

I helgen korades Europas bästa bluegrassband på EWOB-festivalen (European World of Bluegrass) i Holland. Vinnande av det fyrtiotal tävlande banden blev G2 Bluegrass Band.

Bandet som funnits i 1,5 år består av fem unga grabbar från spridda delar av Mellansverige. Det är första gången någonsin ett band från Skandinavien vinner, så segern är historisk. När konfrencieren Fred Bartenstein skulle annonsera vinnarna, som utses av övriga deltagande band, konstaterade han att "it was not even close" det vill säga det var en klar och övertygande seger.

-Det känns helt fantastiskt att få ta emot det här priset, säger Christoffer Olsson, gitarrist och sångare som också skriver de flesta av bandets låtar. Nu blir det Nashville nästa!

Vinsten innebär att G2 får representera Europa på den amerikanska bluegrassfestivalen IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) i Nashville, Tennessee 2008. Men redan till hösten åker bandet över för att spela och knyta kontakter. I slutet av sommaren kommer också första fullängdsskivan ut.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Now and then you’ll hear a songwriter say they have not idea where a certain song came from....it just happened. According to Bill Anderson, “Must You Throw Dirt In My Face” was one of those tunes!

Bill commented, “That’s another one of those songs that I really don’t know where it came from. But it’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve ever written. The Louvin Brothers almost didn’t record that song. I really wasn’t all that sold on the song. I really think that if I hadn’t gone to the recording session that day, I’m not sure that song would have ever been recorded. Charlie really wanted to record it but Ira didn’t want to do it and Ira started trying to rewrite the song and Charlie kind of put his foot down. I just kind of stood there. But I really think had I not been there that day, it never would have happened. I think maybe they were a little embarrassed not to record it because I had stayed there all day and it was the last song on the session. So they did it.”

The Louvin Brothers’ Capitol single “Must You Throw Dirt In My Face” made the country charts November 17^th, 1962 and peaked at # 21. It was Ira and Charlie’s last charted song as a duet and was on the charts for 6 weeks.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of songs have come out of Tootsie’s—the famous watering hole on Broadway in Nashville, Tennessee and according to Hank Cochran, “A-11” was one of those songs.

Hank said: “A friend of mine from California was in town and we were down at Tootsie’s…a-talkin’ and drinkin’ a little bit. And he asked me if I had anything on that jukebox over there. And I told him I did and just punch A-11 and that it was a new song I’d just had cut and I don’t even remember what the song was now. Whatever it was....it was a song I didn’t want to hear right then and I started thinking, “Please don’t play A-11.” So I told the guy I was with that I had to go to the house for awhile and I’d be back in a little bit. So I was writing “A-11” as I went out the door. So I went home, wrote the song, brought it back to him and he recorded it in California. And then Buck Owens cut it for an album and it got so much airplay, Johnny Paycheck asked me if he could record it for a single. And of course I told him that he certainly could. And he had the first hit on the song and since then, everybody has recorded that song.”

Johnny Paycheck’s Hilltop records single of “A-11” made the charts October 16th, 1965 and peaked at # 26. it was his first charted song and was on the charts for 12 weeks.

Buck’s Owens’ version of “A’11” entered the charts January 1^st, 1989 and made it to number 54. it was his 87^th charted song and was on the charts for 6 weeks.

Angående följande fråga i föregående nyhetsbrev:

Kan någon tala om för mig varför Jimmy Ibbotsn saknas i NGDB, vid festivalen i Vinstra ?

Jimmy ”Ibby” Ibbotson har tyvärr slutat i NGDB, uppenbarligen var han extremt trött på turnerandet. Han slutade 2004, men man kan ju alltid hoppas att han kommer tillbaka igen. Det har han gjort förut då han också sagt att han ska ”pensionera” sig men sedan ångrat sig efter något år. Han har ägnat sig litet åt soloverksamhet, hade en hemsida på http://www.jimmyibbotson.net/ där man kunde beställa hans egna CD men den verkar funka si och så.

Jag har personligen inte sett NGDB utan Ibby men rapporterna säger att bandet funkar helt OK utan honom, så klart lär han saknas i nummer som ”Dance little Jean”, ”Ripplin waters” o.dyl men enligt uppgifterna så ersätter Jeff Hanna honom på ett fullgott sätt i dessa nummer. Det saknas ju inte sångare i bandet förutom Hanna så kan ju både Jimmie Fadden och Bob Carpenter sjunga lead, vilket de också gör.

Charlie Louvin, former member of duo The Louvin Brothers with his late brother Ira, is set to celebrate his 80th birthday with several special events in Nashville July 6-8 and release a digital-only EP on July 3. Events scheduled in Nashville include a performance at Mercy Lounge, 8 p.m. on July 6; a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, of which he has been a member since 1955; and a Midnight Jamboree performance at the Texas Troubador Theater and signing at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop.

(Columbus, NC) Special Consensus' Greg Cahill has announced the addition of gifted mandolin player, Ashby Frank to the band. Frank will first appear with the group at Bill Monroe's Music Park in Bean Blossom, IN on June 13^th after mandolin player Ron Spears departs to join Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.

Cahill feels that Ashby, who has previously played with Marty Raybon and Alecia Nugent, will be an excellent addition to the band."He is a great lead and baritone singer and an unbelievable mandolin player.We have rehearsed already and the trios sound fantastic with the young voices. To be honest, I think we will be very strong and not lose a beat because Ashby is such an excellent mandolin player in addition to being a good singer."

Special Consensus released, The Trail Of Aching Hearts on May 15^th, which has already received Bluegrass Unlimited's featured review in the June issue.

Here's my report from my new Nashville, TN spring fever tripTuesday - 070522 - B.A. - Better attitude this time...

Left home around 5.00 to get the SL-bus to take me to Vallgatan to

catch "Arlandabussarna". The bus came all right so I managed to

be at the British Airways check-in desk at about 5.58... Smooth this

time I asked for a seat way up in the plane and got a seat on row #9,

which it good gettin' off the plane early. Smooth ride to London, Heathrow,

you even get some free food and drinks on BA, nice gesture... At London,

still security beyond control... you have to go through once again, and take

a free bus to Terminal 3, this time smooth and the gate was close #16.

So I was on my way ok. Plane was far from full over the Atlantic ocean...

Arrived on time in Chicago... however here the next flight was delayed about

1 hour, so I arrive in Nashville 18.41, together with the luggage which is

fine, it wasn't damaged this time. Temperature about +86 F warm & sunny.

Dan came in his nice car and drove me easily to the Midway Motel. Was nice

to meet Bob and the family again, same procedure and same room.

I rode with Dan to HG Hills food store and bought some fresh items like

Coke, Spring Water, bananas, chocolate chip cookies etc... activated my

MTA bus pass and took a bus back to the motel... had some coffee and cake

and checked up the NHL, Detroit lost for the last time this season, nice goalie

in Ducks team... hope they win over Alfie's Senators... Listened to WSM

and Eddie Stubbs was playing the oldies and I won a ticket to "An Intimate evening

with Eddie and Joe Nichols, in about a week from now... at Hall of Fame and

broadcast live over WSM 650 radio. About 21.20 I received a all from my promotion

man and he wanted to come over with some new stuff for me to check out...

I said yes and he arrived around 22.00 with a heavy box full with cds and promos,

I browsed thru all and we closed a deal, he was leaving so happy. Drifted off to

sleep late that first night...nesday –

I started the day with a new meeting about 10.00 with my promo man, still had some new

goods; checked out Great Escape, and Cd Warehouse and some more record dealers,

Not so much new in stock this time. Found some stuff for a few friends... Met with Jeff and

he had to try real hard to find me something, Mike was visiting with his now almost dying

mother... got back to the motel midday to watch the Champions League final Liverpool-

Milan, can't understand why they didn't start with Crouch at beginning of 2nd half... I

enjoyed seeing it live here though. Then it was time for my first Arby's meal... still

5 items for $6,50 with tax... you can't beat that... then a short walk to Exit/In to watch

the Benefit For The Buck Jones Memorial Fund .

I got there after The Big Happy had performed, which I was happy about, since I

didn't miss a thing... you can finf info about them at www.westernbeat.com .

Then it was time for Jason Meadows - http://jasonmeadows.musiccitynetworks.com/

he did some songs from his new "100% Cowboy" album, which will be released July 10.

He was a once runner-up Nashville Star contestant... nice steel by Mike Daly and some

nice fiddle, but the sound tended to be rockish... I noticed that they had rebuilt the inside,

so now you can go upstairs inside... nice indeed, better airconditioning too... then it was time

for singer/writer Davis Raines & Night Train - guitars and drums... I didn't enjoy...

after the break a little bit of NASHVILLE STAR contestants again - acoustic set in the round.

Lance Miller www.lancemiller.com did the strongest set with "The Beach", "You Picked Hell Of A

Time To Go Crazy" and "I'll Always Get lucky With You" also recorded by Buck Jones on his "Lucky

Star" album. Chris Young, http://www.chrisyoungcountry.com now on RCA did some songs from

his album and "Don't Waste Your Time". David St. Romain, http://www.davidstromain.com, did

three songs too. Nice to see them together... competing again... then it was time for

Jubal Lee Young, http://www.juballeeyoung.com, he has a new cd on his website, the lead

guitarrist prod. the album. He sounded guitars and drums. Then came Jon Byrd,

http://www.jonbyrd.com/ and his laid back style. He was in the same car as Buck,

way down in Texas when Buck got killed... so tragic... nice job this evening... Buck's

pa thanked him for friendship. Then top of the bill Jim Lauderdale,

http://www.jimlauderdale.com/ with Daly on steel and Tim Lorsch on fiddle... did songs from latest

country album, and a wonderful rendition of Buck's hit "You Only Call Me When You're Drunk" that

he sang harmony... then the show ended with Walt Wilkins from Texas,

http://www.waltwilkins.com ... and I left the building... too bus #3 and later the 23.15 bus #15 back home to my Midway Motel.

A wonderful day in Nashville and a very good start of my spring fever...

Thursday - 070524 - Stubbs with Bush & Lyon

Another wonderful day in Nashville, started out with a meeting with my

promo man and got some good ones... walked the streets and enjoyed

life... checked out Ernest Tubb record shop and said hello to the manager.

Still warmer than in Sweden +30 C... Spent the Evening listening to Eddie

Stubbs on WSM where he had Johnny Bush & Johnny Lyon as guests.

very long interview, it lasted for hours, spinning top notch Bush songs

all thru the evening... A real thrill

Friday - 070525 - Junior Brown at Frist

Started with a visit to Great Escape, celebrating 30 years of service...

even hotter this day... still very sunny took a busride out to a Walgreen's

store and found me a memory card 2 gb for $29,90 - a weekly special.

Later on in the evening I had learned about the Frist Fridays Kickoff.\ with

Junior Brown. This is Frist Center For Visual Arts cost only $ 8,50 and then

you could have some chips with guacamole and blue cheese dip and

carrots sliced in sticks and celery, cucumber etc... Brown was described

as bluesy Tex-Max boogie and unmatched musicianship. Coincidentally

he's also featured inside the Frist - his portrait is included in the exhibition

"Jim McGuire: The nashville Portraits" which we were all able to view at this party

in the Turner Courtyard. he had just a very laid back bassman and a fellow

playing on drum with brushes.... Junior himself played his special instrument,

a leadguitar with a steelguitar added ,on a special stand. Very nice steel instrumentals

and he did all his old hits with certain special licks... he played for about 80 minutes

and the people were dancing and partyin' I met my old friend Rob there and we though

it was just the right place to be in the middle of Nashville on a firday night...

Left the show just in time to catch the 21.15 - bus #15 to get back to my Midway Motel.

Spent evening listening to some new records, Clay Walker & Blake Shelton...

Drifted off to sleep around 24.00... to be continued...

Hello fans and fellow players,

An interesting question was brought up this week by George Buller in his comment to last week's newsletter. George's question was:

You mentioned Gene O'Neal in your newsletter and that he was the steel player with Charlie Pride's 'Pridesmen'. Can you tell me please, why do artists like Charlie Pride - and indeed many, many others - use steelies like Lloyd Green and other 'session' musicians when their own players are often as good (and have to replicate that studio 'sound' out on the road anyway?).

I approached one of Nashville's finest producers to answer this question. Before getting into this, let me remind you that it is the producer of the session whose responsibility it is to create a salable recording product for the label. He is responsible for the songs, the musicians, the arrangement and even possibly a style that the singer sings.

The producer who is answering the question posed is the great and famous Ray Baker, producer of such artists as Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Moe Bandy, Joe Stampley, George Strait, Connie Smith, Big Al Downing and many more.

Here is Ray's answer to this question.

As a former music producer of Charley Pride, ("Have I Got Some Blues For You" which was No. 1) I can answer the question this way.

Recording costs in the studio are very expensive. One of course wants to make the best record possible regardless of expense but at the same time you do want to be cost efficient. My reason for hiring a regular session player like Lloyd Greene, or perhaps Weldon Myrick who I used on several sessions was:

a) I was used to working with them and they with me, and we could communicate as to what we wanted musically based on experience with each other.

b) Using a musician that was not used to the studio environment and working with their fellow studio musicians could possibly use up costly time in accomplishing something that you wouldn't want to chance spending that extra time on.

This in no way means that some of the road band musicians are not excellent in their own right, it's just what a producer gets used to doing in the studio to bring about the end result of what he's looking for. A hit record in the most cost friendly and creative approach. After all, the artist is not the only one looking after his reputation for success in the studio. The Producer has his career at stake too and he's going to do what is right for him and the artist. The Producer has been entrusted with deciding how to spend a lot of money that the record company has provided in the way of a budget and he has to respect his responsibilities to be wise with it.

That's the best way I could answer the question. Hope it's satisfactory.

Let me add my take on it. Having owned two studios on music row and producing many artists myself, along with being a studio musician for many years, I can see both sides of this coin very clearly.

I have produced artists who insisted on using their steel player, regardless of whether they were good, bad or otherwise. Some of these have done a fair job, most didn't. But on the other side of the coin, in the middle of my studio career, myself and several other studio musicians were hired to back up Tanya Tucker on a California tour once. Tanya wanted the exact sound she had on her records so she hired all of us studio players.

Yes, it was sort of a fiasco and she wasn't happy when it was over. Being studio musicians, we sat in our chairs, read our charts on the music stand and between songs, shuffled from one chart to the next, never looking at the audience, or caring. We worked exactly like we worked in the studio, which was not very entertaining. Our last show was in Concord, California and on the plane back to Nashville, I heard Tanya tell her father, "They sounded fine, but I'm never gonna use studio musicians on the road again."

Her father looked back at her and said, "And you'd better not use road musicians in the studio either."

She laughed and I saw them shake hands.

There are musicians who specialize in different facets of performing, from the violinist in the symphony orchestra to showmen like Roy Clark. One is not better than the other one musically. They are just doing a different musical job. The church organist who is reading her parts every Sunday morning is doing a different job than Buddy Emmons would playing on Prairie Home Companion. Different musicians just do different jobs better and very few can do it all well.

In response to last weeks newsletter about my speed trap encounter, Russ Rainwater sent this email:

Your tips of 5/17 brought back memories of when I was with the Kentucky State Police. I had just got back from the speed trap school in Ludowici, Ga. when we set up on the freeway and my partner said "hoo boy, here comes a corvette, gitim". When I pulled the vette over, I saw that the driver was dressed in black and claimed to be a priest from Hendersonville, Tn., and was delivering the car to a parishoner who had had bad luck. As he told me this, I glanced in the car and saw what appeared to be steel guitar case, and promptly voided the ticket, not because I believed his story, but because I believed that he was really a steel guitar player and would beat the rap due to mental incompetence. Ni som lyssnar på mitt program på Radio Lidingö 97.8 varje vecka kunde konstatera att det blev en repris på förra veckans program. Detta på grund av tidsbrist! Men nytt program kommer till nästa vecka och då är Kenneth Friberg tillbaka med 45 minuters bluegrass. I det här brevet är Hans Rosén tillbaka med sin personliga dagbok från Nashville. Här får ni lära er mycket om staden och att man inte nödvändigtvis måste fastna på Broadway, vilket tycks vara vanligt för turister från Sverige. De bästa akterna finns oftast på andra ställen i Nashville.

För att förtydliga det som stod i vårt förra utskick:
Vi har koncentrerat countrybandet till söndagen den 3/6. Då spelar de
eminenta bluegrassbanden Rockridge Brothers och Baskery. Country i DJ-
båset blir det hela helgen och uppträdanden från The BIg Ass BBQ.
Festivalen är på Fittja Äng T-bana Fittja och följ skyltarna.

here's my report from my new Nashville, TN spring fever trip Saturday - 070526 –

Goosebumps all over your body...

Started Off with a short meeting with my promo man.. then went in line for

Hall of Fame concert/interview with Johnny Bush & Buddy Emmons.

Stood in line 1st and got the best seat available, saved one for my dear

friend Dan. We enjoyed it immensely.... goosebumps all over. Johnny

was kind enought to sign his new book "Whiskey River (Take My Mind)"

and I was so happy... I shook his hand and thanked him so much for

keeping country music alive with the Texas Shuffles... After this nice

show I spent some time at Ernest Tubb recordshop at Music Valley

and had me a couple of happy meals at McDonald's. At 24.00 it

was time for Midnite Jam at Texas Troubadour Theatre. Same gang

Johnny Bush & Buddy Emmons, and lots of steelies in the audience...

they do appreciate Emmons a lot... had luck and got a ride back home

to my Midway Motel with an ex-singer with Br-549, he was on their first

5 albums... slept hard... and was totally stoned on country shuffles...

allthe big songs "Eye For An Eye", "Green Snakes" and all his songs

about guilt...

here's my report from my new Nashville, TN spring fever trip Sunday - 070527 –

Carco Clave - nice player with good wife

I must start with a comment that Bush looked great as did his wife Lynda,

also miss Peggy was doing ok... I forgot to mention that Johnny Lyon was

a guest and he did two nice songs, Bush did the Willie-vocal... funny...

last Friday Herbie Hancock was at the Ryman, nuff said... Sunday was

same warmth as the last days... I took it slow listened to countdown and

realised there were few shuffles on the list if any.... depressing... I went

to Hall of Fame again and checked out Carco Clave - nice player with good wife

on fiddle... he has played steel in Furuvik, Sweden with BR-549... his wife was

a fiddle virtuoso... could play everything and had an absolute ear, I asked for

cajun fiddle and got me a nice "Jolie Blon", which she really was... After this

show I went to Ford Theatre to see Johnny Cash TV Show #55, with had him

and all his people, but also Ray Price from worst period ("For the Good Times")

but I also saw Conway Twitty with "Hello Darlin' '"... a mediocre girl singer Linda Hart,

and some songs with Cash & June Carter and duets... nice rarity then I spent

some time at fleamarket again, and met up with Jeff to see if some good ones

had come in.... very little, some of the used to be major acts are now on small

independent labels and promos are not so easy to find... Then slowly back to my

motel to read the Johnny Bush book about Texas honky tonkin' , by the way he had

his old bus with him up here... he's a highway man too...

Monday - 070528 - Memorial Day - Bush on live TV

Memorial Day is a holiday over here, so buses run with holiday schedules... i e

about once/hour... not so much fun, but weather still charming + 95 F ... and

I took a ride to Madison, where I found out that Johnny Russell's record collection

had been disposed of... bought some nice hard core vinyl there... stopped by at

Dollar General and a local Goodwill store and spent some time there... good

air conditioning in USA. Back home for some nice banana cake and to relive

nice hardcore vocal with bluegrass backing...

Van Howard - no label # 37333 - "Country Classics Remembered" - 2005 nice backing

Emmons-steel; Pete Wade-lead; Hank Singer-fiddle... McKinney, TEXAS-country... he was

a nice harmony singer in 1953... and up through the years... underrated...

George Ducas - Twang Thang - April 12, 2007 - CD-R - 12 songs - probably some demo..

Calhoun Twins - READY - a collection of songs 7 by C.T. others appearing are: Jake Murphy,

Johnny Selph, Jim Wheeler, Curtis Andrews, Chubby Wise & Tommy Cordell. Calhouns used

to be on STOP records and recorded hard core country in the early 70's... nice find

Still hot here today, Tuesday, spent the morning at the library checking things out on the internet...

here's my report from my Nashville, TN spring fever trip Tuesday - 070529

Wildhorse Saloon - Rodney Atkins = 6 contestants

Hot here... yesterday I had my lunch at Arby's after the stint at the library

fixing the emails etc... Good to see the Mighty Ducks win over Senators the

first Stanley Cup round.. 3-2, just about 3 minutes left of game...

Took a ride on Nolensville Road and stopped at some warehouses... find some

HD t-shirts for my grandkid... nice he' ll love them "Eat My Dust"....

Then I visited the old Lawrence brothers shop and found out about this

ABC TV taping at the Wildhorse Saloon. Featuring Rodney Atkins.... and

a contest with 6 local yokals from USA... they were invited to Nashville and

winner will be awarded to sing with Martina McBride... They all had been

linked to a Nashville songwriter helping them write a song and do one big

hit... Mike Daly played steel.. the most interesting writers were: Paul

Jefferson, Roxie Dean, Tony Hazeldon, Victoria Shaw and Leslie Satcher.

The people in the audience had to vote for the winner that will be announced

when they air the program in July 2007. I voted for the Texas girl singer,

she sang the Gretchen Wilson hit song about cheating... written by Roxie...

nice steel... the others were ups and downs Leslies protege was a copy of

a young Sara Evans belting out a Martina song "When God Fearin' Women Get

The Blues"... however no steel just guitars, and Leslie...

Rodney Atkins closed the show with some hit songs - "If You're Goin' Thru Hell"

which had a fiddle but no steel in his set. Sounded more like Southern Rock

from the 70's drums and bass mixed right up in your face... too boring I left

before the show was over... I noticed that all contestants and their families

stayed at the Hilton downtown Nashville.. ABC had lots to spend it seems..

Spent the evening listening to Tuesday Opry and giving some attention to

Stubbs on WSM Radio still promoting the Intimate Evening with Joe Nichols

tonight...

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Several hit songs have been written from lines or thoughts from old jokes and according to Bill Anderson, Charlie Louvin’s 1964 hit, “I Don’t love You Anymore,” was just such a tune!

Bill commented, “That song came from the punch line of the old joke about “he doesn’t drink anymore because he doesn’t drink any less.” I was on tour with Ray Price up in Canada and we were just standing on the side of the stage one afternoon and Ray used to pull that liner on one of his band member. “We’re really proud of him—he doesn’t drink any more---and all the people would applaud, and then he’d say, of course he doesn’t drink any less.” And I kind of have this “songwriter’s antenna” and I’m always thinking of things in terms of a song and I went back to the hotel that night and wrote “I Don’t Love You Anymore,” based strictly on that joke.”

Charlie Louvin’s Capitol Records single, “I Don’t Love You Anymore” entered the country music charts June 20^th, 1964 and peaked at # 4. it was his first charted song as a single act and was on the charts for 27 weeks.
